Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) Side Effects (& Why They Occur) | Paroxetine, Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) are medications used to treat disorders of depression, anxiety and fibromyalgia. These medications inhibit the reuptake of serotonin back into the presynaptic neuron, leading to increased levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. SSRIs can lead to particular side effects, from their normal use and may also cause antidepressant discontinuation syndrome and serotonin syndrome. In this lesson, we discuss these side effects along with the symptoms of antidepressant discontinuation syndrome and serotonin syndrome.

i am 42, severe depression since i was 10. Never took any medication. Now i lost my libido completely. Dont even get erections anymore. And i workout everyday, sleep better than ever and eat very clean and healthy! I think its bc i am so unhappy and depressed. So now i figure, it cant get any worse so i might as well try antidepressants. It might help my libido and lack of happiness. Made my first appointment to see a Psychiatrist. Which drug should i try first? Lexipro? wellbutrin? I have heard good things from both men and women in my depression group about antidepressants. They said it helps level you out. Never get too low. But reading these negative comments makes me very hesitant to start taking drugs for the first time in my life.

I got one creepy one when I tried to stop taking Sertraline (because I thought I didn't need it anymore. Boy was I wrong.) I had moments when reality felt different. Like everything looked the same but it didn't feel the same. It worsened if I tried something new or watched something new. One of the most annoying discontinuation effects from Sertraline for me is the brain zaps, which sadly isn't mentioned in this video, but it's fairly common as far as i've read. It's like when you're a kid and put your tongue in a 3v battery, but instead of the tongue, you feel the zap in the brain, every couple of minutes and depending on what you're doing. For me it happens always the following day after I forget to take my medication or when I don't have it available for the day.

the SWEATING! omg i'm so glad that that's an acknowledged side effect! mine is so bad. from even just a little bit of exertion, i just end up with sweat dripping down my face. my scalp and hair will get soaked. and most annoyingly, if i go from a cold temperature to a warm tempurature (say, going inside a heated place after being outside in the wintertime) i get sweaty. if i go into an air conditioned building after being outside in the summer heat and just drenched in sweat, it takes like 30 minutes to stop sweating. i'll get sweaty just from getting really passionate and heated about something (like talking about something i like, or playing an intense video game/watching an intense movie). strangers will ask if i'm alright because i just look clammy all the time. it's so embarrassing. i take glycopyrrolate (seriously recommend it if you have a similar issue! or if you're just naturally a sweaty person without meds lol) and it helps signifigantly but but i'm still the sweatiest person i know even when i'm on it. i feel so gross lol but i've just kind of accepted it cuz i'm never gonna stop taking my prozac. if i stopped i'd be completely disabled by my panic attacks, which would on randomly with no trigger and would happen every day (even at night sometimes!). now they only happen once a month, and i wouldn't even call them panic attacks, they're just random uncomfortable bouts of anxiety that i can shrug off with some deep breaths and a klonopin.

I've been on fluoxetine for more than 20 years and within the last 5 years my dosage was increase to 80 mg I'm not sure if that's a lot or not. I ran out of my medication and I was without it for 3 days and could not understand why I felt the way I did and everyone around me notices a difference in me. They said I was unbearable. I found problems with everything oh, there was just no pleasing me. The funny thing is I thought I was okay. I have experienced a lot of those symptoms and I just figured I'm just getting old, so thank you for this information I have a lot that I need to talk with my doctor about. God bless you always.

