We need to admit, Uganda before Arabs/Egyptian and European/British, Uganda do not have city but settlement, build with mud and straw/dry grass, and roof with palm or grass. that it. no stone structure, yes British take resource in Africa, before European Sub-saharan do not have city, it just village, and king living in huge hut. in zimbabwe is the same, one wall not like medieval european city or medieval japan, chinese, cambodia, malaya, java, arab, persian and india city, no road, no sewer, no dam, no hospital, no writing script not even adpoted from others example like ethophia take from old south arabian script and modified it to geez. so britsh modernized Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, many old town and city build by British and Dutch. in swahili coast in kenya down to Tazaniania stone city build by Arabs, fort, palace ,city walls and city gates, road, street and house quater, similar to in any arab city in arabia, levant and north africa. portugese also build fort. kilwa ruins build by shirazi arab, intermarried arab and bantu, and perrsian with bantu, but in 1964, all arab be kick out, most all them go to Oman and Uk, others like persian muslim or zororastian, Indian hindu or muslim also be kill and kick out in zanzibar.

David Browne yes sir I understand you I really do but I also understand him and I see that both of you mean the same thing ... the new generation is Not responsible for the acts of the past generation and its history now but history is to reflect on objectively and see the things that our ancestors weren't able to see and understand why only to raise enough awareness to not repeat the acts of the past because UK is still very greedy country example is the war it lead on Iraq for no good reason beside money and oil and brought about Iraq's total destruction and misery today. And that's what this man also sees but can't voice clearly. We just should reflect and change attitude toward the world I am not English by the way not even related :)

sara meachel Then he probably should start asking for reparations from Turkey & Saudi Arabia first. The Rashidun & Ottoman spread across sub-saharan Africa long before the West did and certainly did far more damage. Oh but wait, come to think of it...why does nobody talk about the previous empires that appeared before the western powers started dabbling in colonialism? Is it because - gasp - it's easier to target moderate white people for easy money & outrage?

the thing that enrages me the most is that many ppl here in comments section are just simply trying to defend their actions, even after knowing they were wrong you say it's our forefathers work..why should we apologize? then why do you celebrate the glory of your forefathers if you have the pride to celebrate their success..then also have the guts to accept their wrongdoings

@@Split_Beard my views match with Mr Tharoor's. Personally I don't think anything should be given as aid. Why doesn't Britain teach the deteriorating effects of the colonialism

@Kookman oh shut up. Don't you even dare to justify the criminal acts by saying it benefited us. Mr Tharoor has covered all your points. Nothing... absolutely nothing was done for the welfare of Indian people. It was only for themselves. And how arrogant are you to say that colonialism was the only way forward. India was a shining jewel and tremendous amount of 'material' and spiritual wealth as well. Ppl say india missed the bus of industrialization...no, we were thrown under the bus of industrialization so that Britain can get on easily. We were set back atleast half a century just coz of the Britain's actions

We are asking the same of you...just recognise the atrocities your forefathers have committed and for develop some Goddamn empathy. Just accept and say sorry. That’s all we want. This is true but when it comes to the slave trade of Africa at large, the British mostly traded, the European superpowers powers did not penetrate into Africa until well into the 18th century, while Britain made the engagement of sale and purchase and transport of slaves illegal in the empire in 1807, leading to the abolishment act of slavery of 1833, first taken into effect in Parliament in 1834, would it not also include those who captured and sold the slaves to the Europeans in the first place? And considering that the debt of said act of abolishment was not paid in full until 2015/2016 by the British tax payers, would it not be a bit unfair to impose such a debt upon the empire, and how will the benefits of empire vs disadvantages And how will those be accurately calculated, and can the Europeans nations then also seek reparations for the Barbery Slave trade, could the Europeans then also seek reparations from the descendent providers of the slaves in Africa for faulty merchandise. If this goes into effect when will it stop? Will it ever stop. And what about the Africans and Arabs, who enslaved a far larger number of people then the Europeans but achieved very little on the larger scale of things, will there be reparations sought from them aswell? This will serve as the base for overarching supremacy and entitlement. And it will serve as the base for a racially motivated conflict. Which is exactly the agenda at play. One must keep in mind that during the yrans atlantic slave trade the common European had no rights, were worked to death, impoverished, living in squalor conditions in slums worse then anywhere else in the world, and en masse, and the desire is for the descendents of those lost souls to pay for reparations, even having just finished paying for the abolishment of slavery act of 1833... Is that somehow fair and just? Nothing about that makes the slightest lick of sense and as Thomas Sowell said, had the christians Europeans done as the Muslim counterpart snd neutered their slaves all this would've been avoided... One act of humanity leads to inhumanity which inturn leads to humanity again and so the cycle continues

A dozen families were involved in the slave trade. He provided no evidence africa would be better of without colonialism. Immigrants in the U.K. should be prepared to leave if they want reparations, and they should ask the Arabs and Africans for cash first.

should the British government pay reparations to me because of this injustice? this is poor historical practice in nearly every way. your reductive, structuralist perspective is a product of the epistemological hegemony colonialism induced. ironic really, you're using western theoretical tools to criticise colonialism in order to pursue an arguably western materialistic gain. i have a history degree, which i acknowledge provides me with a rudimentary understanding of how the past functions, yet i know enough to say that you have no right to moralise and construct the past to suit your political agenda.

