Ildefons Herwegen was a Benedictine monk, historian, liturgist and abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Maria Laach. He promoted in particular a reflection on the central role of the #liturgy and, in addition to having encouraged Romano Guardini to his first publication, allowed another central figure for 20th century theology to emerge: Odo Casel.
On 26 June 1913 he was unanimously elected abbot of Maria Laach and immediately became an important figure of reference. He was ordained bishop by Michael Felix Korum, the same man who ordained Odo Casel.
He is rightly described as one of the founders and one of the most important promoters of the #liturgicalmovement in Germany. Ildefons Herwegen was able to reconcile a profound respect for tradition with a careful and fruitful dialogue with the people and issues of his time. He also opened access to the great liturgical celebrations of the monastery to lay people.
It was at Herwegen's instigation that Romano Guardini published his first work, 'The Spirit of the Liturgy' in the Ecclesia Orans series.
Ildefons Herwegen devoted himself to the study of #Benedict and his Rule, which he considered not only a primary source for monastic life, but also a luminous reference for the liturgy and the Church as a whole. He perceived the need to look at the liturgy as a source of life starting from the worship and experience of the early Church.
The Italian version of the text 'St Benedict. Psychological Profile' of 1932, is translated by the Montecassino monks from the third German edition. The author aims to draw a picture of Benedict's inner life.
