The first things you notice have improved are 1. the refereeing conventions (not the refs themselves - a lot more lets were just given back then, a lot less emphasis on "playing the ball") and 2. the video quality :)

Did Peter Nicol ever live in Rio de Janeiro? I was one of the founders of the Rio Squash Club and there was a Scottish family name Nicol that played at our club all of the time. They were dedicated and very good players. Who knows?

The winning backhand on match ball must have gone to the left side, as both players looked in that direction. It was so perfectly hit that Nicol didn’t make a single step toward the ball. Now that’s a superb backhand, even if I can’t track exactly where it went.

Even if you have a good product, you have to sell it. I remember that I talked in 2006 at the world championship in Cairo with an elder journalist that used to cover squash. He said that now squash is far more enjoyable to watch than in the 80s, but far less people are interested by squash.

@@FabIsFab7867 I agree with your elder journalist friend -- I consider the dynamic modern game is much more enjoyable than the attritional game of the eighties and before (the old game usually comprising lots of long, boring rallies up and and the side wall)

Absolutely amazing squash player , you have to put the game in perspective. Technology has change dramatically and the game has changed ie the tin is lower now than back then ,squash rackets , squash balls , footwear etc. Also the all glass court hasn’t been around for long back then only used for major tournaments because of the cost involved to transport it around where as today every complex has all glass court situated on there premises. Tell me have you ever played on a all glass court because I’m telling you it aren’t like playing on a normal court. Today’s players are a lot fitter and faster because the tin lower by 2 inches .
@petereedy6092
@petereedy6092 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Jansher was "really actually amazing" -- he had the ability to read the situation extremely quickly and respond with accurate and well-weighted shots. I had the pleasure of refereeing him twice back in the day, and was amazed at the ease and fluidity of his movement. The only later players I can immediately think of who had similar fluidity of movement are Ramy Ashour and Ali Farag

@@mikemcsherry1120 Today’s players also benefit hugely from PARS point system most of Janshers games were the old style handout scoring. So there’s no way they were fitter Jansher would go around most of the top ten today with ease if he was in his prime.

@@Tyt130 Ramy Ashour says the player he would want to play against the most is Jansher. Jansher is probably the most complete player ever. He'd win against Elshorbagy 9/10 imo. I mean I really can't see a way for Mohammed to win frankly. Jansher's movement was better than Farag and his backhand was probably the best ever. Maybe he could be rushed by quick volleys?
