When i was a kid i manually created the entire soundtrack for myself: i turned off the in-game sound effects, plugged the audio cables from my PS into a computer and recorded every single level for like 5 minutes. Then i edited the tracks and burned them onto a CD. Feels like such a waste if time now that youtube exists, but still proud of it

Holy Resourceful, Batman! a friend and I routed the audio from guitar hero to my guitar's wah-wah pedal and played guitar hero with a wah effect. Of course, it did the whole song, not just the guitar!

I did the same with a track from Ape Escape, and some PS2 games. PS2's sound level is lower than PS1's for some reason, and I got a lot of white noise while recording off PS2.

I also started out as a drummer. But over the years I wanted to set another challenge for myself & so slowly but surely I built my musical empire of learning guitar, bass, keyboards & vocals as well. And these days I'm very fond of writing soundtrack music as well. I'm mostly into writing for horror movies & like to use very much dissonance in my score writing. Really amazing how it subconsciously all starts during childhood while you carelessly play a video game & eventually you get influenced by all those fabulous soundtracks & eventually become a composer yourself. Upon revisiting the Spyro games & soundtracks after many years again, it's amazing how you completely perceive the soundtrack differently now as a musician. Knowning whats going on behind all those riffs & melodies. And being able to understand the formula on why it works so well. etc All the Spyro games are very funky in my opinion. Very heavy & lead centric basslines. Tight & complex drumming. Altogether a really emphasis on the rhythmic section.

Every time someone brings up Spyro (especially the first one) the music is almost always the forefront of the convo. I think it is a perfect example of a game where the music defines the atmosphere of almost every level perfectly. In a level like Gnorc Cove, I don't know what it is but something about it gives off a "working a job at a seaside harbor" vibe, which is so specific yet somehow Copeland was able to portray it in music.

The soundtrack certainly helped Spyro's aesthetic, but I think the core of the game was also so good. If you look at other games of this style at the time, the hub worlds were mostly just functional, Like Crash Bandicoot's hub world in 2 was just a circular room, Mario 64's was better with the castle motif, but Spyro's hub worlds were like their own mini levels, so there was always something to do, more to explore, you always felt like you were in an adventure. There also the fact that they were innovative with their enemies, they were unique in that the enemies weren't just mindless drones that did one thing (walking in a straight line, falling straight down, swinging back and forth, etc.) Enemies had personality, they'd run away from you, hide, or attack you in a unique, memorable way. People take that for granted now, but that wasn't always the norm, especially in early 3D titles. Spyro 1 was to Spyro what Super Mario Bros 1 was to 2D Mario games, the pure distillation of the game's mechanics executed to perfection. While I think 2 and especially 3 were good as well, I feel like all the future games relied on gimmicks that weren't necessary to have a good experience and they honestly dragged the games down. The original Spyro felt so focused in it's design, no unnecessary frills.

This soundtrack brings such bittersweet memories. I'll never forget it. I was nine when my grandfather just got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and wanted to distract me from what was going on because I was young and clueless at the time. He surprised me with a playstation one and tricked/told me that he couldn't get past a level and needed my help. He opened my world into Spyro and as I got past that level, he eased on out of the room. To this day that playstation and disc still exists and was passed down to my brother as a gift since he never got to meet him. He passed away right before I turned 11 and it's been 18 years since he has passed away. But I'll never forget him and I'll always appreciate this game even more for the fond memories that I had with him and it. I continued to play the rest of the trilogy as I got older and to see them finally remastered, is so awesome. I got to tell my kids just how awesome my/their Paw-Paw was and how he introduced me to Doom and many other games when I exposed them to Spyro. To me, I feel like he's still with me every time that I play it.

It's a shame games even remotely close to this are still following a different theme, even if there isn't many games like this. I'm so glad there is rumors spreading from someone noticing the spyro 4 trademark. I personally think early 2000s/late 90s games, 80s music and 90s pc software was elite. I hate the fact that I never grew up with last generations culture.