***** Your personal guilt is not the issue, the son in this case is the country itself. The fact remains you live in a nation built on the proceeds of slavery and colonialism. Benefits you have personally received include, but are not limited to: Living in a highly industrialised society, given that the industrial revolution was funded on the slave trade, the sale of sugar in the Caribbean colonies, and the profits from colonialism in India in particular. Living in a state with well established, functioning infrastructure and transport links, strongly linked to the first point. Railways, bridges, trains, roads, all were first built during the colonial era. In fact, if we consider British colonialism to have ended in 1980, with the independence of Zimbabwe, (even though Hong Kong wasn't given back to China until 1999), a vast array of buildings and pieces of infrastructure built before that can be directly linked to British colonial policy. As an aside, Air Travel and the NHS were both established during this era as well. There is also the moral question of restitution considering the millions of colonial troops who fought for Britain in both world wars. In fact in WW2 there were more colonial troops fighting than native British!

As they said, it is not about quantifiable reparations given the fact you cannot put money on people's suffering. It's about recognition of these damaging imperialist illegal invasion and robbery of other people. If there was real quantifiable monetary reparation, Britain would go bankrupt given most of its development is powered by stolen resources.

Hold up, the British didn’t come to Uganda( as it is now) until 1892, and British chap named Baker had led an expedition to Buganda in the 1860s to try and stop the Slave Trade by the Arabs. The Brits had abolished Slavery in 1836 and were among the first to do so. Go and ask for Reparations from the Arabs who plied their slave ships up and down the east coast of Africa for centuries. I’m not saying that Britain wasn’t involved in the Slave Trade but it wasn’t responsible for it everywhere and as I say Britain was among the first to abolish it and then actively sought to prevent it elsewhere.

The working classes in Britain during the time of slavery were living and working sometimes (particularly in the East End of London ) in the most appalling slum conditions with prostitution and begging for food a common occurrence. Like slavery this was the fault of the aristocracy and wealthy, who were the slave owners and landlords of the slum areas. If reparation is to be paid at all then it should be from the wealthy and not from the majority of the taxpaying working class.

Once we are reimbursed from the Vikings, Saxons, Angles, Arabs we can pass that reparation on. Hopefully you will be hunting down the African chiefs that made their fortunes from selling neighbouring villages into slavery to whomever could pay for them. However there are plenty of seals in the house clapping to get the UK citizens to pay a penalty to the former colonies. We have only just paid off the abolition of slavery cost, so we can start paying who now?

n 1807 the British Government wanted to abolish slavery, and tried the act failed. So, in 1833 the British Government wanted to abolish slavery throughout the British Empire and tried again with the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. The British aristocracy who had plantations the islands did not want this. So, in order to pass the act the British government aka the British taxpayer paid the British slaver holders what would amount to billions of dollars in today’s money to free their slaves. In order to get this money Britain used 40% of its national budget to buy freedom for all slaves in the Empire. Britain borrowed such a large sum of money for the Slavery Abolition Act that it wasn’t paid off until 2015,” a graphic posted by the political activist Raheem Kassam reads. This means that living British citizens helped pay for the end of the slave trade with their taxes. Using this and current woke logic the descendants of slaves owe the British government billions of dollars.

What a great speech! The sad thing is we can't do very much to undo the damage we have done. I do think we should stop interfering in foreign affairs in Africa that we are still doing to this day. Maybe we allow free citizenship to all British colonised countries so at least they can benefit from what was built partly by them, but that still means they start from the bottom in this country. However, it would allow them to slowly benefit generation by generation so at least their children could start to benefit. I guess it's very hard because all people have been part of wars and oppression when we look far enough into history. 30-40% of the population of ancient Greece were slaves and I am of Greek heritage, if I found out that my ancestors were slaves, I don't feel like I deserve any rewards for their oppression. It's such a hard problem to fix, but we have to take pride in the fact the world is progressing, poverty is decreasing globally and although it would be better to re-write history, we have to move forward knowing the past has happened and to equalise things in light of the current situation.

They don't need your free citizenship. How condescending. Africa is more resource rich than any continent on the planet. If anything, the Europeans were the ones invading it given that they were running from their barren lands. No one is asking for reparations in monetary scale but the Europeans have simply rigged the global economy in their favour and continue to participate in the internal damage of the continent of Africa. I do not deny that Africans have more work to do to fix this issue.

Why does everyone condemn the British/white westerners for the British empire and colonialism in general, but prior empires... totes legit! "Roman empire? Fantastic, wasn't it so great?" "Macedonian empire? Impressive, well done." "Mongol empire? Bit harsh, but the silk road was still good." "British empire? How dare you, you racists!" Countries, territories, properties etc throughout all history were defined by fighting over it, including the tribes and nations in Africa. History should be treated as just that, as history, not imposing modern liberal values on it, and not holding modern nations, let alone individuals (Why call out Benedict Cumberbatch? Dude... uncool.) as responsible for it (even if you admit that they weren't directly responsible for it, but heavily implying that they're profiteering from it).
