Russ, excellent work. Knobster with KnobXP works great in XP11. However I can’t make it work without crashing in 11.5 beta 3 or 4. Loads the plug in, but crashes XP when trying to show the modeselect pop ups VR and 2D. Probably a Vulkan issue?

I would love to see pressing a button to enter a "select/change state mode" and a button/switch/knob in the cockpit turns green like selecting it with a vr controller (Maybe the last one you used). No fidly/nervous aiming with the mouse or the vr controller. Use left or right arrow on the keyboard, or the hat switch on the Yoke/joystick to select the next button/switch/knob - each highlighting green one after another just jumping to the next one up or down in the list of possible buttons/switches/knobs in the cockpit. Somewhat like you are doing in your list window only it's happening directly on the cockpit. Once the one you want to change is highlighted in green you use the knobster to change its state. Press left or right a few more times till the next knob/switch/button you want to change highlights green - change with the knobster and so on: if its a button or switch press the knobster, if its a knob turn the knobster. That would be way faster than using a table in a window. It's an idea I had a long time ago, but I'm no programmer so I'm not sure if possible. You might even maybe be able to use the up/down on the keyboard/hatswitch to jump up or down the layers of controls in the cockpit. No idea how the control list is set up in an aircraft cockpit file. Press the entry button again and you leave the "select/change State mode" and all Green highlighting turns of. Only an idea...

Great work Russ! I’m trying to get the .stl for this, but I’m kind of confused by”KnobXP KnobXP lets you use the Knobster within X-Plane 11, both in normal mode and VR mode. Info KnobXP is only compatible with the new Knobster (V2) and X-Plane 11. This means that it is not compatible with the old and the DIY Knobster.” What is the difference between the above mentioned versions? Does one version of the Knobster use the Nano, and another the Pro-micro? Thanks, Chas

Unfortunately the current KnobXP allows only two X-Plane Commands per knob( clockwise/counter clockwise) and one for the button push. I assume the airfoil labs has custom commands for each altimeter baro setting. The only workaround I can think of is to use XLUA to create a new set of Commands in X-Plane( baro up and baro down) that sets both cockpit baros and then reference that in KnobXP.

Great Video. Would it be possible to modify the plugin to highlight the knob on the instrument panel as you cycle through the menus using the knobster (I think you called it selection mode? the long press of the knobster)? This would allow you to keep your eyes on the instrument panel while cycling through the knobs rather than looking down at the list. Just a thought.

Jeffrey Shaffer not sure if that can be done that easily with XP11. Ideally, when hand tracking is available, the user should be able to touch the knob in VR just as we do on air manager panels, to highlight the dial and make it available using the Knobster.

John Panik I am not sure I understand. To remove the bezel in XP11 requires that you replace the 2D image for the bezel with a 1px by 1px transparent image. That’s it. No coding required. If you need more help I can give exact file names and locations but I am not near my computer now. I already have a knobster. Is there any possibility (eg with lua script) to make the command selection window easy to turn on and off. The open window is a drop of 1-3 FPS. They can be removed, but is sometimes helpful. Recalling a window from the top menu is very tedious in VR. I would love to be able to assign a command to open / close a Knobster command window (like I can do with scroll commands: next / previous). Thanks for any help. ;-)

No it only reacts to Ait Manager panels but there is a freeware program called KnobXP that allows knob control in 3-d cockpit or in VR. However, the shipping costs from the Netherlands increases the cost by about 50% which seems exorbitant, for such a small, lightweight item. Rotary encoders with w/pushbutton are harder to find in a quality priority preference. Therefore, I would conclude, that just to make it worth the time to mess with, the price is commensurate with that effort.

Hi Russ! I LOVE the innovative work you have done for the benefit of the entire flight sim community. It has enhanced, significantly, the level of immersion and enjoyment of flight simulation for many of us. With that being said, I have yet to see, as of this posting (8-29-21), a "real" way to take full advantage of VR combined with real world hardware. Your Knobster is the closest thing to date. What would be ideal? Is the ideal even possible? Personally, I believe what would be ideal is to be in VR, have a real world yoke, switches, and buttons, actually SEE your real hands represented virtually AND have your view with virtual hands "sync" with your real world hardware. I have seen this attempted to a certain degree in a few videos in DCS, but the "sync" isn't there. I.e., when you attempt to grab your hotas your virtual hands aren't actually on the hotas in your VR view. The person who finds a solution to this would be a millionaire within a year,....

