Squid Gang Season 1 Recap
Ok so Squid Game follows Gi-Hun a man who's down on his luck after losing just about everything that means something to him.
His marriage failed, he lost his job, is in deep over his head with gangsters and now faces the fact that his daughter is going to be leaving South Korea with her mother and new family. To make matters worse his mother is also at deaths door and she requires medical treatment in order to save his life.
Seems like things are going worse than this channel is however his fortune seemingly changes when he meets a man at a train station that offers him the opportunity of a life and death time.
Desperate for money Gi-Hun finds himself somewhat squidnapped and drafted into a battle royale between himself and 456 contestants worth a grand prize of 45.6 billion. Throughout we watch as the players are wittled down to one in games of red and green, honey combs, tug of war, hopscotch and one that will have you losing your marbles due to the betrayals in it.
The Meaning Of The Colours
The season is a blast to watch and early on it sets up this idea of division within colours that thematically ends up coming full circle by the end.
The colours Red and Green are introduced and these are actually classed as opposites on the colour spectrum.
Both are mentioned in the passwords, they become the name of the first game and even the contestants wear green whilst the guards don red. The show is absolutely laced with these opposing colours and they in many ways very much represent the divide between the powerful and powerless. As we know from our own society this divide is often showcased between the rich and the poor and we learn that there are a vast number of wealthy men who actually oversee the entire operation and that this is all for their entertainment.
Rather than being seen as people, the players are very much just numbers and this is demonstrated in the fact that they are literally given these as their names.
Along the way, Gi-Hun meets an elderly man named number 1 and the fact that he's the first drafted into the game should give you a clue towards his true identity at the end.

Its probably because the games really revealed their inner sides and survival instinct. Gi hun tho rash and hot tempered, was always compassionate and a happy go lucky kind of guy, as seen by how he tipped the horse betting counter lady, fed the stray cat and approached il nam happily from their first encounter. On the other hand, sang woo was intelligent and conscious which made him more calculative and selfish (as seen in the second, fourth and fifth game and how he killed saebyeok). Sang woo was also prideful (he lied to his mom that he was on a business trip and didnt tell her the truth even when he was comitting suicide. He also didnt help gi hun in the 2nd round and partnered ali in the 4th round instead because he thought gi hun was dumb.)

All the character's death were already foreshadowed in Episode 2. Ali is eliminated because sang-woo took his marble the same as he took his boss money. Deok-su jumped on the bridge and was eliminated in the game by falling off the bridge. Sae-byeok die because she was stabbed on her neck same as she threatened someone with a knife on their throat. Sang-woo almost commit suicide in the bathtub and was eliminated from the game by killing himself. Also, the old man died from a brain tumor. Gi-hun swore on his mother's life, and his mother died in the end. Wow.

What I didnt understand is why they allowed Sang-woo to kill Sae-Byeok, then Gi-Hun lunges for Sae-Byeok and they stop him. The whole game they emphasize how they want it to be fair, but there are tons and tons of examples of where they change the rules on a whim. Its OK to kill other players one minute, then the next its not allowed. Little things like this completely ruined it for me, maybe it was just really bad subtitles or something but a lot of the writing felt lazy or didn't even make sense.

the director actually said that the reason why gi-hun dyed his hair red was because it's suppose to represent his anger, they wanted him to dye his hair a color no one would expect him to even choose; more or less dye his hair in general.

What got me pretty hard was Sang-Woo spending the majority of the season spending time with Ali, and taking Ali under his wing, only to take advantage of Ali's trust in Sang-Woo. I get why Sang-Woo did it, I get where it makes sense narratively, and it makes sense for a person to betray a "friend" if self preservation is on the line, but it hurt to see. Episode 6 was definitely a huge turning point for the narrative of this series. It's the episode that easily fucked me up the most.

Agreed. That and the constant swapping between Sang-Woo and Ali's whole interaction, aswell as Gi-hun and Oh ll-nam. Going for betrayal to "dementia ridden heartache" was really rough. Seeing Gi-hun's face change and tear up every time he lied about Even or Odd was really hard to watch in contrast to how difficult it was to grasp Sang-Woo betraying Ali after everything they'd done together. It was so well done. I don't cry when watching things but that just about got me.

My fav theory is this one: every main character died in the games resembling what they did while out in the real world. Deoksu dies falling down a bridge - like he jumped off running away from gangsters. Sangwoo tried committing suicide in ep 2 in the end he kills himself. Gihun swore on his mother life to the old man, his mother passed away. Ali took the money from his boss and ran, in the end he got played the same way, Sangwoo taking his marbles and leaving him.

