Today I check out a Squier 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster Vintage Edition I got by trading in my 40th Anniversary Tele to GC. Before playing the demo I did remove the strings, polish the frets, and set it up so full disclosure this was not the factory setup.

I got the same guitar two days ago and I absolutely love it! I played many Fenders and this Vintage Edition Jazzmaster is the ONE! I also have a Fender MIM Telecaster from 2003, which is my main guitar. But that neck on the Squier Jazzmaster is almost better feeling. Maybe it‘s the Satin Finish. 😅 The fretwork on my Tele is buttery smooth. I also have a Epiphone Les Paul Studio from 2008, which is nearly identical sounding and feeling to expensive Gibsons I tried. Affordable guitars are sooo good nowadays, even in that time before. Allthough the fretwork on the Jazzmaster is shockingly good for that price range. The fret edges are a bit „edgy“ feeling, but that does not bother me, because I don’t really feel it while playing. It doesn‘t hurt in any way, don’t worry people! :) Greetings from Germany! 👋

I got mine in the Thomann summer sale. 290 euros though I had been tempted when they were full price. Have to say I’ve been blown away by mine. Resonant, lovely neck, tuning stability great, warm pick ups. And the fret work was fine on mine. It easily lives up to my MIM Road Worn tele. FWIW well, well recommended. Oh and 10’s minimum is a must.

I'm happy you lucked out wih the fretwork and yeah you grabbed it at the right time! I didn't have any tuning issues at all with it either after setting it up, and thought the pickups did sound decent. Just a shame how poor the fretwork on this specific guitar was.

Thanks for this great review and for sharing your thoughts (which are exactly my own). I’ve wanted a Jazzmaster for ages, saw the massive price drop on Thomann and ordered this exact one. I always try guitars first, but living in Mauritius, Jazzmasters are hard to find. Anyway, when I unboxed it, I took a close look at the finish, and I was underwhelmed. The satin neck I really like, but the satin paint job looks so cheap. As others have said, the sand one probably looks better. I did a little setup, polished frets, put on some 10’s (did your lock tite bridge trick) and I actually love the pickups. So for now I will accept its flaws and I think for the money, one can’t go wrong. As a side note, I own a paranormal cyclone (by Squier) and the finish and feel is far superior to this guitar. I figure this is a great way to get into Jazzmasters and for sure will one day buy a more expensive one. The Vintera 2 Jazzmaster looks great! All of the best 😊

Hey Lucy it's great to see you and hope you're doing well in Africa! I imagine trying guitars must indeed be a bit difficult. I agree the pickups are one of the best parts of the guitar for sure, they do sound pretty good! This is also the perfect guitar to see if a Jazzmaster is a good fit for you as a player. Thanks for watching

finally somebody comes out and tells this truth. these are OK but need a lot of work, its more cheap cort stuff and agree they feel like toys. People also forget Fender wanted 600 dollars new which is insane bad value imo. save your money and buy fender ventera 2 or Japan

Your point about Fender initially charging $600 isn't lost on me... and it just goes to show they are still making a decent enough profit selling these for half price. I didn't hate this guitar but I do think some of the praise is a bit overexaggerated.

It isn't the thruth. They are very good instruments after some work and I can tell you that as a luthier. We payed €298 for the last couple of months and €398 was the regular price in Europe. A lot of so called luthiers are good at adjusting a strat, tele, les paul or whatever but adjusting a Jag/Jazz is something different because of the rockin bridge and a different vibrato system with 1 spring. Take some fine sandpaper and rub down the neck, then it feels as good as every maple USA Fender neck I've played. Would I pay $600 for it ,yes. In Europe a Vintera Jazzmaster is €1090 and a MIJ is €1400 ....For €398 and an additional paint job for €200 if you don't like the finish, it is still a no-brainer IMHO

@@marcohermans3207 you are allowed to like these cheap guitars but it doesn't change reality they are made with cheap woods like nyatoh, crap hardware, crap electronic components, almost no Q&A at final assembly which explains the consistently bad fretwork or nut filing,, and made for dirt cheap labor in Indonesia that the big brands make huge profits on because that is good corporate business. Sadly, all of that is the truth. I would rather spend more money on one quality guitar once than try to polish one of these into something decent. This channel has shown me brands I had no idea existed that have completely changed how I view guitars.

@tomazodriziola. I like guitars in general. I don't care what is on the headstock. . Luckily there are enough reviewers who are telling the thruth about this guitars and finally praise them for what they are. They disassemble the whole thing and say what and how you can improve them without spending a lot of money. I have these guitars on my workbench a lot and they are good instruments but need some work.

