Did you end up doing it? I maxed out the memory to 8gb full mhz (I think it was 800mhz). Did the ssd make a huge difference? I've heard they do and can make an old machine exponentially faster especially if you're running a 5400rpm hard drive.

Excellent video tutorial! I was going to buy a new laptop but seeing this video, I've decided to simply upgrade to an SSD, more RAM & clean install as you've done here. If you maintain this type of concise, step by step method, you can only reap success and subscriptions. Good luck and enjoy!

I was hoping to upgrade my old toshiba satellite with a ssd, but I wanted to keep the HDD as well as shortage and use the SSD as the boot drive with my OS and and some select files, like games, as my toshiba has an AMD gpu in it as well. There is a bit more space where my HDD is than in your machine. I have the s855d model. I'm not exactly sure how to do it though, I would probably get an m.2 SSD and need an adapter piece to make it work and than use RAID or something. I just upgraded the RAM which was as simple as it gets. Using a Lenovo Legion 5 right now but I like the Toshiba as my back up. Going to take some work to figure it out, although might be easier since tech has changed a lot since you made this video, still, going to be a project. Thanks for the video nonetheless, well done.

I thought it was going to be a big difference, but no. Now I'm missing a switch to a ssd disk. I have problems with the latest drivers for win 10. Only those 2015 work. I have an older l300-29d that i have upgraded from a 2Ghz pentium to 2.8Ghz core 2 cpu 256gb ssd + 1tb hdd and a fhd screen. 100% worthwhile upgrading rather than replacing the whole machine most of the parts were either free/ cheap of stuff i had around from other dead/upgraded systems, an upgraded older laptop will often be faster than a budget new gen laptop at the cost of battery life and weight. You can pick up the older satellite range for as little as £10 a cpu + ssd upgrade will make you forget they are 10+ years old, replace the odd with a hdd caddy and you have massive storage potential, you can keep the odd in a cheap external enclosure if you still need it occasionally. Full hd panel replacement is possible with the older l300 15.4" toshiba laptops (core 2 era), you do need to upgrade to a dual channel screen cable from a model with higher resolution the 1980x1200 panel I used was from a hp elitebook. If you have a model with gma 4500 mhd (g45/47 chipset) you can upgrade to 8gb ram and 1066mhz cpu x9100 is not worth the extra over t9900 in my opinion, both clock at 3.06Ghz the x9100 has an unlocked multiplier and higher core voltage to support overclocking. I have not heard of anyone installing a q9000 (6M cache) q9100 or qx9300 (12M cache) to one of these older machines but an unlocked core 2 quad would be great. Windows 10 can be activated with windows 7-8 product keys during first installation in 2020 even on machines that never participated in the Free Upgrade offer at the time. Windows 8 product keys can be read from the bios area using various software available online. Once activated you have a digital licence and will not have to re enter the product key on following re installations (just click "I do not have a product key" during installation and the digital licence will be applied when you connect to the internet)

I know the video is old but thanks for the video ^^ I still have my toshiba satellite L750-12N since 2012 ahah I used it as my only computer since then and I was able to play any game on this too till 2 or 3 years ago, now it starting to suffer of slowness and is ofcourse no more good enough for gaming (especially considering it came with a 4Gb of Ram). Got it for 550 euro 6 years ago and it still perform better than any laptop under 400 euro XD I am going to replace the HDD with a SSD and perhaps add 4 Gb, do you think it could be worth it?
@texelhardware4234
@texelhardware4234 6 жыл бұрын
It depends what you plan to use it for. Adding ram will only help marginally with games. The biggest problem is that these machines have no dedicated GPU of ANY kind... Plus the integrated graphics are on a chip that is from the Sandy Bridge era, and I think the term ERA is appropriate here. As a gaming machine, I would not waste any money or time trying to get this one up to specs for that mission. If you need a web browsing and streaming machine, *Chrome eats ram like crazy* the upgrade makes sense. If the focus is about gaming, there are some modern 1050Ti equipped laptops out there with 2GB of VRAM well below 1000 USD. I've seen them as low as 700. Something like that will be money way better spent. Hope that helps.
@Coroshia