Here is an example of a "real world" piece of hardware being synced with a VR view. If something akin to this could be implemented for the VR cockpit in the flight sim world, the possibilities would be astounding! The beginning of this video shows an example of the "game" syncing a virtual piano with a real piano AND VR hands with real world hands. Just food for thought I suppose... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdaoY89n0qq4k30.html

Ideally hand tracking with haptic feedback or as you say a physical cockpit that could. Be aligned with the VR view so your tracked hands could find what they are reaching for. But how about this. An AR (augmented reality) setup with a physical cockpit and enclosure and a curved and lighted green screen where a projection screen would be. Then composite the scenery view into the AR eye screens to replace the green screen areas. A real cockpit but with a quality 3D out the window view.
@brettsflyndad9945

@@rbarlow I find the whole topic absolutely fascinating for some reason. I would LOVE to see someone actually put this to the test. i.e., set up a panel with several real world items to exact scale (perhaps even just a yoke, throttle and the knobs for the 6pack). Utilize some form of accurate hand tracking (Glove, Leap Motion, or Quest 2) and record a video of testing the accuracy of "getting to the knobs". If the tester adjusts their yoke physically to "match", then adjusts their throttle to "match", then ensures the 6pack knobs are to exact scale as the VR view in relation to the yoke and throttle, then tests to see how far off (or not) they are. If this could be accomplished a panel could be built very inexpensively that would only include the knobs and switches. In a similar manner as the Altimeter Motives panel for the 172, but NOT as an overlay for a screen! I could even see panels being created for specific payware planes. If they are able to sell their current panels for only $375, I imagine a panel without the instrument cutouts and bezels would cost even less. AND, since it is NOT a screen overlay, Placement of your yoke through the panel could be in exact scale to the rest of your real world hardware.. Just some random thoughts.... apologies for the ramble and thank you for your prior response. :)

While I appreciate how people try to find solutions to make the VR flying more practical, I fail to see how this would make things any easier. Maybe Knobster could make an addon that could fit on top of your actual controllers?
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 4 жыл бұрын
Jonas Becsan I agree this is not the best solution. As a longtime real life pilot I hate using mouse/keyboard/controllers. Until we have hand tracking with virtual hands in VR no solution will be that great. Ideally it can all happen naturally with the hands. Personally I find trying to set the G530 with controllers infuriating.... two knobs and a button so close. Using Knobster is very intuitive and for me many times faster. I wish I knew more about the inner workings of XP11. I would like it if the user could just touch the knobs in VR and then use the Knobster. This is just a first try to get some added functionality. There is a SDK for Knobster available if anyone wants to make something better using the hardware. Thanks for you feedback.

Thanks for the video, the HTC Vive Pro Eye VR headset has Tobii eye-tracking integrated, so theoretically you could get rid of the VR controller, so if you could link the Knobster with the knob selected by the VR controller, in this case the user's eyes, it would be a mind-blowing experience as you could get one hand on the yoke and the other on the Knobster so you could be in control of the plane 100% of the time. In a helicopter, it could be even more dramatic if you can incorporate the Knobster to the collective.

Russ, do you know if the source code is available for the KnobXP plug-in for X-Plane? Running the current KnobXP plug-in in X-Plane 11.50 beta shows that it has a 2 to 5 fps (sometimes 10 fps) hit to X-Plane. I suspect the plugin is little more than a tight loop monitoring the Knobster and updating the currently selected control. If so, there is plenty of optimization that can be done to reduce the cost of running the plugin.

Freeman Pascal why don’t you contact the author Corjan at sim innovations. I have not tested it in XP11.50b but will. I know they have an SDK library for the Knobster Hardware on github in case others want to use it for other projects. See github.com/SimInnovations/libknobster It is a nice little piece of hardware and the library is a start for anyone who wants to use it even in non flight sim uses. If you want to optimize the code Corjan May be interested since KnobXP was an idea I had that he fairly quickly implemented

Russ, another too long video that fails to completely address the set up. KnobXP does not automatically start up the first time in VR. You must start a flight in 2D, open the KnobXP settings menu and then select "Enable VR". It will then appear as you describe in this video.
