Napoleon there???
@whatthesaintsdidnext6 күн бұрын
Not anymore. Although he died on St Helena in 1821 and was buried here, his body was exhumed and removed to Les Invalides in Paris, France, in 1840. However, his tomb on St Helena and Longwood House where he was held captive are now both French property and well maintained as museum attractions. You may find this article about Longwood House of interest, from our blog: whatthesaintsdidnext.com/longwood-house-st-helena-final-home-of-napoleon/ Thanks for visiting our channel 😊

Hi Tu Chenz, thanks for checking out our video 👍 Napoleon died on St Helena in 1821 where he was entombed and remained until 1840, when his body was removed to France where it now rests in Les Invalides, Paris. His empty Tomb on St Helena is, today, a very popular tourist attraction, as is Longwood House, his last residence. 😊

Cost of living for most people is generally high, on St Helena. With most goods, including food, being imported, this adds to the all round costs. It's tough, but people manage.

Yes, Napoleon's body is now in Les Invalides, Paris. This video shows a ceremony on St Helena, at The Tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte, on 15 October 2015, exactly 200 years since the Frenchman arrived on the island. It was to mark a significant moment in the island's history along with French dignitaries, the Island's Governor and members of the public. There is also an annual ceremony held on 5 May at The Tomb to commemorate Napoleon's death.

Hey Nuno, it was indeed the Portuguese who discovered St Helena, in 1502. 😂😂 Hopefully we won't be needing arrestor cables anytime soon! TBH, now the airport has been operating for seven years and we get to see the flight in/out every week, it's actually not all that dramatic at all, compared to some of the airports we've seen on KZfaq from other places. There have been a couple of RAF C-17 landings since this was filmed, so the 757 no longer holds the title of largest aircraft to land at St Helena. I go around like insane and tell people that one day I am going to go there and write a novel about solitude. For now it seems like it is beyond my reach I am happy though becuase longing for there is keeping me going forward as someone who struggles for finding a meaning of their life. It is okay Saint Helena wait for me becuase hopefully I am going to show up there one day

We will wait for you, Maria ❤️ St Helena really does offer the opportunity to 'unplug' from the world and reflect. A few times a week, in the late afternoons, we usually hike to a place called Cox's Battery, sit on the cliff top and just take in the amazing ocean view in front of us, in complete solitude. Very peaceful and good for the soul. Hope to see you here one day 👍Best wishes from St Helena 😊

Hi Nurul, yes, we have internet services on St Helena provided by Sure South Atlantic. 👍 Until recently internet came via an expensive satellite link with limited bandwidth, so speeds were extremely slow and data packages were limited. In October 2023, the Island’s digital link switched from a satellite to the Equiano fibre-optic, undersea cable, which has significantly enhanced the internet service for consumers, including affordable, unlimited data plans for the first time. How did Napoleon enjoy his visit?
@whatthesaintsdidnextАй бұрын
Hi Keith, thanks for checking out our channel and your comment. As far as we understand, Napoleon was not very impressed with St Helena and did not enjoy living (being held) in Longwood. However, when he first arrived on the island, Longwood House was not yet ready, so he spent the first two months living at The Briars. The cool climate and quiet location there suited the emperor. He particularly enjoyed the company of his hosts, the Balcombes, and strolling the surrounding gardens. His time at the Briars is said to be his happiest on St Helena. whatthesaintsdidnext.com/the-napoleon-st-helena-history-remembered-200-years-on/ “The only good thing about St Helena is the coffee,” Napoleon supposedly proclaimed. He was an avid coffee lover and a great fan of the island’s green-tipped Bourbon Arabica beans.

Hi Richard, it depends on what you mean re flights? There remain, unfortunately, the possibility of delays and postponements due to unfavourable weather at St Helena, which as we saw during 2023, can happen at any time of the year. Generally this means persistent low cloud and poor visibility for landing. Will try to get hold of some hard data for you. But otherwise, the service provider, Airlink, do an excellent job of operating the flights. Thanks for viewing the video and your comment 👍

Why all the cars? Surely not needed.
@whatthesaintsdidnext2 ай бұрын
Hi @JohnPanto, yes, unfortunately the island has failed to implement a practical and effective public transport system so private vehicles have become essential for getting around. Although the island's footprint is quite small, (47 sq miles) the terrain is all mountainous, which makes walking or cycling a challenging way to get around. Although Jamestown looks particularly congested during working hours on weekdays, elsewhere on the island is quite different and traffic volumes are very low. Hey @machinelearng, we tend not to get anything too extreme. Even lightning is quite rare to see, perhaps once every 7 years if we're lucky and then it's right out on the horizon. Situated in the tropics St Helena’s climate is kept cool by the south-easterly trade winds. Temperatures are generally comfortable year-round, and can reach highs of 30C in the summer and lows of 13C during winter. February is normally the hottest month and August the coolest. In fact, August is generally considered to be one of the worst of the winter months as has 'affectionately' been nicknamed, 'Scruffy August' whatthesaintsdidnext.com/st-helena-weather-scruffy-august-blues/ Thanks for stopping by our channel and the comment 👍😊

Is it possible for a retired US expat to live here and do volunteer work here?I am a fruitarian.What fruit is grown on the island?Blessings to all
@whatthesaintsdidnext2 ай бұрын
Hi Billy, thanks for the comment and checking out our video 👍 Basically, the answer to your question is yes. The official advice on immigration is here: www.sainthelena.gov.sh/public-services/immigration/ Most fruit grows on the island but very little, if any, is done on a commercial basis. Mostly people have different fruit trees in there gardens. Bananas grow easily here, mostly in the upper contours. Mangoes are plentiful in Jamestown. Tungi, or cactus, grows wild and we do eat the fruit, although this isn't as popular as it once was: whatthesaintsdidnext.com/how-to-eat-prickly-pear-tungi-st-helena-style/ Loquats, medlems, guavas... these grow wild and easily. There are a few apple, peach and plum trees, although not as plentiful as previous years. @@BillyCag-zh1go Hi Billy, it's not something we feel knowledgeable enough to advise on the details/process ourselves. Your best approach would be to make contact via official govt immigration channels, via the link we gave you earlier. The Public Service Jobs website also has some good pages/information about moving to St Helena, what to bring, local services etc., have a look through here: sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/moving/ The Property Finder website lists residential sales: www.propertyfinder.sh/listings/property-for-sale/ We would caution however, the dynamics of living here as opposed to being a short-term tourist are quite different, the isolation is not for everyone. @whatthesaintsdidnext2 ай бұрын
Hi @luismanuel2612, it's a Shrove Tuesday tradition going back many years, organised every year by the Anglican Church. The event stems from Christians making pancakes as a treat and to use up remaining ingredients in the kitchen before the start of Lent. Although a few people on island still observe Lent, the pancake race on Shrove Tuesday endures more as a community event and as you can see from the video, is still well attended and is a lot of fun for young and not-so-young alike 😊 Thanks so much for viewing the video and your comment, all the best from St Helena 🌅👍