I have been on fluoxetine, Buspirone, and clonazepam for over 10 years now. I’m currently 53, and frankly I am just fed up with feeling like a robot or a zombie, totally in capable of feeling any emotion at all except anger, not to mention bringing a whole new definition to the word insomnia, I can stay awake for over three days in a row and no matter how exhausted I am I cannot fall asleep because I can’t shut my brain off, it has totally killed my libido, gives me tremors in the hands and legs, plus several other side effects that have all been proven to be direct side effects from my SSRI’s. The anger stems from the fact that I feel so miserable because I can’t feel anything else, that, and because my health is horrible. Thanks to stage for Crohn’s disease diagnosed when I was 20, and then after my large intestine ruptured at 21 they found intestinal cancer growing on the outside of my colon, I have had 37 operations that has removed 95% of my G.I. tract, so everything I take orally never gets absorbed properly. My fluoxetine is in liquid form, but I couldn’t get the other two in liquid form, so all the advice given to normal patients never seem to work for me because my absorption rates are completely different from anybody else. My doctor said my case is so rare it represents only 0.01% of all gastrointestinal patients that have some form of IBD. Sorry for the long winded description, but there’s no other way to see it easily, my question for you is, do you have any idea how I can get off of my meds given my situation without a disastrous outcome, as my doctor and psychiatrist have predicted. At the moment I am completely in capable of feeling any type of joy or happiness, I literally cannot remember the last time I felt happy, and I would give literally anything to be able to feel that again. My days are filled with absolute misery and loneliness as I was forced to go on permanent disability at the age of 46 because of my physical health. I am absolutely convinced and positive that if I can get off these medication‘s, I know I will feel much much better, even though I may still have some of the symptoms of anxiety and depression, I am now studying from my psychiatrist cognitive behavioural therapy aka, CBT. it’s my hope that CBT will allow me to get off these medications and give me the tools I need so I can live my life without having to resort to these medications that are absolutely destroying my life. At first the SSRI’s were of great help, as I was incredibly suicidal, I had given up all hope on life and I didn’t want to live anymore, but that was over 10 years ago, I desperately want to live, but I also desperately want to feel human again, and not the robot that I have become thanks for these medications. So that’s my situation, again my apologies for the long explanation, but I’m absolutely desperate for all the help I can get, if anyone out there has advice I can use I beg you please let me know, because I can’t keep going on like this, I could be in a room filled with thousands of people including friends and family, and still feel totally alone because I cannot feel any joy or love whatsoever, that’s not who or what I am. Before the medication, even though I was suffering from severe anxiety and depression, I could still smile, I could still feel joy, and the cliché that you don’t know what you missing till it’s gone is absolutely 100% accurate. I would rather go back to the way I was before the medication and used my CBT training instead of relying on medication. Please help me if you can, thank you for listening, and thank you for posting this video, cheers from Toronto!

TJ in Toronto--I feel for you. I'm no dr., but I would find a dr. who will listen to you. Emotional health is so important for healing. Maybe you can wean yourself slowly off of one med at a time, or change meds til you get some part of yourself back or start to see some semblance of yourself beginning to return. Don't go cold turkey or you will have more problems. Talk to your dr. about lowering your dosage and tapering. Tell him or her what you're feeling and what you want to feel again. It may take time, but make a goal and reach for it. Don't give up. May the Lord bless you and walk with you through it all. 🙏 and give you the answers you need to better your life and best choices for your treatment. Where there's a will there's a way. The only side effect I've ever had on Citalopram and various other SSRIs is a bit of numbness where you don't want it. It either takes longer to get there or it's just not as intense. When I know I'll get intimate with a guy I'll skip a dose. Makes a huge difference. In general the intensity increases (almost to normal) when I increase the time frames between having fun. When something really excites me mentally, it's a lot better as well... guess because dopamine increases.

It finally dawned on me that the tingling was happening when I started back on, but I get terribly depressed every fall so I dare not stop taking it. I changed to Ciprolex but the tingling is still there. It's not painful (you wrote that your arms felt like they were burning) but rather more like mild, but constant little electric shocks. Hard to explain and I haven't seen a reference to tingling as a side effect in all my reading. Your comment is the closest (close but no cigar, right ; ) ).