I have this guitar in Desert Sand. I agree with the review. I managed to make the vibrato silent and smooth. I had to file and smooth the knife edge and corresponding surface in the plate, I tapered the spring spindle and I hammered the arm so it wouldn't click. I saved over 100 euros, the cost of a new vibrato unit. The electronics were crap, I ripped them out and replaced them because I wanted to repurpose the rhythm circuit anyway for phase switching. Used Switchcraft, CTS and Fender pots. Of course recut and polished the nut for 11s. Has been fine since.

That's the way to go if you don't mind the locking feature on the USA vibrato's . With a little bit of elbow grease you can make this equal to a USA unit. I changed the spring and that did the last 10% improvement. Total cost €3,50 for the spring and luckily I have enough sanding paper lying around. I have to upgrade the electronics in the future when I'm going to gig with it.

"Rage typing" hahaha. I love it. Welcome back. I am going to play devil's advocate here a little. But first the agreeance... I had one of these across my bench to set up for a new player. It was a surprise gift for her. Great guitar, for sure. The finish is cool but does feel a little meh after a while. However, it does polish up to a more semigloss-kinda-satin with playing. This gives it some character down the road. Next to a regular high gloss and polish finish through, it does look and feel lacking in quality. It's amazing what a finish can do to perception. If you're one of the types that says wood doesn't matter in an electric guitar, then you can't say a Fender is better than a Squier, when we consider CNC machining and 3 piece bodies on each. At that point, save thousands and swap hardware and whatever else and you'll have the same guitar. Otherwise, the tone-wood matters. But, putting expensive components on, here's where I'm gonna really pick at the logic of "hardware that costs as much or more than the guitar it's going on. Serious question here; do they perform the same on a Fender or a Squier? Fender has the same issues as the Squier counterparts, as far as design, and the aftermarket high-end parts are made to perform well and improve in the original shortcomings, like that way that screws hold the unit to the guitar body, as an example. So you buy a Mastery Trem unit and put it on your American Fender, the functionality increases and the design flaws are sorted. The value should you sell the guitar with it, increases by $75-$125. The same peefomance and design flaws are sorted on the Squier. The same value increase amount is present as well. They are universal upgrades, respected and understood by most players. Worse case, take the unit off, out the stock back on and sell it separately or save it to go onto the Fender you replace the Squire with. Either way, it's never a bad idea to put top notch parts into a Squier. Never, no matter the cost. I swear to god to, I have some Jags and Jazzmasters that if I put a Fender decal on the headstock, like doing a refin, you'd tell me how great of a guitar it is in play and feel and sound. I have swapped to aftermarket pickups but that's to get a different vibe out of the guitars. Squier Classic Vibe, the earlier runs, used to put different era voiced pickups into the decade they were emulating, say 50's or 60's. That was pretty rad. Now they're all the same pickups. Sorta sucks when you have a 50's model in aesthetic but a 60's voices pickup. Seems that has been pushed to the Vintera line now, goofing pickups for models and decades. It's a great concept. After upgraded and properly set-up, I haven't found any real difference to my USA and Japanese Fenders. I just haven't. It's brought me to sell my American and start chasing guitars for feel and playability. As we always should. I have MIM, a TVL that's modded to the gills and plays better than any American I've come across. Not a cheap Mexican model though, it'll set you back over $1700 after tax. It's got Novak pups and Staytrem hardware, all rewired and Decoboom guard. A real sight to behold and a treat for the ears. I have Japanese Fenders and plenty of Squires too. Mike Adams did a review of a this guitars different color, his mustache been a better example for sure, with the frets. He preferred it over the $2500 AVRI II version he reviewed just before the Squier. The AVRI had worse QC issues. Seems quite common on American these days to just get junk.

