My 40 came in from the factory with a loose handle, meaning that if you're looking at the reel from the top (casting view) the handle moves side to side (left to right) where it attaches to the gear box. Is this ok!? I asked customer service and they said ok but that just doesn't seem right to me. Every time I want to reel the handle will move side to side while reeling (not good) in my opinion. It moves about an 8th to a quarter inch of total travel.

I have the 30ld. I was bottom fishing with the drag on full. Whenever I'm reeling in a nice fish the handle will just spin at times and not reel line. Is the reel broke? It does it on both that I have.

No that’s fine probably just means the fish is taking line... happens all the time with my penn international when I’m offshore fishing!

What size would be optimal for flatheads upwards of 40lbs? I know the squall line is saltwater, but this particular lever drag system is what brought me to this line of reels. Thank you in advance.

Level wind, star drag, and lever drag what is the difference?

Level wind has a automatic line pawl that moves as you turn the reel handle so you don't have to use your thumb to control the line lay on the spool. They are your bigger trolling reels for catching marlins etc. Also come in smaller sizes and this very video he his talking about. Set up and used correctly, these cast very well. You need a well educated thumb, but the casting is very smooth.

Cc Noble no man, the 60 is significantly smaller than a igfa 50 or even a 30. they are good reels but go with the fathom or the squall if your considering getting a reel in this sizing. i had a fathom 30ld2 absolutely an amazing reel landed alot big stuff on such a compact reel. my nephew has a squall 60 ld and it feel cheap and the lever for the drag system feels tight and cheap. i currently have a squall 30 vsw i use for shark fishing and it an amazing reel as well, but im not a huge fan of these single speed lever drag squalls.

jeremy reilly I looked up the specs..it does wiegh a few more ounces and holds more line..also drag is heavier too...

jeremy reilly I have read mostly very good reviews on the reel and some bad ones ...It compares to the TLD 25 and is alot cheaper..Not sure whats better cause i never had the Penn squall 60 ld

Cc Noble im telling you from using one . go with the fathom if you cant spend alot. its a little more money but you will be alot happier with it. what are you going to be using it for ? the squall vsw is another story but the single speed squalls feel cheap. im a die hard penn fan i own 4 penns currently and have owned atleast a dozen more but if you want a reel that is going to function and feel like a higher end reel go with the fathom. im not saying the reel is garbage but compared to the fathom its not even in the same league. i sold my fathom to help offset purchasing the squall 30vsw and i absolutely love it but now im looking to buy another fathom 30ld2 for blacktip fishing just cuz i loved it so much. it feel and functions like a $500 reel. if your bot into the 2 speed then the make a single. if your not into the lever drag they make a star. if your not wanting to level your line by hand they make a levelwind. i have nothing to gain or lose by telling you this im just trying to help you out since ive owned and fished both.