Exactly, also because apparently his disappearance was quite sudden! There is also the fact that apparently he didn't have any money to pay for rent, so it doesn't seem like he has been doing it for a while to gain monetary compensation. It gives question on why he was given such trust in organizing everything

In the scene where he goes through the records, Junho finds out that his brother was the winner of the squid game on some 20xx year. So it's possible the winners are later recruited for some major role if they can be trusted? If he really won the game what happened to all that money making him live in a small apartment where he can't even pay his rent (this is what Junho saw when he went looking for him) I assume that's why he joined for the money but as the Front man. I really hope Gihun and Junho team up in next season!

Sadly, I had a feeling in the first episode that somehow he had played this whole game before (but my guess in that first episode was that he was one of the former winners). Every comment and action of his would just confirm my suspicions - he knew these games so well and him being so confident in the first game, and especially when he ‘accidentally’ met the main character in front of a shop. If I’m not mistaken he said that he decided against continuing the game because of the main character and that didn’t make much sense, wasn’t he supposed to be a kind old man? What about the others? Lots of things didn’t add up. And I figured that he had to be an implant in the 6th episode. But I usually figure out most of the twists pretty early on 🥲🥲 and I’m not shocked most of the time. Episode 6 is still impactful though. I still cried a lot because I wasn’t certain I had guessed it right. And he seemed so cute and helpless :((

That death hit so hard, the fact that he was so emotionally broken at the end that he couldn’t even process it. He just lies down beside her and cries. He just witnessed multiple of his friends died, was forced to basically kill his childhood friends, just spent days going through hell and to top it all off he causes some of them.

Kurumi ちゃん it’s because he feels guilty, he thinks that that’s all blood money that he doesn’t deserve and shouldn’t use. It’s because of what he had to do to get it, he had to kill multiple people, watch hundreds die, beat and stab a childhood friend and watch new friends get killed. He doesn’t feel like he deserves the money nor should he use it.

It’s becoming more common for korean shows to get multiple seasons. Stranger is a show I highly recommend and Sweet Home as well. I’m not 100% it’s getting a second season but the way it ended it seems so.

to me, this whole show was extremely from a phycological perspective, seeing the people's minds evolve, to more soulless, then to more caring was insane and also the fact on how realistic it was for the people desperate for the money and all the backstabbing, personally i would rate this show 9/10 because it keeps you on your toes the whole time and is incredibly interesting.

Each game was actually illustrated on the wall THE ENTIRE TIME! They didn't see it, because the beds blocked them. Its only until almost everyone died, that the beds were removed. Jun-Ho the true MVP imo. Most badass performance in terms of what he was doing. Him surviving makes sense too when you really think about it, the fact his brother was the leader, shot him in the shoulder, no body was shown, even with his little dialogue, he clearly cares about his brother, now that he knows his brother is running this hell hole. I’m sure he wants nothing more than to stop him himself, hence why he possibly didn’t tell the cops.

I think he legitimately liked the MC so he sacrificed his "gameplay" because he rather see how his "friend" does in the game. The old guy is seen as the bad guy for many, but in reality he didn't do anything wrong. He gave people multiple choices to play or not, and his commentary about happiness was spot on. The contestants are just as miserable as the rich guys watching the game (the gay rich guy even just left the game because it didn't interest him even though he had everything he could have wanted). The happiest people in the show were the ones who did not worry about what they could have or didn't have, but those who were focused on the present. There was a hint to this theme in the recruitment game, as people got so invested in the game they even forgot about the money for a second and were most excited to try and slap the recruiter. People are essentially happiest when working towards a goal.

One of the things I have to say I really appreciate about this series is that they do not rush anything, everything feels real and paced in a way that feels natural. There are some dramatic moments but they do not feel pushed. I feel in a Western version of the show they would push things toward a faster pace and probably more gore. From the outset I was intrigued and entertained. It would be a great series to build a world in for Netflix as long as they can keep it interesting and growing without being repetitive.

Not all Western series are like that. There are many highly rated series that take their time, carefully crafting the story and developing the characters. E.g Lost, Homeland, The Walking Dead (so long that it gets boring by season 6), Breaking Bad, to name a few.