That demo you're referring to at the end rubbed me the wrong way from the second it started - he was demoing a friends guitar that was lent to him after the friend had already played and had it for a bit. There is no way of knowing how that guitar actually arrived to the actual owner of the instrument. There's other things and motivations at play there but alas I'll go from the bottom to the top replying to this Bradford haha I 100% agree with you in terms of chasing feel and playability. It's why I cannot speak highly enough of the Deviser guitars which cost less used than the Vintera's or even some of the higher end MIJ. They are light years above just harder to come by and believe me, if you ever get the chance to play any of the Momose guitars you will fully understand what I'm talking about - some guitars are just undeniably great. With the CV series I'm a much bigger fan of their teles, swapping hardware on a tele is far more cost effective than replacing the really cheap hardware on a Jag or Jazzmaster because frankly put, it is super budget stuff. It functions but it's certainly not great quality. The pickups have also surprised me a few times with those! With elbow grease I agree you can absolutely get the pretty much any "decent" husk of a guitar ( these days those are far more accessible than they were even 20 years ago at these prices ). Honestly this line of guitars reminds of me of the PRS se line except with far worse fretwork ( which kind of makes sense considering who makes them ). Out of the box just kind of bland, mass produced for dirt cheap, make a lot of money for the companies who put their logos on the headstock, and just not stuff I really vibe with myself. The hardware point you made I don't think works here. The hardware on USA Fenders is 100% fine as is. A mastery bridge or vibrato is not needed so long as the person setting the guitar up knows what they are doing because the vintage hardware actually does work well - just not many people dive into the mechanics of the design itself. On these guitars the hardware is nowhere near the same standard quality of the USA guitars or the Japanese guitars - so you're already way behind the 8 ball so to speak. l really love how much thought you put into these responses and enjoy the conversations man, hope you have a great weekend.

@@AudiomoMusic I agree. Mostly. 😅 Totally. I'll say the Japanese hardware though, maybe it's quality metal but super thin. I've always replaced that stuff. An American Fender trem unit can be had for $65-$80 all day off Reverb. It's easy to find more exp naive sellers but if you look, they aren't hard to come by. I have an American trem unit for the CV Jag I'm redoing right now. I just got some Oxford nitro, their vintage formula, in Charcoal Frost Metallic. I'm prepping the body now, but the finish has already been removed. I put a set of hand made pups from a small boutique builders into my Japanese Jag so I might put those Japanese pickups into the CV im doing. They are quite thin but if I use a .022 cap it might offer a unique variation on the Jag and give me something different in my Jag collection. We will see. I know how to set them up correctly, the offsets, it's a skill for sure, but heavy handed people will always suffer with the rocking bridge. That's where the Mastery comes into play. The different material, stainless, (on Staytrem too) does allow for tighter tolerance and finer threads that stops the lowering of the posts over time. Though early examples of the Mastery suffered this too. But, more solid contact and less movement does equal a more stable guitar. However, for friction can be an added issue since the bridge isn't moving. It's all give and take. The metal can offer a different experience. Lord Fuzz an does a shootout with the different bridges for the offsets and it's pretty interesting. Definitely a difference in what they offer. It's not always right for everyone to swap but they are quality components and worth their value, as mentioned before, to most buyers. The vintage set-ups were made for music in a different era and for different playing styles than today's use. Many like lighter gauge strings, myself included, and this can pose problems for these that were designed with heavier gage strings. I like that Fender/Squier started angling the neck pockets to compensate for this, that 40th vintage edition you did here has that. My newest CV Jag has it. The 40th gold edition was the first of the Squier lines to get it. It's a great improvement. Really helps make the stock components work as they were intended for today's player. I can get mine set-up to play great with 9's and 10's, even the shorter scales of the Jag and the Mustang. It's what I prefer. One inherent issue with that, though, is the domes screw heads right in front of the pivot plate. Those are a known string breakage area as they can rub. Many people flip the screws. I have. It only leaves one central screw holding it together though. It's less than ideal. The Mastery trem unit addresses this by using counter sunk screw heads. Is it worth spending $200 to get counter sunk screws, nah, I don't think so, but it doesn't hurt and you aren't losing quality over it. It is a different material and does offer a slightly different feel, slightly, which really is subjective. Necessary to swap out the hardware on American, no, but many still do. Necessary to upgrade on the Squier, I believe absolutely. But $400 for a new guitar, $80 for an American trem, then another $30 for a right angle switchcraft, $20 for some pots and a cap, $5 is cloth pushback wire and you're way, way under the cost of an American Fender and it'll be spec'd about identically, and have a bone nut. I'm indifferent to the tuners. I haven't had an issue with them on the Squires, the vintage slotted, so I've rarely swapped those. Pickups, as you've stated, it's really touch and go with those. So personal and subjective, whose to say one set is truly better than another. 🤷 Nothing wrong with getting a higher end guitar, never, but it just seems the moniker of it has to be in order to be good. Like you stated, 20 years ago, yeah, but not today. For a few bucks you can turn it into a completely reliable and road ready guitar and have enough money left over to buy a killer amp, which will do more for your sound than an expensive guitar will. Ideally we have both and can then conquer the world. I appreciate your videos and your opinion. I'll enjoy my weekend as I work on guitars and put new walnut veneer on my stereo speakers (JBL's from the 90's and very nice.) I hope you enjoy yours too. 🤘🏻