hey thx for the answer, I actually upgraded the Ram for the ridiculus price of 25 euro (2X4 Gb RAM) and still not sure if to purchase an SSD or not too, actually my Laptop does have a dedicated GPU not quite powerfull as the one you mansioned of course, it is Nvidia GTX 525M with 2 Gb of dedicated memory, I saw some good gaming laptop too for around the price you're talking about but right now I am kind out of budget for other reason so I was just trying to figure out how to make my old machine better. Ram upgrade only for the ridiculouse price was definitly worth it, I am able to run The Witcher 2 at 1080 with low spec or mid spec at a bit lower definition, For now I don't see much the utility for the SSD upgrade, perhaps if I get a special offer for an SSD I may reconsider it
@texelhardware4234
@texelhardware4234 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, beyond faster load times, once the game is loaded into system memory and as long as the needed active files for the game fit within the amount of ram available, the performance will be practically identical. There is a benefit though of quicker system response time overall with an SSD that you may find worth the money in your case. Windows often executes random read/write operations when it references new items and system files that 'fault' meaning that the machine has to load them from the main system storage instead of referencing them within system cached data on the active ram. The massive increase in speed of read/write I/O operations of an SSD I feel can be worth it in your case since a new system is out of budget. I'd recommend getting the largest SSD capacity you can afford. You just have to be the judge of whether or not your system is responding adequately fast enough as it is or not. The older the drive is, and the more full it becomes, the slower its performance will become and the likelyhood of failure also increases with age drastically after 3 years. SSD's are not subject to these drawbacks and should perform the same level regardless of capacity usage levels, and age as long as the NAND flash chips are still within their useful service life themselves... although it is important to remember the very rare and remote chance that these can physically fail as well. I do have a video about a program syncback free that explains how you can set up an automated data archive. Also just keep in mind this is only a recommendation since a full new system is not an option. If you have an MXM format PCIE GPU, its not worth trying to upgrade. In theory you could upgrade it and there will be probably a lot of options that are floating around the open market on ebay ect... however such a project involves hunting a compatible heatsink block and custom modifying/rebonding and metalworking custom heatpipes to your existing available heatsink fins, and HOPING it will be enough thermal transfer capacity. It is a nightmare that should be avoided.

I have a Satellite C55D-B5203. Can I replace the HDD with an SSD in it?
@texelhardware4234
@texelhardware4234 6 жыл бұрын
That should have a removable hard drive. Therefore you can follow the steps to replace/upgrade it to an SSD of course. I recommend to familiarize yourself with the deconstruction process or removable access panels before you begin. so you can access your hard drive. The reference materials I found from a simple google search on your question show you can also upgrade your ram if you like. (16gb is the max I saw others confirmed working) The other refurbishments I would say are worth the time to do, are to clean the fans/heatsinks and to re-apply thermal compound to the CPU. It appears the CPU is non-removable BGA 769 Socket type *Soldered in on a ballgrid array* but you should be able to give it some fresh paste. Should perform better than new after all that.

I upgrade my l755 from window 7 to windows 10 the product key will still work for it?
@texelhardware4234
@texelhardware4234 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on whether Microsoft deems the key has an entitlement to an upgrade or not to windows 10... The free upgrade to windows 10 "officially" ended in July 2016, although some people have had luck I've heard by validating their old windows 7 or 8.1 product keys after that date. If you have ever validated your key prior to that date, it will always be valid for either a reinstallation of the original 7 or 8.1, in addition to the new windows 10. The MCT *Media Creation Tool* IS NOT A FREE LICENCE. It still requires you to either purchase a valid windows 10 product key, or have one that you already own. The purpose of the video is not about upgrading licenses however, since that opportunity according to Microsoft itself has long since come and gone. The point of the video is showing how easily it can be installed and how to do it on a blank SSD. If you can upgrade, I recommend trying it since it will definitely save you money if you can though. Hope that helps.

