St Helena Cloud Forest Project - Year 1 Overview

This Year 1 overview of the St Helena Cloud Forest Project, lays out the ambitious objectives of this huge conservation effort to increase the island's cloud forest habitat by 25% and boost its water supply by a fifth.
Coordinating the project is the RSPB, bringing together a dedicated line-up of experts that include the on-island, Peaks Conservation team.
Cloud forests are found in tropical, mountainous regions, where the trees are constantly often surrounded by fog. They cover less than 0.4% of the world’s land area but are home to an estimated 15% of all species.
Over the last 40 years the world's cloud forests have decreased by almost 20%.
St Helena’s cloud forest has declined from an estimated 600 hectares before humans’ arrival on the island (1502) to just 16 hectares today.
This highlights what a vitally important and exciting project is now underway.

Thanks very much for this video of the Cloud Forest Project. I have such great memories of the many post walks on the island and especially the Peaks National Park and the hike to Diana's Peak. I was able to spend two weeks exploring in 2019 and it will remain as one of the high points of my travels for ever.

Hey Skye, the ENRP conservation team do make field trips to the Barn and surrounding areas, such as Cox's Battery, to collect wild endemic seed, monitor progress of the plants and to re-introduce more native dryland endemics back into their natural habitat. It's pretty unforgiving terrain though, as you seem to already know, so it really is a long-term effort. Lots of patience required 😊 Overall though, the conservation work on St Helena has steadily ramped up over the last 40 years or so. Cheers 😀

I have been following Saint Helena on U Tube for years. It’s such a fascinating place. I know I’ll never get to visit but I have a hat and shirt from there and get many comments and questions. Many happy greetings from Russellville, Tn. USA

I live at the edge of an environmentally sensitive cloud forest on the Big Island of Hawaii, above Kailua-Kona. I want to donate to this Cloud Forest project. I'm not wealthy, but I own some real estate. I am in my 70s. I don't have family and when I die I want my legacy to include forestry projects on St. Helena. The bulk of my assets will go to forestry conservation projects on the Big Island of Hawaii. I like to think of this as (my own) 20 degree latitude project. North latitude or south latitude, this is the sweet spot for all climate zones around the world. I want to promote re-forestry in all the regions of this general latitude.
