Hate to see Asal win. Look at that smirk on his face. All he wants is for people to like him. He doesn't care about the game, or respect his opponents, he just wants to be famous. Unfortunately asal has gotten under Elias skin and Elias is starting to play against the man/boy rather than the ball. Asal is definitely primarily at fault here with usual blocking play and awful unsportsmanlike behaviour compounded by an awful biased crowd but it’s the higher ground Elias needs to take (not easy of course) which is to not show any emotions and concentrate on his game and not get rattled. This of course can only occur if the refs keep their responsibility and reign asal in from the start. It was such an awful messy dangerous match to watch. Kids please don’t ever play like this….ever.

Im sorry, the game was actually unplayable for elias and this gifted player was unrightfully robbed of an opportunity of really expressing himself on the court. And squash fans the world over deserved to witness a fair contest. That is the elephant in the room that people are likely hesitant to mention.

I agree. About half of these incidents seemed to be Elias insisting on taking an inside line to every drop, regardless of the fact that they were played fading into the side wall and Asal was clearing to the middle and offering a direct line. Unfortunately Elias gets irritated noticably easily and this isn't the first time he's been in this sort of match. I remember seeing a side court match a good few years ago vs Dessouky which was far worse than this one, ending in bad gestures and booing from the crowd.

@@M0odez elias seems to be a reasonably even tempered guy but sure, he did get really animated tonight. However, asals behavior is in open violation of norms around fair play. You know before the play starts - Asal vs Elias will be a battle! Asal is an ashole on court, no question about that, but it s such a shame as he has such a raw talent for the game! And after watching several games between these two you can tell by now that Asal has gotten under Elias' skin. Elias is a great player, and I would like to see him as a winner here, but it feels like he has been sitting at home before the game and getting all worked up about the rumor surrounding Asal. It's as if Elias game strategy is not on his own game but on exposing Asal's bad reputation. Don't like what I am seeing here, this is giving the brilliant game of squash a bad reputation. On the other hand, Farag - the Mr Gadget gentleman of the game. Love to see him play any time!

This is not sportsmanship, it was a shamefull spectacle and asal is getting away with it. He refuses to allow his opponent to maintain any semblance of composure, by screaming self righteously between points. As much as I hate watching Asal's antics at times, I have to say Ellias is also to blame for a number of those incidents. For the final point in the first game he could have easily played that ball, and for his conduct stroke in the second point he was a tad aggressive and it was a great return from Asal. Both contributed to a horrible game of squash, and Asal again got under Ellias. It seems the best way to beat Asal is to just silence him with play, but given how quick he is it can be difficult. someone will get hurt badly very soon and I hope its Asal. Just because he brings in the crowd doesn't mean the PSA should condone such behaviour. I really hope Farag doesn't get injured by his opponent.

I'd always hoped squash would stay out of the narcissistic chest beating. Have to pray that Asal stays a one off. I didn't like it when Gautier used to demand adoration but he at least didn't try to demean his opponents.

What I noticed following PSA World Tour lately (3-4 years) is that split referee decisions normally go to (a) higher seeded player and/or (b) Egyptian player (which is often the same, due to the abundance of elite level Egyptian players). Thus, being lower/non seed vs higher seed (especially from Egypt) has become an uphill battle in close matches. I don't know what good does it to PSA, but there's been too many occasions when that happened and decided game outcomes for it to be just a coincidence. We all appreciate that Egypt (and Middle East generally) are currently the main financial backers for PSA, but for pro squash to continue its rise as a globally attractive product this needs to be addressed .

Asal pushes his opponents so hard who already occupied T zone, rather than going around properly. This is kinda indirect stroke disturbing opponents normal play, which needa to be penalized.

Agreed! Even when he has no reason to touch the opponent. Elias tried to make a drop shot from the T with Asal pushing his back, it got really high! It was a drop shot! Not a surprising, fast, strong cross court. Asal had no right to push him in that ball!

Asal and Elias match is the perfect demonstration of why squash will never be in the Olympics. Gamesmanship, ill-tempered and lacking any respect for the opponent or their safety. It'll probably take a severe injury before someone bothers to speak to the players as a group. I don't doubt the skills, athleticism and fitness of the players. I suppose it gives the crowds and PSA something to talk about. It won't win over those new to playing or watching squash. This is despite the more attack minded modern game rather than more attritional spectacle in years gone by.

Arguing with refs or complicated decisions are absolutely not what’s stopping Squash being in the olympics though. Olympic Hockey is played in three 20 minute periods, but the games can literally go over two hours because of arguing and refereeing. Rugby, soccer, wrestling, weightlifting, basically every single sport at the olympics has people arguing with the referees. It’s not in the olympics because they think it won’t make money.
@chrisgoldsmith4397
@chrisgoldsmith4397 2 жыл бұрын
@@bustertornado5433I agree with you that money is important, hence golf's inclusion. My issue is not even that players debate decisions or even if the referees get it wrong. It's subtle blocks, failing to clear, appealing mid point and now in semifinals ranting at others coaches and screaming in opponents faces. The reason it's not successful is that sport needs ambassadors not brats. Most players can barely shake hands at the end these days.

The really worrying thing about Asal is his popularity amongst the young viewers. He embodies the modern narcissistic, social-media-driven arrogance and preening where noisy antics and showmanship trump everything else, as it’s ‘entertaining’ for those with a short attention span. Sickening to think there will be a generation of younger players growing up idolising this sort of behaviour.

So the court is slippery from what we see........that's bad and not what you want to see happen to players at all, the organisers of the tournament need to rectify that immediately. The referee didn't do a good job at all in the Elias/Asal match, another debacle with Asal infringing pretty much constantly, the tournament referees need to take a hard line with this player, unfortunately he's sometimes a menace on the court and prone to bad behaviour as we know.

what an ugly game of squash between asal and elias. referee lost control of the game and both players conduct during the game was not correct. how can they play for strokes and contact, while asal is changing his lines after hitting and elias actively trying to get points for that. if the psa lets this continue someone will seriously injure themselves or their opponent. bad audience aswell, only cheering for asal and riling him up to do more of his dangerous play