@texelhardware4234
@texelhardware4234 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sunil Kumar, No, you do not have to buy a new copy of windows. Your computer should have come with a recovery disk set that has windows 7 on it, or you have to manually create a recovery media for the PC. If all else fails, you can get a copy of windows 7 from the microsoft website, then use your license key that is on the sticker on your machine and it should authenticate without any problems. Download windows 7 from Microsoft here. www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 CLONING is a process that copies your current hard drive and puts an exact copy of the entire drive onto the newer one. While this method could potentially save a little bit of time, I personally woud not recommend it. A clean fresh installation of the operating system is the best way to go so that you start over with your programs and can begin by reinstalling only what you really need to do your work. Over the years systems become overcluttered with additional programs, and having only what you need on the machine will help to ensure that system resources are properly allocated to the tasks you are trying to do. Programs such as Easeus Partition Master Home Edition, and Macrium Reflect and many others are capable of doing disk cloning if you still want to do that. Just keep in mind, that if your system is currently not well optimized for startup, has too many programs you no loger use or don't want, or if your system is plagued with malware or spyware, then ALL of those problems will be copied to your new drive as well. Hopefully this will help you and many others make the best decision between cloning, and fresh installation of windows.

@texelhardware4234
@texelhardware4234 7 жыл бұрын
You should be able to download the ISO or a bootable usb media tool from the Microsoft website, and burn it to a disk or USB drive. The activation happens on the computer itself, NOT the Microsoft website. Keep in mind if your computer hardware requires proprietary drivers, that is drivers that are not included in the basic default drivers set in the windows 7 OS, you should be able to get those through a support download page from the manufacturer. Hopefully this can point you in the right directions.

@texelhardware4234
@texelhardware4234 5 жыл бұрын
Any SSD should have worked, SanDisk is usually a good brand. It is unfortunate your situation. Most likely you bought a returned product. The last customer probably deleted the MBR partition volume when they deleted the partition they had originally set up. More than likely if you connected the drive to a computer pre-loaded with a software like EaseUs Partition Master Home Edition (free), or Macrium Reflect (Also free), you can find the drive as an 'unformatted volume' despite the fact that windows explorer does not see it at all. In either of these softwares you have to go through their process to set up a new partition. This will rebuild the MBR volume, and thus, allow the new created partition to be available for use in windows and on other devices (compatible with the chosen file system of course.) Now as for my recommendation, go with a Toshiba SSD, as they are my personal favorite for 2.5" Sata III SSDs. I also recommend Patriot Blast/Ignite/spark/burst. These types of drives all perform the same, and as an end user, they will all perform at the same 550 MB/sec. I recommend buying at the store if you can in person to save on shipping and waiting time, but online make sure you buy from reputable vendors. Amazon is getting a bit contaminated in the supply chain with people reselling returned / defective or sometimes outright fake products at times from shady sellers. Be sure to check the vendor carefully. Best of luck....

Any 2.5 inch SATA III ssd will work. I recommend using a reputable brand such as Samsung, Western Digital, Patriot, Toshiba, Western Digital, PNY, ADATA. I recommend no smaller than 250GB capacity in 2021 and beyond. Reason being is Windows 10 is getting bigger than it used to be and having a 120gb drive will probably only give you 80 gigs to work with which is not enough for most people anymore.

Never Clone a drive there is really never a need to. I recommend always doing a fresh install to a new drive. Its a chance to start fresh with a clean system to put on only the programs you need right now. Best not to bog down your system with all those utilities you added 3 years ago and never use anymore that still probably run in the background etc.... I hope that helps you see why. It is easy all you need is a USB drive 16gb or bigger which is literally 5 USD nowadays... It is easy. Good luck.

