A couple things I didn't mention or emphasize; this guitar plays great but like most guitars, especially less expensive ones, the nut needs some minor work. Also, I might have played a little too much with the fuzz! It was fun and I couldn't help myself.
@luismendo2 жыл бұрын
So did you have to file away some of the nut height? The nut always seems to come too high from factory; also in Fenders
@anotherheadlessdemo2 жыл бұрын
The height is actually fine which surprised me. I think a couple of slots need to be widened (probably the B and high E). I can hear that pinging sound when I tune the guitar and the B also has that sitar sound when played open. I'm assuming that's a nut slot problem.

Thanks for this video. I had been eying a Gretsch but instead in May 2023 went with a Fender Squire. Same model you're playing...only the finish I got was PURPLE SPARKLE ! Spending some time getting comfortable with my relatively new baritone (Squire Classic Vibe Telecaster FSR Custom baritone 27" scale) which of course came tuned in the standard BEADF#B tuning and Squire puts on .014-.068 gauge round wound strings....but since I have changed to flat wounds (which I prefer and have on all my electrics as they're more comfortable and there's no squeak moving along the fretboard) and gauges .015-.060. I have also discovered some very cool alternate tunings for baritone guitar such as : AEADF#B. or AEADEA (DADGAD equivalent) or GDADEA. or GDGCEA or ADGCEA. Locking tuners, would be the only thing I would change so I can take off the string tree...not necessary with locking tuners. I did take it to a luthier for a full set up.

I haven't been playing my baritone lately, but trying some different tunings sounds like a good idea. I've seen those purple sparkle Squiers - they look nice!

1:16 That is the regular standard baritone. You also can tune in A, then it is: A - D - G - C - E - A, compared to a guitar in D, which is: D - G - C - E - A - D As Judeworth938 said +- in other words: 14 - 68 is great for A baritone. Think about it, on a regular 10 set for guitar, the B-string is 13. So 14 is good for A.

Fender have to put a UKCA (UK conformity assessed) sticker on it if they intend to sell the product in the UK. A bit strange for one to appear outside the UK, I agree. Nice guitar and nice video, David.

@user-dv5yt9yc9x2 жыл бұрын
David, I want to share a little secret, for a full-fledged baritone sound, the speaker in the combo should start to return at a level of -3 dB from a frequency 1/3 octave lower. If a typical combo amp has a lower cutoff frequency of 110 Hz, then for a baritone it should be 110/3*2= 73 Hz. This is a fairly low frequency for an open speaker system, and I think FullBack Celestion speakers will handle those wavelengths in an open system. This is not the only solution, but as an example, it is good for understanding. A full baritone voice can be achieved by using a small home rehearsal bass combo. But this is only good for studio work.
@anotherheadlessdemo2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Couldn't agree more!
@anotherheadlessdemo2 жыл бұрын
Interesting about getting a full-fledged baritone sound. I could see how the studio would be the only place to set up an amp to be so specific. Oddly enough, when I record for KZfaq videos, I often use no amp at all. I'm not sure how that would figure into this equation.
@user-dv5yt9yc9x2 жыл бұрын
@@anotherheadlessdemo Dear David, I saw two logical themes in your post. 1. It would be nice to try recording a guitar from the speaker of some reference combo amp or guitar stack. 2. It would be interesting to hear the full-fledged sound of your baritone if the rules for radiation of long waves that correspond to the lower frequency range are observed. Each of these tasks will require costs. But if you solve them at the same time, then getting a pure scientific academic (and therefore repeatable) result may not work. Recording on a microphone through the speaker of a combo amplifier is a separate skill, there is a series of conflicting tasks. Building a cabinet that would reproduce a full-fledged baritone sound and at the same time be of reasonable size is another, no less difficult and original task. You have to pick one, in my opinion. If you choose to build a cabinet as a path, then there are two fundamental decisions left. Partial suppression of the resonant color of a closed cabinet or the use of special acoustic impedance panels. Or there is a third way - the use of speakers with a reduced quality factor, significantly less than 0.6, and then already apply solutions in the form of a Voight Tube, an acoustic labyrinth. But they have large dimensions and weight, and their second drawback is a significant comb color of the frequency response. And this is not very good for "musical principles" (the sound of individual notes will jump in volume). Personally, I am inclined to put an acoustic impedance panel with not specific non-guitar speakers, but of a similar design. They are used in temporary sound systems for small halls, and if they have a declared bandwidth above 3.5 kHz, then they will cover the entire required range with fairly linear PFC and frequency response, but 15" guitar speakers can also be used, they also exist, but this will lead to to bodies with a large front panel area, which is also inconvenient, so not quite guitar ones are better.
@anotherheadlessdemo2 жыл бұрын
I'm always amazed at your knowledge of the physics of sound reinforcement and recording! At some point I would like to try recording directly from the amp speaker using a mic. It's been a long time since I've done that. Even with cab simulators, there is something that is lost in the tonality and frequency ranges.

It’s clearly a great deal, however, it looks like you just might be checking into upgrading the neck pickup, pots and tuners. After making those additional investments you might have been better off getting a Danelectro baritone. Also, no knock against Melody Music but Sweetwater would have given you the additional option of picking exactly the guitar that you preferred(thinking about cosmetics and weight). However, you probably would not have gotten such a terrific price. Just my two cents; it’s all good. Anyway, great demo and review as always David!
@anotherheadlessdemo2 жыл бұрын
Melody Music had several of these available, and like Sweetwater, you could pick which one you wanted. After I ordered mine, I realized I had picked the heaviest one. Ugh. As far as upgrades go, I'm not planning on doing much to this. If something breaks, I'll replace it. This is such a novelty instrument, at least for me, and will only get use when it's appropriate. I had been looking at a Gretsch with a whammy bar, which would be cool, but out of my price range. The Sweetwater price for these was $459.

Got the same one. It also needed minor nut work. The way they strung the factory strings wasn't quite right, and my tuners were tight too. That went away with new strings. I also had to shim the neck. Fret work is very good though, and it's super fun to play now.

@anotherheadlessdemo2 жыл бұрын
Good question about how it fits into my surf tunes. There's a band in France called Moms I'd Like to Surf and the rhythm guitarist uses a baritone. When I play out, I play in a band that does mostly country, so it might fit with that pretty well. I've only played a baritone once prior to buying this one. I always liked the way they sounded. I bought this one never having played it or one like it. I play Teles quite a bit when playing out, so this seemed like a good idea, plus the price was right - $377. :)

Tried the black one today at guitar center and the G string was quieter than the rest of the strings. The guy there said it’s a common squirt telecaster problem. Do you agree?
@anotherheadlessdemo9 ай бұрын
I think it depends on how the nut was cut. With any of my guitars (Fender included), there's always one string that doesn' t sound as good as the others. It's almost always one of the wound strings. So I think it really depends on the individual guitar.
