I use both. NMVE for storing database files, virtual machine images and stuff like that, and spinning rust with lots of ARC and L2ARC cache for my Samba/NFS shares. Having said that, the ARC cache on FreeBSD is so good that it very rarely hits L2ARC and I am getting basically RAM disk speeds most of the time. It is about a 90% hit rate on the cache with 32GB of RAM. If you are playing, not editing videos, the sequential read on 4 hard drives is more than enough to saturate a 1GB network link and the IOPS of 50 or so, while a lot lower than NVME's 1m+, are more than good enough when you only need about 2 IOPS to stream a video.

first comment - planning on building my first server and this video released, what a coincidence! Thanks Chris love your channel. I've been trying to catch a stream. One of these days!

Both, most of my data is on rust, incidently on seagate mostly, vm and containers on a couple cheap Sata ssds, and another couple m.2 for ingress cache.

I use a consumer ssd for boot on my server and regular operations on my desktop. I rsync my ssds to a 6tb raid on my desktop, then occassionally rysnc that to a double mirror hdd exos 16tb zfs array on my server... then a couple times a year backup the most important stuff to bluray. However, I'm thinking of one day perhaps replacing the 6tb raid mirror on the desktop with a mirror of micron pro nvme drives while still having the hdd zfs array on the server (to get the rust off the desktop). My data needs aren't that huge though.

Backblaze gets a good amount of name recognition just from sharing their reliability data that gets quoted by some influencers and 'news' outlets. It's primarily how I learned of them. I didn't realize they were an inexpensive option though, I kind of assumed because they were THE NAME everyone talked about for storage reliability data they were also geared towards enterprise and thus the more expensive option.

I have a RAIDZ-6 with 8 Seagate Exos X 18TB. 4 of those died within 2 years, currently 2 are with the vendor for RMA. Sweating bullets. The savings in cost/TB got eaten by the headaches of RMA and constantly scrubbing/resilvering.

I'm into the tech industry for years now, but at home I'm a normie. I don't have a home server. I have a backup drive and it's HDD - for longevity and reliance. So - for Backup and anything important - HDD. For anything else, that you don't care so much - movies, media, etc. - SSDs (performance is not to be ignored, also the lack of noise).

01:18 🖥 Traditional hard drives are preferred over SSDs for home servers due to their economic value and longer life expectancy. 03:37 🔄 Hybrid RAID setup with spinning platter hard drives and a hot spare is recommended for over 100 terabytes of storage for optimal performance and data protection. 06:05 ☁ For cloud-based disaster recovery, Backblaze is highly recommended for its affordability, reliable servers, and efficient customer service. 09:02 💾 Use SSDs for workstations with smaller storage needs (1-2 terabytes), while traditional hard drives are suitable for larger storage requirements. 12:42 🚀 Backblaze stands out for Disaster Recovery, offering API access and compatibility with various systems, making it a preferred choice in the business community.

Does backblaze work like other cloud storage? Like what's the catch? Is it emergency only access or can you use a website and mobile app to access on the go?

I guess I would store something that requires fast storage locally anyway. 20TB HDDs on the other hand are quite sexy.

Just checked some local SSD vs HDD prices, cheapest 4TB SSD is still almost 50% greater cost than a CMR 4TB HDD so not sure why you would suggest SSD if your storage needs are less than 20TB. Am I missing something?

Another HDD'er. I can see maybe both in the future but cost just don't see it yet.