Hey Jim! Great review and playing! I got one of these first of summer for $299 during Prime Day in Desert Sand. At that price, it's a good Jazzmaster, at $599, it's robbery! Mine also needed fret work, took me about an hour, and was good to go as a cheap, cool looking, good sounding guitar that was cheaper than half of my pedals, HA! I had seen problems from the 40th Anniversary Gold hardware series, that have problems with the hardware or the bridge sinking into the body. I have experienced none of that, but the hardware is different on the Vintage Series, so that may be the problem. My vibrato and bridge are good for this price range, smooth and no ping surprisingly, wish it did have a locker though, and I haven't noticed any sinking into the body, fingers crossed on that one! I'm a sucker for Desert Sand, and this satin finish looks good for this color. The Seafoam Green looks like a bad spray can finish. Side by side in stores, it's very noticeable, but it could be the gold anodized pickguard just clashing and my partiality for Desert Sand. Maybe a tortoise or different color pickguard could save the Seafoam Green, but that's just a bad Seafoam color and finish that I don't know. I was going to maybe swap out the electronics but I find the pickups sound surprisingly good and the electronics have held up so far, so that's a mod that is not needed for now. Mine also stays in tune really well but that's all in the care when you restring. I have a Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt by Vincent Van Trigt 62 Jazzmaster in Candy Apple Red Heavy Relic that is my baby and which all Jazzmasters are judged. This Squier, by no means, is ANYWHERE close to the Masterbuilt, let's don't kid ourselves. It's also 1/35th the cost! After a little neck work and setup, this is a good looking and sounding Jazzmaster at cheaper than Craigslist used pricing for new. Does this Jazzmaster get to stay, time will tell, but for now, I am very pleased with this $299 guitar! At the regular $599 price, it is a ripoff. Once again, Great review Jim! Appreciate your time and efforts for this channel! Have a Great Day! Greg

When I was in the market for a jazzmaster, I was looking between the Squier 40th edition in desert sand and an Am Pro II. In the end I picked the Squier because I didn't feel the Am Pro II was worth the price difference ($2k difference here in Canada). Also, I found that no matter which one I got I would probably want to change the bridge and vibrato anyway so why pay more for a guitar when I would end up still having to pay for the additional mods. That said I was surprised to find that the one I got has a pretty smooth vibrato considering many of the ones I have tried are stiff like you mentioned in the video. I also completely agree with you about your other points regarding the pickups and the neck. The guitar definitely needed a setup and some fret dressing out of the box. If I were looking today, I would probably take a serious look at the Vintera II model as it now has a rosewood fingerboard again.

What gauge strings are you using on it? Important with these types of guitars. 09 gauge strings normally do not work well on JM or Jag style trem systems even with a roller bridge and locking tuners. Then you have the neck shim issue with the action between the bridge and the nut to deal with. I read some where that they have addressed that issue with this guitar. I know for a fact that they did not address this issue with the CV series,
@alfredcakeburn1166
@alfredcakeburn1166 8 ай бұрын
@@monmixer Hi you can overcome this with a shim. I have a 0.5 in mine just a thin wooden shim from Amazon. It increases the neck angle meaning the bridge is a wee bit higher which in turn increases the downforce from the strings. You can run a set of 9.5-46s with no issue and I guess probably 9-42 if you wanted.

Doing a fret end job, leveling, polishing etc is easy and painless so that’s never a deal breaker for me. I find that I can set it up better than a tech anyway, only because I know what I want and like. Heck, when I purchase an airplane I always rebuild its engine because I don’t trust other mechanics with my life or my family members lives. Same with a house, I completely remodel those that I buy because most have horrible finish work and are full of cheap junky fixtures. It takes only a few hours of very easy labor to do a complete guitar set up, even if you take the time to tape off the entire fretboard, which I recommend. I bought one of these less expensive Squires used because I’ve been wanting to try out an offset guitar prior to buying something like my Ultra Tele. I think the neck on this guitar is pretty good and it took little work on my part to get it right, and I like the sound of the pickups. I sanded the back of the neck with 1000 grit because I don’t even like even a hint of glossiness. I recommend this guitar. Great video content too btw. Thanks

Great honest review Jim. I liked the sound of this guitar and for the money the pickups sound good. Nice playing BTW too! Someday maybe I'll own a Jazzmaster. (I have that Squier 70s CV one I was telling you about) earlier in the year I tried out a 40th anniversary Jazzmaster the white one with the gold pickguard and block inlays. I wanted that guitar so badly too, but when I tried one out at GC I just didn't connect with it (maybe it was a bad one?) And couldn't enjoy it ya know?