I really liked how the show actually highlighted some minor characters like the married couple, the guy who knew which glass was fake and Deok-su's henchmen. I think the show handled them pretty well

I don't think Gi-Hun really cared about the Squid Games continuing on until that phone call. If he did, why didn't he call the number as soon as he got hold of the business card. Instead he called them while boarding his flight to LA. I think it's due to his dazed and confused personality, and changing his hair to red was his way of turning that corner and being more proactive in his life. Notice during the phone call, his temperament was victim mentality, then when the Squid games employee knew of his player # and location, he was reminded how out of control he was in his life and decided to turn around and do something about it for the good of the people.

SPOILERS - Personally, I think when Oh Il-nam died, Gi-hun thought the game would die with him since he was the mastermind behind it all. So, when he realized the game was still continuing, he probably felt a surge of all the ptsd laying dormant inside him for a whole year and battled with himself on what he was going to do about the phone call once he took the new business card. Hence the hesitation to call (and I do think he wanted to be a better dad more than destroying the game - at first- until he takes a bit of time to decide for himself and ends up choosing the game once more) During the initial call, he is signing up for the next game (in order to stop it once in for all, maybe from the inside somehow) and once they said his number, he was reminded of who he was and what he represented during the game and that was the mentality he almost instantly re-personified.

Something i would say about the ending as well is that it's paralleled to the birth of his daughter. Gi-Hun to me epitomes the good in humanity and such as he missed the birth of his daughter because of someone that was dying in the factory he was working at, he now is giving up seeing his daughter to save these people from the squid game. Life and death, you can't have one without the other and ultimately I feel like that's what this fantastic show comes down to.

Its crazy that when he says he's coming after them they say "just get on that plane" implying they have been tracking his every move since he left the game. I wasn't even sure if there would be a season 2... the final scene works as both a satisfying ending as well as a cliffhanger. It leaves things open ended but completes his emotional journey which is just another credit to the talented writing team

Before that last episode I was thinking there’s no possible way that they could make another season but after how it ended, they really did a great job of leaving us with so many questions like you said. And it also makes me think maybe the korean police guy survived and maybe him and player 456 team up to try and take this whole shit down. They really do have enough still going on to make a season 2 which is so fucken impressive if you really think about it. Kudos to the writing team for sure!!

I loved the casting. The main actor had one of those faces that was disheveled, worn out and covered in tension. In the next moment, he could appear simple and happy. He was child-like and fun loving like in the scene where he smiles for the photograph. Clearly he has had a hard life but there is an easily accessed sweetness inside him. I thought the actor made the switches back and forth seamlessly. It reminded me of the way the actor on Breaking Bad (Gus Freen) could appear to be an honest simpleton who ran a fast-food chain one moment and yet just by putting his face a different way and holding the tension in his eyes and facial muscles differently - a kind of monster would appear. I love when actors can handle this kind of emotional range simply with their faces. Many of the cast members were extremely gifted in this ability and it helped us either root for them or at least feel like we could understand their thinking just by watching their faces. Bravo to the casting directors!!

Sang woo put his mom in that position in the first place by putting her assets as collateral without her knowledge. Also making risky investments for his clients behind their back and losing all of the money. He had a cush job, good reputation, and his greed still took over him. I think his mom was definitely a motivating factor, but his own selfishness and greed was also a huge reason for the way he played.

Remember the guy who was paired with his wife in the marble game.We know that if everyone votes and quit the game the money is sent to the families of deceased ones.The fact that he was urging everyone to vote and quit after the marble game shows how perspective plays a role throughout the series. Some see his decision as a symbol of love for his wife and some see it as a symbol of greed. Same goes in life too. Our perspective decides our opinions.

I love the idea that the police officer is a alive and would potentially somehow meet up with the protagonist to take down the Squid Game operation. Love the take of Gi-Hun’s motives and decision-making, gréât analysis video!

I love that idea too and I hope it comes into fruition. In episode 2, there was a moment of silence after Gi-Hun said to the cop “Why would you think that I would be useful to you or anybody else?” So I feel in season 2, the cop is going to need Gi-Hun as proof the games exist since he got shot and fell into the water with his phone which means no more evidence.. and Gi-Hun will be willing to help the cop this time because he wants to stop the games and save others from dying.

What makes this horrific is the fact this could be a real thing in the future. This isnt an anime or anything fake, this is what real desperate people in a room fighting for money to win genuinely looks like. This conveys people being extremely desperate. Playing games like they used to as innocent children to fighting desperately for money. It’s a harmless children’s game to have fun and enjoy life however because of the money they aren’t playing like children, they are playing like adults. Adults who have given up on life and they see the cruelty in the world that children are blind to.

