Yeah about the frog being “more sensitive”, the dude in this video was completely right, it isn’t more sensitive, but I think a lot of barns and trainers stress to tell their students to not pick the frog or mistake it for mud or rocks.
@FluffyDragonDrawing

That makes a lot of sense actually, i do have a question though? I heard that the frog is meant to help the horse 'feel' the ground; how would it do that without there being some sensitivity?
@avillee

@@FluffyDragonDrawing I’m not a hoof expert, but talking to my farrier, I believe that it’s like an absorber for shock and overall padding for the nerves underneath it + the keratin in the hoof itself!

I was told to just be more careful there because it's softer, so when you use a pick you could put holes/ridges in there where rocks can get stuck. So I usually just used the bristly side of the pick to clean there.
@Shaixira
@Shaixira 2 жыл бұрын
I realise my comment is a bit late, but I imagine people think of the frog as something similar to the big pad on dogs and cats, which *is* sensitive. I have a percheron with ring bone in both front legs he's to difficult for farrier to trim his hoofs . So I learned on my own to trim his hoofs . I also use a rotary hoof knife used mostly for cattle but it makes it easier for to trim the hoofs because I have about a 20 second window to trim some before my horse puts his foot down because he can't stand on 3 legs or he will fall on top me so I have to be fast in my trimming. My horse is 25yrs old . Be safe everyone 👍

But not as gross that's for sure. It became satisfying so quickly! Maybe that is accurate of the people who agree with this comment, to have more than average empathy as well. Which requires a level of emotional intelligence. This could explain why it's described as a comparably "satisfying" video. Whether it be pimples, ASMR, or elderly horseshoe mani-pedi, it's intriguing! I can't really think of other examples right now. I hope I make some sense lol

About 59 years ago I had a horse that had ringbone in her front feet. She had been used as a parade horse. She stumbled then rolled over on my right leg. That's when we found out we needed to keep her feet trimmed more often. Oh yeah, she was a Tennessee Walker.

Hi. Writing message from Japan. I watch tons of horse related KZfaq channels to self educate myself. I do not come from a horsy background but I started riding horses about an decade ago and now adore this creature. Figured out that the best way to treat them right is to know about them. Reading and watching horse anatomy and behaviours helps me understand more deeply. Your channel is awesome. Even though English is not my mother tongue, I do find your channel interesting and easy to comprehend. Technical terms are the hardest but eager to know more. Looking forward to see you more in this channel. Stay safe and stay healty.

@@waleah4855 I'm not that person you were asking but I'm not sure if they answered it. I think horses do appreciate it because if something is hurting them hopefully the farrier can help if it is hoof related. Also horses hooves are like our fingernails and toenails. They need to get trimmed every one in a while and sometimes things can happen to them and they need to get fixed. For example a hangnail. Or an ingrown toenail. Idk. Those are the things I think of. I hope this made sense. It is a little difficult to write out.

Also because usually people keep their horses in fields with soft grass, let them graze. Any horse owner worth their salt will give their horse enough room, but they don't keep them on rough unforgiving terrain. Wild horses walk over a lot of rocks and stuff. Also they break their legs and die of diseases all the time, but domesticated horses have owners who take care of them.

I'm glad to see that your sister-in-law went and helped out two horses that needed a new home. People don't realize there or rescue groups for almost any animal out there. Even at your local animal shelter they sometimes have some odd animals other than dogs and cats and bunnies. A new trend is roosters and chickens. For whatever reason people are going out buying them and realize you have to feed and water and house them instead of doing the work they turned them over to the shelter. It's good to see someone who knows what they're doing working with the horses. I enjoyed watching your videos I look forward to seeing more.

Regarding the myth that frogs are sensitive- when I first started riding (about 30 years ago) and was being taught how to care for a horse prior to tacking up, I was told, repeatedly and loudly, "NEVER TOUCH THE FROG! IT'S SO SENSITIVE THAT IF YOU TOUCH IT YOU WILL MAKE YOUR HORSE LAME!!!" I'm not joking or exaggerating. I was screamed at and barred from riding that day when cleaning a horse's hoof and the pick grazed the frog. The whole thing didn't make sense to me so I researched it (which involved going to a LIBRARY and reading BOOKS) talked to a farrier and got the correct information. So, I think the myth keeps getting handed down, so to speak, when misinformed kids grow up and become misinformed trainers. No one questions it or thinks "I'll talk to the farrier about it".