It happens sometimes, even with high end guitars. I had the 60th anniversary Jaguar that I desperately wanted to like, it was gorgeous, on paper looked perfect, but when I got it it felt like a total and complete dog of a guitar. I tried to make it work but ended up selling it pretty quick. Sometimes it just ain't meant to be!

I have this same model and 1960 Jazzmaster, this one sounds very good, and its resonant, 3,1 kg weight. The fretjob was not so great, but it just needed polishing. The trem spring is not very elastic, so thats needed to be chsnged. The pickups are good, lacks a bit of definition, and are similar inyonal range to jazzmasters from 1958-1960. Your review was good, and fair. What strings sre you using and whats your pickup height? Since the bridge is overwound for tipical jazzmaster bridge? For me personally, this is the best jazzmaster option in sub 1000$ range, investing in setup, better trem spring and pickups its still below vinteras and mex jazzies. Cheers!

Every Guitar needs a setup! I have exactly the same from the last batch at Thomann. Now they are indeed sold out. I removed the 009 strings , installed 011 after a good nut filing job, polished the frets, filed the fret edges and smoothen them, adjust the relief after installing the new strings. I had to sand the pivot plate straight to get the vibrato working as it should. It stays in tune after wild Vibrato abuse. Puisheen has good videos on youtube how to do that. Then I lowered the bridge pick-up a little. The overly present treble from it went away. This guitar, believe it or not plays better then my American Fender Jazzmaster with AVRI and staytrem bridge. Maybe it looks cheap, for me it doesn't, but the sounds are gorgeous , they need some TLC and then they are great. The pots and wiring will be swapped out for better ones eventually. For the money this is a no-brainer. €298...hahaha

A set up is one thing, this guitar got a full set up, new strings, fret polish, and trus rod adjustment. What this guitar and many others like it need are an actual fret level, which is well beyond just a regular "set up". The frets aren't even close to level on this guitar up and down the neck. I'm happy you like this better than your american jazzmaster, more power to you and I wish I had the same feeling. I guess I'm just spoiled by Fender Japan who actually care about the details and playability out of the box ( not to compare the squire to it, although at $600 new which is what these first sold for, a standard traditional 60's jazzmaster from Japan costing just over $900 new isn't exactly a gigantic price gap ).

@@AudiomoMusic , Mine didn't need a fret level. The frets were very rough so a polishing job did the trick. I never got my action this low with a USA instrument without buzzing.... I have very very expensive guitars and cheap guitars ( not so cheap as this one ) and after decades of playing I'm not very fond anymore of USA guitars in general . A lot of quality issues with Fender, Gibsons which shouldn't be there for that amount of money. In Europe USA instruments are way overpriced and as a luthier I can tell you that a lot of instruments that are on my bench are not worthed half the price the customer payed for it. Sharp fret edges, No polished frets, bad wiring , bad cut nut, laquer faulths, etc, are not issues you expect for a €1500-€2000 guitar in Europe. With a little bit of knowledge , you can get overseas instruments play exactly the same and after some hardware upgrades they are perfect workhouses for years to come. It took me 3 evenings to get this baby perfect, a lot of tweaking to get it exactly right. I wanted to know what a €300 instrument could be capable off. And that is a lot !!!

I briefly had the Desert Sand version of this -- I returned it for a dodgy pickup selector switch, but the fret work was good. Can't say if that was factory condition, though: it was a discounted demo model deal from Sweetwater. Besides them being out of stock upon return, I decided not to replace it because I just didn't connect with it. Maybe it was the neck, which was a little thick for my preferences, but still manageable. Or maybe it was the weirdness of the matte paint job. I even speculated that a maple fingerboard wasn't for me (first I'd owned!), but I subsequently picked up a used MIM Tele with a maple board that's just fine. I even speculated that maybe a Jazzmaster isn't for me, period, though I do like the whammy and the sound, particularly when in the hands of other people! :)

