844 cubic inches, 5.25" bore x6.5" stroke. Norm Meinert has one with a blade that is in running condition. It was demonstrated at the second AC Jamboree in 1998 I believe, it had no problem pushing out big box elder trees.

These early Allis Crawlers were built on the Monarch Chassis, Allis bought them out and continued the line and built them at the plant in Springfield Illinois, until the demise of Allis in 85. That large casting at the rear is the gearbox of the transmission. I think the choice of steering wheel was an early option, the parts book shows them avillable in both lever steer and the steering wheel. This series was replaced by the HD series in the early 40s. You can't find many of these big Allis L s, so there's not many left. Like all early Crawlers, tracks and steering clutches are always the problem.

Just watched Kyle's walk around. He does a good job and points out many similar details as you, bit your video is nearly twice the length and as such you were able to point out additional detail over that of Kyle's. In particular is when you got down and under the carriage with the camera to show the wear through condition of bushings. Also the driver side rear sprocket you showed how a possible tracking problem is shearing the sprocket's side surface. You questioned why the rear housing protruded as far back as it did in design, and more. Clearly you two friends enjoy competing with each other for the good of your channels. Keep it up. Take care.

Nicely done. That Allis has your name all over it. Rebuilt with patina like 5J and add a blade, that would be a show stopper. Excellent project for Squatch in the years ahead 😅 Gasoline or distillate ... Might be cool to raise the compression to say 8:1 and run it on gasoline. More work, less fuel burn ?? Just the idea of a well done steering wheel on a dozer is enough to put it into special status 🙃

what a nice piece of history. that would be a project for someone with all the wear showing. tractor data shows 89hp@1050 rpm. torque monster like the RD. 22,000lbs. thanks for showing us this.

Hello from Tasmania. I think that lump at the back end is the gearbox. Because it looks similar to the HD 14 back end. I like the steering wheel just like the old Fiat 52 crawler and some Cletrac crawlers . Thanks Kerry.

Yeah. I reckon you'll find those 'dog-leg' pieces are either end of a torsion bar suspension. In the 40s, the German Panther & Tiger tanks both had suspension set-ups of just torsion bars . . .

Excellent video that is a huge engine in that crawler tractor that is a Allis chamlers right after they bought out I believe it was called monarch tractor company that built a partial diesel engine that fired spark plugs instead of compression ignition and it burned gas to start it and switched over to the other fuel when it was warm enough like a all fuel tractor engine

I was watching another channel they were working on a 1942 Caterpillar Grader, , I looked at the size of the little grader, and I thought this machine belongs over on Squatch23. It would be lovely to see this old little grader sparking in the sunshine, returned to the glory days of her youth. BUT SHE NEEDS SQUATCH23 TO RESCUE HER!

We have a pair of these in the collection. I IRC, that lever is for high or low range on the trans. Both of these have 2 carbs on the engine, on a common intake. Nice runners with the 6 cylinders.

This seems a good place to ask a dumb question. I've been watching quite a few videos of civil engineering projects from the 1950's and 60s in the UK. Watching this channel (and it's friends) has made me well enough acquainted with Caterpillar equipment that I can say they're not at all common on these videos. They do appear, but not often. (short cut question) does anyone know why Caterpillar equipment wasn't common on 1950 and 60's projects in the UK? General question - can anyone point me at an idiot's guide to recognising common earth moving brands? Are there any signature features that don't change much over time?

My nabor down the road has a allis chalmers E and that thing is a brute I remember him telling me it would burn like 1 gallon every 15 20 mins he said it ran a saw mill for its life then he bought it and kept it well in his barn he says it cost to much to even to play around ..... cool video man I love my allis chalmers B it's a treat to push dirt

I watched the walk around on both the channels and enjoyed them both. With a 844-cid gas engine, Question I'm sure many viewers might have, why hadn't AC switched to diesel at that time? We know diesel technology was available in 1936... Squatch's RD6 as proof....

I have to say yours is the better walkaround. Provide more information and closer shots. I enjoy Kyle's as well, though I'm getting a little tired of the disembodied voice gig. Hard to relate to when you don't ever see a face.

Both you and Kyle have different styles of telling stories. In the end of the day it's important the information gets spread not how it's being spread. Hopefully the engine on the Allis Chalmer model L is not stuck after sitting outside so long. The idea of using the steering wheel on a crawler seems to be really old. I know the Harkov factory T-150 crawler is the only other one I know that utilized the steering wheel for turning. I wonder if the Allis model L has a 6V starter?

In comparison a 2470 Case engine is 510 cubits.800 in the L with not a huge carby. Must have some large jets? AL B.

Considering the 844 cubic inch engine, not only does the starter look small, but so does that single barrel updraft carburetor. I'm sure it's huge compared to what would be on a Ford 8N but still looks dwarfed. I'm guessing that beast must have had awful low compression to be able to be rotated by such a small starter.