I just wish the games had been more creative. Most of them were pretty straightforward and did not require much thinking/strategy. They were mostly luck-based and majority of the times, the only advantage is when u have prior knowledge of the game

Ngl, I hated that ending. He literally was about to board a plane to see his daughter & passed on it because of some heroic endeavor he so desperately felt the need to insert himself back into. Like if you won, you simply won. He already felt guilty for not being there for his mom in the end, & is making the same mistake again when his daughter should be top priority in his life now. Smh what did y’all think tho?

Gambling the relationships of his loved ones; abandoning his daughter all over again just to let her down once again Gi-hun is seemingly doing the same thing number 1 said he did during the "marble game" forgetting his son's birthday not buying him a gift . Before boarding the plane he promises his daughter that he has a gift for her he won't deliver.

Yes that's what I thought! I expected him to get Cheol and at least try to find the mother, and also make Sangwoo's mum financial stable but I did think all the way through the season that Ilnam was Gihyun's father, so if that is true the ending makes sense because he's following in his crappy father's footsteps.

If you go back to the scene where he talks to his ex-wife, you'll find out his morals. He missed his daughter's birth because he wanted to save his coworkers life, but the coworker died anyway. At the end, he has another opportunity to save more lives, at the cost of abandoning his daughter. His daughter will be fine, he chooses to save the people who are in danger.

I just realised that the show foreshadows Sangwoos true nature when the police tell his mother that he is guilty of embezzlement, fraud etc, basically him using others for his own gain(Ali) and hiding his feelings

It also shows it in the game when they first come together as a group and they play the sugar shape game. He explains to them that you don’t want to put all of your eggs in one basket giving them an example of the stock market that he “had experience” with and sends them their separate ways. He was in debt because of stock fraud so for him to use that experience with his friends was a huge red flag.

But! We also see a true relationship forming. I think he tried but ultimately lost. He gave Ali bus money, let him use his phone and bought him food, (not that these are huge irl but are shown to us in the movie), tells him to hide his hand and then has a heart to heart after which asks Ali to call him Hyung. He wanted to make it out with Ali, he immediately chose him to partner with over his older friend. Even though Ali is disadvantaged by being an immigrant and not knowing the game and being physically disabled. It’s not a good choice unless you KNOW the next game is about manipulation. His desperation and greed got the better of him which we see earlier on. His shame from being a embezzler even though his community brags about Seoul university to the point he tells gi hun to stop. They get to a point where they know only one person can win. I don’t think he used Ali (the entire time) in that sense, but do think he was calculated and selfish. I mean he out his mums house and livelihood up for collateral. Edit: in addition, he thought he deserved the money more than anyone especially Ali due to the betrayal. Ali had a child and was good natured. Sang woo already SPENT the money he stole. He lived out that life, he didn’t need it only to keep himself from jail. And he didn’t let gi hun win because he thought gi hun deserved it, it was because he wanted his mum taken care of. Even if he got the money, he’d still face charges and reputation ruined.

The scene where Ali was walking around and doing what Sangwoo told him and after when Sangwoo gave the marbles... I exploded in tears. I knew he was going to deceive him, and i was angry for Ali to trust him.. But if it was me, I would do the same.... Big lesson- never trust people blindly, you don’t know what they have in their mind...

My theory towards the ending when Nam is on his death bed.. I feel this segment of the show is showing that he and 456 are indeed Ganbuu and that everything the old man owned as being game master is for 456. That maybe in the slightest way, 456 could be the savior for humanity to end the squid games. Maybe nam was terrified that the front man was onto more devious and devilish ways of pursuing the squid games and now that Nam fulfills his passion for enjoyment that it cognitively made him realize that if someone could end the regime of the squid game era that it would be 456. Throughout the show, the main characters were merely driven insane that their greed for money was ruthless as even the members were destined to be deemed killers to retrieve the cash prize. Even towards the climax of episode 9, 456 still couldn’t kill his childhood friend that even at the end of the tournament 456 didn’t even care about the money anymore and was willing to leave home after the torture of playing the games to that point and returning home with nothing. Nam probably viewed that instance that indeed people of humanity do exist which is why he feels or senses that 456 could be the one to put an end to the squid games. I could be totally wrong, but let me know how y’all feel about this theory! 👍🏽

the sunk cost fallacy felt so real in this show man. Felt real empathy for all the characters. If you already killed 400+ people...why waste their lives by quitting? This show went above and beyond to give the audience a very interesting philosophical quandry... its rare to get shows like this and i'm loving it.

My theory is Front Man was just like 456, after he won, he felt guilt and returned to try to get revenge and take down The Squid Game, but Nam talked him into becoming the Front Man, and most likely, his heir apparent. And that in fact all of the previous winners wound up returning to the Island to work for The Game, because despite their new found wealth, their lives still sucked on the outside.

