I have wanted to transcribe the opening chorus of the St John Passion for piano solo for a long time, but every time I looked at the score while listening to various performances I just thought it wasn't possible. After completing my projects on the Mass in B minor and St Matthew Passion, especially by studying Selmar Bagge's exemplary transcription of the latter, I finally decided to give it a shot yesterday.
As usual I try to preserve the counterpoint as much as possible, but this time I have allowed more flexibility instead of adopting a strict literal approach, which would bring more confusion to the score than desirable. Sometimes to preserve the running sixteenth note drive, a choral voice is replaced with an instrumental voice. Due to the simplification, much of the piercing harmony is inevitably lost, especially in the B section. I consider this a first draft, but I have no doubt about the playability. I will upload the score and my own recording when they are ready.

The attempt to transcribe the opening chorus of BWV245 for piano is very honorable but also extremely demanding. This version here should be very difficult to play, which also explains the MIDI realization. In addition, the melodic tones of the right hand sound quite choppy here compared to the sustaining tones of the wind instruments and the choir in the original. Perhaps this problem could be alleviated by slowing down the MIDI a bit and adjusting more reverberation. Nevertheless, this piece does not seem to me to be well suited for a piano reproduction. With a church organ and its sustaining sounds you could probably get closer to the original.

PS: In search of an organ transcription I found this completely different approach for the piano. It's also not easy to play, but sounds a bit more fluid than your version. However, the comparison is not entirely fair, because an acoustic piano with more reverb is used there. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLafachmuLK4ZmQ.html

I appreciate your honest feedback. I fully agree that the sustain is an intrinsic issue with the piano. In this MIDI realization I added minimal pedal and reverb. Also note that I prefer a slower tempo (similar to the performance by the Netherlands Bach Society), which exacerbates the sustain problem. In other words, I could've chosen a faster tempo with ample pedal and reverb to improve the sustain, but that aspect was not at the top of my priority. An organ transcription would certainly address these problems that you pointed out, with the additional benefit of bringing the bass from the left hand to the foot pedal, but I don't play the organ and preparing an organ transcription is beyond my knowledge.

I forgot to notify you that my performance is now available: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJ1znJd4u9uye3k.html The "choppiness" here is not heard in the recording, which shows that it is indeed an artifact of my MIDI rendition and not with the transcription per se. My goal is to increase the tempo by at least 10% in a future release.

Yes, there are many difficult passages and I suppose each performer would need to figure out their own fingering. When I first completed this transcription I couldn't play it at all. Now I can play at 2/3 of my target tempo. I hope to share my performance later this year so stay tuned!
