Sri Lankan Gives Me His “Legal Drugs” At A Dutch Market 🇱🇰

I check out the 300 year old Dutch colonial market in Galle, Sri Lanka.
Whilst I’ve been travelling Sri Lanka, I’ve seen many people walking around chewing and spitting on some mysterious red thing. Today I got to try it for myself..
“Betel nut is LIKELY UNSAFE when taken long-term or in high doses. Some of the chemicals in betel nut have been associated with cancer. Other chemicals are poisonous. Eating 8-30 grams of betel nut can cause death.”

that substance is calcium hydroxide (lime stone cream) not corals. we used to paint our houses with those when i was a kid. it is not for the color or taste, limestone (cream) will react fast with tobacco and areca nut (betel nut) and makes you get high quickly. your head(inside) start to feel very warm when you chewing and keep them inside your jaw area... because chewing only tobacco doesn't get you very high like some people think.

That guy was trying to fleece you for a Red Pineapple. It is grown everywhere, not only in one part of the country, and tastes exactly the same. Quicklime or burnt lime will give you that distinctive red colour, and the same is used in cooking as well (especially tender jackfruit). Lovely content. Thanks.

Its not coral, it is ground limestone, calcium corbonate gives bright red color to the beetle mix.

14:00 Ok so bit correction. Those are not from corrals, it is limestones but Srilanka have lots of limestone mines. And obviously not recommend to try any of these drugs. But the point is those are not from corrals.

Hi mam, been following your travel for a while. And enjoying it from holland! Fun to see a dutch market there. The so called drugs is beatle nut. It just makes you a bit stoned / drousy. It's not strong but very bitter. Have fun man! ✌🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🌷

That red pineapple was young pineapple baby pineapples clour was red its nomal and we use them some local medical and ritual things.

The habit of eating Betel nut ( combinations of betel leaves, Areca nuts, lime and tobacco) is very common in most South Asian countries including Sri Lanka. It is a stimulant. It also gives you mouth and throat cancer. Chewing Betel nuts and spitting on to the floors has also created sanitary problems in those countries, especially during covid time. I really enjoyed your style of vlogging. Very clearly spoken and explained. You both appeared to be very down to earth travellers. Good luck to the rest of your journey, in Sri Lanka. I really enjoyed your videos in Laos where I have also traveled in 2018. Take care in Sri Lanka.

Hello Craig. How you doing? As per usual, this vidlog is full of information on the local history which is very interesting. Yes Sri Lanka had been occupied by several European powers like Portuguese, Dutch and the Brits. As a result, Ceylon is now a rich blend of culture and people. 😊👌👍👍

Wow. Wow. I got to order red pineapple soon. I just ordered 12 pounds Karela bitter gourds and I'm so happy. That's the soft long nob like vegetables.

It is not coral but lime. Lime is produced by heating corals. Coral is Calcium Carbonate and lime is Calcium Hydroxide.

That's burnt limestones. Nowadays they don't use corals for making them.

Hej !mate , always trying "scary experiences". As told by followers it's Betel .Dangerous if using in long time: destroying gums and teeth. Risk for mouth cancer after a while. By the way travel down to Galle , on the southwest corner of Sri Lanka: a genuine founded portugish town with fort, old style portugish houses, home for the Sti lamkan "navy". You found a tricky way for refusing buying all items: : " No money, my wife has the money".ah ah ah. Good trip and try nevertheless not to be for adventurous.

And the tsunami would have still wiped everything out coral or no coral. The drugs you tried are given to the old women in Vietnam , New Guinea, to relieve them of pain .