Yes it is definitely quite a bit faster. Boot time is less than half of what it used to be, it waits for me during boot mostly, its faster than i can enter the password. System stability is also improved from what I can tell also, since the machine can read/write data so much faster than it previously could. The stability advantages translate into smoother loading with no system hangs, and rapid transition between several/many programs is instant as well. (Before it would begin to lag considerably with more than 4 programs out at a time due to many programs accessing the drive simultaneously). Just realize that it is not going to make much of a difference for things like games, beyond their load times. The performance gains are the most valued if your current programs over-saturate your hard drive read/write speed bandwidth. Like I said before that is where it shines. You can copy large files, while reading a movie stored on your machine, and sync data with a backup drive all simultaneously for example without any significant transfer speed throttling. Even if you only do one of those things at a time, you will see quite a big speed improvement.

I replaced the CPU with a fast, high-end quad core i7-2760QM (4C/8T, was $75 off eBay), and put 16 GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-12800 (PC3-1600) 9-9-9-24 RAM in it, and a PNY CS1311 240GB SSD in it. Installed Windows 10 Home x64. I also got an aftermarket 130W power brick for it at Microcenter. I use this beast for cancer gene mapping research (World Community Grid/BOINC- help save lives!), it's on 24/7/365 (temps stay in the mid-60s - 70°C, rarely hits 80°C & sits on a CoolerMaster laptop cooler. I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, "straight line method" - I *never* do the spread method with AS5.). I have this laptop on a pure sinewave CyberPower UPS, and this whole rig runs like a scalded weasel. 100% reliable...never crashes. It gives my Asus laptop that came with an i7-4700MQ CPU a run for the money, and that machine is 2 years newer. Honestly, I've probably extended the life of this computer by another 4 years.

Trev0r98 I have the same laptop, do you think it's worth doing these upgrades instead of getting a new one?

As always, the answer is: "it depends". For me, yes...it was well worth it. An equivalent new laptop today (January 2018), with a 240GB SSD, along with 16 GB of reasonably fast RAM (CL9), and a fast i7 quad core CPU with HTT (4C/8T) would probably run around $900 at a Microcenter store (and that's without a discrete nVidia GPU, btw). If you're reasonably handy with fine tools, thermal paste, and willing to put in the time, you could do these upgrades in 2 hours. It's really a labor of love. I, for one, really enjoy doing these kinds of upgrades...the results are well worth it. The CPU, memory and SSD would set you back about $350 total - $130 for the i7-2760QM CPU off eBay (and I only go with 5 star reputation sellers only!), the RAM around $130, and the SSD around $75. I think it's well worth it. For example, here's how my hot-rodded, 7 year old Toshiba L755 does against a laptop with an i7-2920XM CPU, in Geekbench 4.2: tinyurl.com/yaaa7vy2 My L755 is on the right. And against an Asus laptop with i7-4700HQ CPU: tinyurl.com/y9cqqewg my Toshiba L755 with the i7-2760QM CPU is on the left side. (elementary OS/Loki is a Linux distro) Only real issue is the BIOS. My chipset & BIOS might be totally different from yours. I found that the older Insyde 3.40 BIOS works best with my laptop. HM65 chipset.

how do you install the os on an Empty new SSD??, don't you supposed to do the installation before Replacing the Hard Drive To the SSD???????????????

If you plan to do CLONING then yes, you would clone the drive before installing it (Raw) into the computer. However, the process of installing a fresh copy of windows is as shown in the video. You can put a blank SSD in the computer and run the steps provided, and it will install windows just fine.

The windows key will be on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop somewhere or on the side/back of your desktop. I can not help it if it was put some other strange place. Some systems also have the key registered into the bios on the motherboard, and such systems do not have a visible sticker at all. In the latter case, a reinstallation will automatically be activated, but that is a less common thing to see from my experience. There are some system tools you can download also that can reveal what the current windows version and key is that you are using right now. (Before you do a reformat and reinstallation.)

You probably don't have Windows installed on the SSD. Check out a free Windows install with a genuine product key and just stick with all steps necessary to fix your issue. A clean formatted ssd is what you need to have to install your version of windows.
