Remember this game well. Other than the fact that WI beat SL easily in a one sided contest, SL bowlers tested the WI bats with short pitched stuff and many times the batsmen were hit on the face. Richardson and Gomes left the field retired hurt (spitting blood). Lloyd wore helmet. I don't remember him wear a helmet otherwise. This was his last series before retirement.

Imagine going out to open the batting against Marshall and Garner, knowing first-change will be Michael Holding. Daunting doesn't even begin to describe it. by the time Richards comes on, you're so far behind the number of runs you need that you have to try and tonk him and he ends up with cheap wickets.
@NishitShukla2 жыл бұрын
Just hyped up bowlers with hardly any variations in their repertoire. Today's bowlers have the same pace and bounce with myriad variations.

@@Wally-H Ya I never said Marshall was not a great bowler, I started watching cricket from 1984 when ENG toured India, have known Marshall from when he was at his peak. Any bowler like Marshall has to be great, someone who has 380 odd wickets in 80 tests at an avg of 20. What I am saying is, the 70s and 80s brought genuine pace into the world of cricket for the first time, batsmen without helmets were ill prepared and that is what seems to have added an aura to these bowlers. Today's bowlers are as fast and definitely have many more variations, the batsmen have also worked out how to face pace, which has made the work of bowlers difficult. That's what I meant. I remember Srikkanth hitting Marshall for a six on the very first ball in Sharjah. I remember Gavaskar hooking and pulling Marshall on way to his Bradman world record equalling century in Delhi. I know about Amarnath making 600 odd runs against Marshall in WI in 83. I saw Amarnath hooking and pulling Marshall to a century in 88 in India

No one take a noticed but this was the match where Westendians start politics in their team . Most of the player doesn't wanted to play under Clive Lloyd captaincy . You can see by their sloppy fielding and that include Richard , Marshal , and many others . Also when you see right after the runout Gus loggy turn his face around and ignore the Lloyd . At that time players said enough is enough for Lloyd to be captain but now it's time for the new captain which was Viv Richard and Richard was the culprit .

west indies was not mighty team. Without Roberts or Croft they failed . Garner alone cannot be match winner. India was the mighty team. As far we have Kapil Dev we were a mighty team. We have well balanced time and Kapil is a match winner at any time when he was in prime form,We have good allrounders like Kapil, Manoj Prabakar, Binny, Sharma , good leg spinner Sivarama Krishnan. M.Amaranath, Dilip Vengsarkar, Azarudin are all consisten. Gavaskar did captain well. ravi Shastri was Hero and unorthodox Srikant can tear apart any bowling.. It was 1983 winners with Venasarkar , chetan sharma and ravi shastri further strengthen team. Austrlia was learning team and under Border the team got rebuilt and after 1986 reliance cup Australia never look back and their domination continued Under Steve Waugh and Ponting capataincy.
@morgoth165 жыл бұрын
They destroyed India in India right after the '83 world cup without Croft. You forget Malcolm Marshall & Holding. Marshall is still considered by most who played against him as the best bowler they've ever faced, so i'm not sure if your statements had taken that into consideration. This team destroyed Australia in Australia in 84/85 then went on to smash England both home and away in the series that was remembered as the "Blackwash" series. That England team beat Australia in their backyard to win the ashes so it wasn't a weak English team either. All those series wins came without Roberts & Croft. So i'm not sure what you're basing that argument on. India had a great team, but if you ask anybody from that era they'll tell you the Windies were the ones to beat. Not true about Australia either, Australia lost to the Windies after their world cup win in test series both home and away. It took them another 9 years after that '86 WC victory to win a series against he WIndies in '95. The meteoric rise of the Aussies actually started after the '99 WC.