I tried paroxetine hcl for a couple weeks for anxiety, and I got insomnia, night sweats, and awful tingling throughout my entire body. After discontinuing use, due to my discomfort with the side effects, I developed a persistent muscle twitch that happens randomly on any area of my body every few seconds. It's been a couple years since I tried the medication, and I still have the muscle twitches. Anything that can change your brain to that degree that you can't sleep and it feels like little toothpicks poking you all over, all day long, and leaves you with persistent muscle twitching after discontinuing use, just can't be safe.

Paroxetine got me bad too, first day I got constant paresthesias around my whole body, like being stung by needles. It wasn't that usual pins and needles like when your leg "falls asleep", but more of a painful, stinging feeling. Didn't help for my anxiety too.

Aaaand here I am over here with Paroxitine. More restlessness, at the beginning couple of weeks was sleepless. Had reduced appetite so lost around 16 lbs so far. (Started at 204 and am around 190. At about 5'7") Eyes got more sharp and were easier to adjust to greater distances than my normally nearsightedness allowed, this subsided after the body grew more used to it and ocular swelling stopped happening. Libido dropped even more than it already was, which was hard to bring up in the first place. Minor constipation. My audio and tactile sensitivity went through the roof (became aware of all the subtle sounds around me, and aware of everything touching me anywhere. Every bit of fabric moving was felt.). This lead to more occurances of sensory overload shutdown responses, in my case, the overload of stimuli would exhaust me or trigger a migraine. My activity level rose some, and my attention span went from a maybe to none. I have diagnosed ADHD, and it's not uncommon for stimulants and steroids to act in reverse with my personal chemistry. I also happen to have a *terribly* slow metabolism, and my body likes to squeeze every bit of usable energy and nutrition out of foods. It can take 3 or 4 days for food to pass all the way through me. (Average person takes around 15 hours.) It takes around 20ish minutes for things to begin to digest, and take effect, the effects of foods and medications lasts longer than it should. Even at the lowest dose,(10mg) Paroxitine stays active in my body for roughly 40 hours. At the lowest dose, I take it every other day and not at all over the weekend. While I have naturally low blood pressure and normally crave salts in an unhealthy amount, it did bring the blood pressure up, but not beyond the considered healthy range. There's been no change in the salt cravings. To stabilize the reactions of my body, my gen prac gave me a stimulant based prescription which helps bring the attention span back where it should be, and calms the brain's and body's heightened state. This lasts roughly 20-25 hours. Coming off the meds completely around the 50 hour mark leaves me feeling exhausted and heavy, very fatigued and lethargic. Mood drops to a numb neutral, and my ability to focus fades to zoning out into what feels like empty drifting below deep water. My reflexes don't lower though, but social responding slows. (Takes a minute or two for me to respond when called out to). This will stabilize again to my pre-medicated state at the 60ish hour mark from when the medication was last taken. The appetite returns to normal and I can eat more, and address cravings. Normally I keep my diet and nutrition balanced based on paying attention to what I'm craving. Usually I crave dairy products when low on either calcium or Vit-D, as my body associates milk products with those nutrients(I'm lactose intolerant, but compensate with enzyme supplements). I can further narrow that down by the accompanied cravings. If I crave red meats, my iron is low or I need to repair damage to muscles, if I crave dark greens, it's usually a combo of calcium and iron. Bananas are Potassium, and apples or grapes are Vit-C. Those are the more obvious ones though. Potatoes are rich in many things, so they don't usually indicate specific needs. In general my diet consists of heavy protein and heavy carbohydrate filled foods. With the reduced appetite, I'm having to listen harder to the body's cues for what it's running low on.

Paroxetine changed my life for the better. I had been in an incredibly bad way for a long time and it helped me develop the tools to make my situation better. It worked very quickly and luckily, aside from a bit of weight gain, I didn't have any of the negative side effects. It's definitely not for everyone though and my friend had a really tough time on it and went through every negative side effects mentioned and more. It's wild how these drugs affect people so differently. There needs to be way more research done into mental health rather than using medications to mask the underlying issues. Luckily for me, paroxetine was what worked for me at that time, and it was the first SSRI we tried. Most people aren't that lucky unfortunately 😔