When I used to play spyro I would think"geee this music is beautiful, great drummer, these guys must be japanese...", then years after I discovered the main cause about this ost emphazising on drums... it is because it was made by one of my heroes and a great rock drummer... Mr Stewart Coppeland!!!. Hope he get's on youtube from time to time to check these comments and learn how happy he made us all. Not sure why they didn't keep such a distinct theme as the first one throughout the rest. As much as I love Copelands work his later stuff felt more and more over-processed. While Spyro the Dragon has a much cleaner sound signature. Ultimately Spyro 1 did have a better theme overall. Mystical, magical, and wonder inspiring, sparking your imagination so much. They slowly lost their simplistic charm as the series went on, introducing more and more characters that made the games actually feel more childish and gamified. Spyro 1 dropped kids in a world and left them to their devices with minimum exposition and hand-holding. Lets not even mention modern spyro games... I kind of feel sad for kids, games don't promote imagination or wonder anymore, they've become all hollywood with explosions and 'wacky' characters in your face all the time. P.S. Ice Cavern is a masterpiece.

I prefer Spyro 2's for the added variety, but I know what you mean, since I find 3's soundtrack to just have way too much weird sample stuff. There are still some golden nuggets there definitely. But 2 just hits the sweetspot for me. It feels like it doesnt deviate too much and still manages to have a cohesive sound. Weird enough, I have been ripping the soundtrack from the games themselves (I realize they arent the highest possible quality anymore, since the Reignited introduced some really high quality original masters, but I still think it's fun to rip them), and for some reason Spyro 1's track seems to be in stereo while rest of the games are in mono, which definitely gives Spyro 1 an edge.

***** No way. Everything is better as it is originally. I cannot stand all these remakes of classics like Final Fantasy VII and such. I like the polygons, and really, it isn't the graphics that make a game, but the story, character development, and soundtrack. Also, the time period, and this video game is just old, that is how it is and it is a part of its character

***** I wouldn't mind a hd version either.. I still like the old style, but a polished version would be awesome. Like, give Spyro real claws and spikes on the back. Make the crystal dragons partly transparent and put a flame inside. Sharper textures all over. Realistic water. Stuff like that. All of it while keeping gameplay and frame intact.

MeanderingWayfarer 092 By remake, he doesn't mean redoing the soundtrack or gameplay... just the graphics. I'd say a remake would be pointless and detrimental too if they touched aspects of the game, but if they just updated the graphics, it would be awesome.

(sry for not that correctly english) Eventhough I'm 14, I had experienced most of the games which were released in the 90s or early 2000s in my early childhood. Since two years I try to experience all the games which were released back then, I've also sold my PS3 so that I can afford a PS2 XD. And I love them (especially the Spyro, Ratchet and Clank and Rayman Franchise). They have their own charme, equal gameplay and a great world to offer. It really grinds my gears that the kids today are only buying this lifeless, commercial shit like CoD or other 08/15 shooter games, while the classics are getting forgotten more and more. The only focus of the publishers nowadays is to overtrump other publisher I wish I was born in the late 80s or early 90s and experienced the whole stuff. And what pisses me more of is that nearly nobody I know, knows about these glorious Franchises, the only thing the most of my Friends know that has sth to do with spyro is Skylanders -.-. Thank you

*As a child growing up in the 2000s, I absoloutely love Spyro! I put my life and soul into this game everyday. I play it 24/7, it's like my life! The original Spyro games made by Insomniac (Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2 Gateway to Glimmer/Ripto's Rage and my overall favourite, Spyro Year of the Dragon) have to be my first loves. It seemed to run in my blood line, my mum still stays up at **3:00** AM in the morning just to kick Gnasty Gnorc's butt. I can't help thinking how lucky kids in the 90s were to have Spyro! Even though there's thousands of games today, all the Spyro games will forever remain my favourite, nothing can ever ever ever beat the three original Spyro games for me.*

I really enjoyed the fact that the playstation boot up noise was played at the end. That was icing on the cake.

As an adult, I can really appreciate what an excellent job Copeland did matching the unique feel and theme of each level. The music just clicks.

These soundtracks bring back so many memories from about ten years ago. I love this music! It makes me feel so nostalgic. ^.^