Back in the day you bought a cheap guitar and they were pretty crappy but they were really cheap, the price/value ratio was high.......Nowadays you buy the low end guitar from a big brand and they are still a bit crappy but the prices are insane for what you get....500$ for a Squier thats just ok? That's why I started building my own. On my second project now, which is a cross between a non reverse firebird, but with a fender scale length and bolt on neck. With everything it'll cost me around 800, not including the build time. I'm currently in the process of finishing in nitro, so it'll age nicely. I also love building things, so it's a win, on top of having a cool and personal guitar under 1000 dollars. Not cheaper than a squier, but definitely higher quality parts for a bit more money and time without paying too insane a price. I get that this option is not for everyone, but if you like to make things yourself, you could always start with a partscaster. There are a ton of options now a days

One more thing. You mentioned that the vibrato unit works stiff and this can be easily be solved with some 400 grid sandpaper and elbow grease . Disassemble the unit and take the pivot plate and make the edges straight. It takes about 5 minutes of elbow grease. You will notice that the material is a softer alloy then its USA counterpart. The pivot plate is not well finished and Its really soft. Assemble the unit and when the arm rattles in the collet bash the end of it with a hammer. When you did a good nut filing/polishing job the whole system stays in tune also with heavilly abuse of the vibrato, and is death quiet. When you're not satisfied after that yet you can always buy an aftermarket spring or give the spring tension screw a few turns. Always tune to pitch after adjustments. The unit will work the same as a AVRI unit without the locking function. If you need that function, I don't because with thicker strings I never break a string, there are aftermarked products that don't cost that much but will need the same attention. I read that a lot of people use 010 strings with mixed results in stabillity. That is because these kind Vibrato units/bridges were meant to be used with heavy gauge strings ( 012 and more). I hope this helps people out before considering an aftermarket unit. One thing I want to notice. Inspect your string tree on these Squiers with a magnifier. Mine had a very tiny bur which caused tuning issues which I couldn't adress at first and after a few passes with a small round file and proper lubrication (nut and string tree) this unit will divebomb and returns too pitch with no problems. Don't lubricate your bridge sadlles because you need the friction of your strings with the sadlles for the rockin motion of the bridge .

Maybe you got a dud or a second hand one I don't know. All the faulths on your instrument could be adressed for very little money, a screwdriver , sandpaper, hammer, and some elbow grease. Maybe people have to visit a luthier for getting their nut slots proper filed . I'm trying to help people with tips how to get more of their instruments because we are living in expensive times. What common sence offset stuf is for you and me isn't common sence for a aspirant jazzmaster/Jaguar buyer who want to get is feet wet in Jazz/Jag land. When they hear that a vibrato is stiff they maybe don't buy it. They don't know how to adress the issue in 5 minutes.

Sires can be just as hit or miss sadly. They just get finished off a little better before shipping out for the most part compared to Squiers that's for sure however I had one with fretwork so poor it made this seem like a Custom Shop - I've found the indonesian made guitars are a lottery and some people get luckier than others. The TVL is a fine guitar, you made a good choice with that one. I tend to prefer Japanese and US guitars for Jazzmasters and Jaguars, but the TVL is probably the best guitar Fender Mexico makes at the moment regardless of model.

These offset guitars need a very good setup. The bridge is good. After a bit of pivot plate filing the trem system works smooth and is death silence. The tuners on mine are good. People forget that a "normal" setup (Strat,Tele,Les Paul, etc ) isn't enough for Jaguars/Jazzmasters. The rocking bridge can only work if the neck is angled slightly so the bridge is able to rock freely with the correct break angle, the nut is filed and more important polished, the strings have to be at least 011 to get enough downside pressure on the bridge. These guitars were built for 012 strings or more. Nowadays people are using lighter strings so the whole system isn't that stable anymore causing all kinds of tuning issues. Aftermarket solutions solve that issue but then you lose the advantage of a rockin bridge.

I checked one out at GC last week. I didn't like it at all. I'm not a fan of satin finishes to begin with.

Satin on the neck can be a big plus depending on the guitar, but the specific way they did the satin finish on the body really doesn't do it for me

@@AudiomoMusic Yes, I like a satin neck, but not the body.

I just haven’t loved the 40th Anni series…just don’t jive to it. Same with the Vintera series - just not attaching to them! They are good guitars, just not attachment guitars for me.

I feel you on that. I can see why people do like these but they just don't really do anything for me and if I were to replace everything I'd want to replace I'm right at the price of a new Japanese Jazzmaster... and it's not even close at that point.
Do you really get what you pay for?
