Exactly. The shows getting the most attention are those shining a light on inequality. As an American, it's not as common to have a movie or show include inequality as a major theme, so given that inequality is a topic at the forefront of American politics, these Korean shows and movies are filling a niche that our film industry doesn't feel so comfortable with. The violence in Squid Game and Parasite also appeals (whether that's right or wrong) to American viewers and, as noted, it looks incredible, so it's altogether catnip for Americans. While I can't speak for all other countries, it does seem that inequality is on the minds of people all across the globe.

Well, maybe it would be higher than 4%, but I'm unconvinced. With such wide understanding of nearly certain death, or if you can do math, that your chance of success in the squid game is (0.219% normally) about twice as likley as being born into the top 0.1% of wealth (0.0875). It really doesn't make since to play. You already lost the first match, so having twice the chance in another game with the consequence of very early death essentially cancels out mathematically. If the game could net billions of dollars it would improve the value but not by much. What is a life worth? What are the total unique experiences of between 1 to 60 more years worth? Probably more than 38 million dollars.

You guys keep forgetting that both Sangwoo and Gihun are gamblers and got to their bad financial situation because of life choices they made and not what society has forced them to. No one forced Gihun to gamble his and his mothers money away. And no one forced Sangwoo to greedily place a lot of money in the stock market so much so it was just no longer an investment but rather a gamble.

@@llkg9 no theres really no support for people tbh, many companies/businesses go under due to bad leadership and fire all the employees, the biggest cause of debt in the u.s is medical debt which people have no control over becasue its just genetic or an accident happened. Even military people get no mental or financial support after they're mentally scarred from fighting. Or immediately discharged as soon as they develop ptsd. People forced to get a job because theire parents die etc theres so many things that can happen. Many people's lives go under due to circumstances outside of their control its very ignorant to assume its due to people's free choice all the time.

For much of the show Oh Il-Nam represented elderly poverty for the viewer. It wasn't until the end that we discovered that we had been duped by him. I think this character also speaks to the lack of real connection and not the imaginary/shallow relationships that permeate society. Finally, poverty of all sorts was present, but the majority of elderly players died early because they were the weakest ones in the group. Oh Il-Nam stayed alive because of two main advantages (knowing the games because he ran them/adapted them for his purposes and the head man made sure Oh Il-Nam's instructions (when uttered) were followed

The idea was rejected over and over, he had financial troubles, he wasn’t happy with himself. So after all of that, I feel like he deserves all of the love, praise and attention the show is getting. @@blueeyes2007 It was rejected because it was too controversial for S. Korean shows as it was a criticism of how their society is corrupt. Similar to American society except America loves to do things that are critical of its own society. For example on April 16 2014 the Sewol Ferry tragedy that senselessly caused the deaths of over 300 people MOSTLY students was covered up from the very top of their government. Any artist/entertainer that spoke out was actually blacklisted by the government. This even caused their President at the time to be impeached and removed from office. I believe the captain got a life sentence. They don't take too kindly to criticism. So Netflix picking it up was an amazing opportunity.

Food, fashion, music and even language from the east Asian country are becoming ubiquitous in UK-life with so-called K-culture becoming so popular with Brits the Oxford English Dictionary added 26 Korean words to it’s latest edition this week. Widely believed to be an authority on the English language, the OED said we’re all ‘riding the Korean wave’ and embracing the country’s delicacies which have become the ‘epitome of cool’. Sales of Korean food staples are soaring in Waitrose and Marks & Spencer, while Korean-made Squid Game is set to become the biggest drama ever released on Netflix within just three weeks of it dropping on the streaming site. *Korean Food Goes Mainstream in LA --Mar 04, 2019

The dubbed voices are usually so shitty, with stupid, crap-acting voices... so yeah, let's listen to the chosen actors and read the subtitles, because they sometimes give us a fun surprise. Ali Baba sells pirated dvds in Africa, and we used to buy them and the subtitles were tooooo funny. Sometimes it was like, a movie in English which had been subtitled into Chinese, and then those subtitles were translated BACK into English. The fun rolls on.