Episode 6 was so mf sad. I felt so bad for Ali man he was such a cool guy. As for the ending I’m a little pissed that Sae-Byeok died especially because of Ji-Yeongs sacrifice but it was still a GREAT show. I don’t usually watch shows but I loved this.

i really liked Junho, the detective, and i think he was so smart he adapted so quickly with the system even though he didn't know anything about it he was one of my fav characters but they didn't give him enough screen time and the show did him dirty at the end :( hope he survives in the next season tho

I mean unless he’s some superhuman it’s impossible to get shot fall from a cliff into deep waters and still manage to swim your way to safety, tend your wound, and find help. Now that many people know the "strategy" for tug-of war. The counter strategy is to not pull so hard at the first 10 secs, then go 1-2 steps forwards to let them fall, then quickly pull for the win

Remember when Gi-hun was let back into the real world after the first game and Sae-byeok was with him too. He swore on his mom that he wouldn’t hassle her for pickpocketing him if she untied him. And he ended up hassling her for doing it. Fast forward and his mom dies. Coincidence?

I loved the flow of Gi-Hun's character. He was a compassionate protagonist but he didn't let the story move him, which we expected that he should since it's a survival game and we need him to at least be ruthless to win. Instead, he was the one who kept lowering his walls so others can come in. He made friends with Sae-Byeok (the one who reminded Gi-Hun who he really is), was the first one to befriend Il-Nam (which in return made him on his side and provided him the luck the game required), and ultimately brought back Sang-Woo his conscience (ultimately letting him win). One scene I liked is that one night Gi-Hun convinced Deok-Su to stop the second murdering spree just because he was afraid of the threat he was in. I'm excited to see how his character goes for the later seasons. He's still compassionate, but brought a part of Il-Nam's wisdom.

Found myself binging the whole season on a gloomy day. Decided to rewatch it again and noticed so many things you won’t realize the first time around. One thing I noticed is that after every game, they depict the games on the wall of the dorm. Also during the first game, number 1 is never recognized by the motion sensor. Happy watching!

I think that people misread the last scene between the Old Man and Gi-hun. I think the Old Man genuinely liked Gi-hun and orchestrated their final meeting in order to help Gi-hun move on with his life. After the Games ended, the Old Man knew that Gi-hun had not touched his prize money and was basically wasting his life away. So the Old Man set up one final meeting with Gi-hun. The whole thing with the guy freezing out on the street and the person returning to help him was set up by the Old Man (just like he set up the Games). They were all working for him. (Didn't anyone find it rather convenient that there would be someone freezing outside who was perfectly in view of the Old Man's window and that somebody would return to help him just seconds before the Old Man's bet with Gi-hun ended?). The whole thing was carefully arranged by the Old Man in order to restore Gi-hun's faith in humanity and allow him to move on with his life after the Games had left him a broken man. So in the end, the Old Man was a true Gganbu. He could have kept his existence a secret, but he decided to expose his identity to Gi-hun in order to help 'save' him. It was his final gift to Gi-hun to restore his belief in humanity after the Games had destroyed it.

The director claims that the series was planned since 2010. To me, the series hit so much to the viewers when they chose to release it post COVID as everyone would definitely relates to the contestants being desperate for money and would do anything just to survive.

Jun-ho is probably alive because if his already dead then they would show the body and also he's the front man's brother he wouldn't kill his brother like that, infact he only shot him in the arm so it's possible for him to survive.

i think so too! in that scene where the Front Man was looking at himself in the mirror, he sees Jun-ho looking back at him, and they both have shoulder wounds that are at the same spot on the mirror (FM: right shoulder, JH: left shoulder). so maybe Front Man might think, if i survived this shot, my brother would too...?

Yes of course. Considering how most of korean dramas get directed. There's 90% out of 100 that he's not dead and may end up as a 3rd party or vip in the game

I guessed the elderly man was a founder of the games early on because I thought the games had a 1950s vibe to them and that would have been the time when the old man was a child. However, I thought that the Front man was his son and made the games for the old man to enjoy and kickstart his memories or something. Therefore the marble games didn't make me feel sad, just very tense.

001 was 456 father. Whe 456 said his father beat him (referring to his lactose issue) and 001 said he did the same to his son. It registered with me then.

That's what I was thinking too. As well as the old man saying he lived in that kind of neighborhood and Gi hun saying the same. We never did get any information on his father.