@@JM-gg8ko Maybe we are running with different definitions of woke? If your use of it is just a reference to "cancel culture", or gender studies/awareness, or racial studies/awareness, or maybe the ethos of campaigning for increased political engagement for poor and marginalized groups, or maybe radical "leftivism" in general-whatever the term woke refers to as you are using it now, it remains an umbrella term for individual social, political and intellectual activities that predate the term itself. On the other hand, some of the time when people say woke they are really just referring to the social pressure of maintaining some status of being aware and (at least outwardly) concerned with these issues. Maybe that's what you mean? But if you are referring to the subject matter addressed by "woke" lefties compared to the subtext of Squid Game, there is certainly overlap. There is no coincidence that this show (and others like it) have reached a critical mass. For better or for worse our "woke" society is highly receptive to the messaging. Crucially though, it's well written, and overall offers a captivating and at times touching visual experience. The quality of the show is the primary driver of its success. I think what's interesting is how the subtext enhances that quality, and makes the show even more palatable to certain audiences, and less to other.

Except this. Guns are illegal in South Korea. So is ammunition. The only guns in South Korea are in highly controlled shooting galleries. Private ownership of guns is not allowed at all. So all the shooting you see in Squid Game. All the guns. Are all illegally owned. In the US guns are everywhere and instead of some mad dystopian villain using them in some children games to murder hundreds, they are used by thousands of Americans to kill other Americans. We've just had something like 13 mass shootings in the USA in the first 13 days of October alone. There has only been one mass shooting (by a policeman) in South Korea which happened in 1982. So this show is viewed in South Korea as purely fictional whereas in the USA it's seen in more of a realistic possibility.

The show subtly criticizes capitalism of today, especially when the North Korean girl gets asked if it’s better in SK than in the north and she stays silent. I think this brings up a good conversation to have: The capitalist countries of today have developed into oligarchies where tech giants and other big franchises (ESPECIALLY in the food and medical industries) have a tight grip on society and basically dictate most of the narratives of the world. With the COVID crisis spurring people to quit their 9-5s and start their own businesses, I hope the people start to take the power back from corrupt businesses and industries that have way too much power and are polluting the world, both literally and metaphorically. If there is anything you should take away from this show: please start having these conversations with those around you. Support small businesses to bring back the essence of what capitalism used to be, and demolish this oligarchy that took its place.

As a whole, no, but if you break it down into elements, like topic/themes and plot devices, yes, it can. The theme of inequality is on many peoples' minds globally. However, some of the details, such as dalgona candy, are Korea-specific.

Yes it can be the Korean games certianly and many other korean specific cultural references, but certianly the overall themes about inequality and human nature is global specific, thats what makes the show so succesful its because many people from around the world can relate to it!!

As an American, I think it’s entirely plausible in the United States. Especially how the VIPs were saying they bet on contestants like they bet on horses. The rich don’t see us as people, they see us as a means to an end. As customers making them rich and as cheap labor. At some point I think they will have us do something like the Squid Games for their mere entertainment. That’s why they keep us desperate enough to bust our asses for poverty wages.
@tn-t
@tn-t 2 жыл бұрын
I'm genuinely surprised at how many people actually missed the main point of the show. A masterful critique of capitalism. "Squid Game" casually reflects the sad reality that is the global society today (focusing on Korea) - filled with sexism, racism, discrimination in general, betrayal, greed, desperation, pain fear, struggle... At the same time, a story about teamwork, friendship, trust and loyalty, life's true values, selflessness, determination, resilience... One of the best shows I've seen in a while. Each flaw and virtue, be it social or individual, is purposely subtly accentuated to spread the message that in a world where no roles are enforced and morality is meaningless, when we have to rely on our basic instincts for survival - we're all equal. It's very slightly reminiscent to "Lord of the Flies," in a sense, but with adults. Very enjoyable. Does humanity exist beyond pretension? Edit for the confused souls: The show actually implies that we're NOT EQUAL AT ALL, but in an environment where morality, ethics, even reason and everything else that is considered the basics of society and civilization is meaningless - NOTHING matters. Nothing is expected of us just because we're young or old, women or men, black or white, gay or straight... Our identity is IRRELEVANT, or rather insignificant - we're just slightly advanced animals trying to survive.

It rather portays today' s world where the citizens ( green ones) are played against by politicians ( red ones) for the entertainment of the rich elite ( vips). It rather portreys communism where everyone has "equal" chances but at the end ends up dead.

The series shows something totally different. We re told that we re equal but we re not. There s always elite circle controlling us citizens. In communism people are given numbers that you can scan and they are just numbers taken care of by their masters who offer free bed and free food. Some may get rich but only at the expense of the others. On the other hand you have capitalistic world where you are a master of your own fate but you need to work hard. Message is there in the movie.
