St. John’s Wort or Hypericum originated in Europe and Asia before spreading throughout the world. Employed against a variety of ailments for over 2000 years, enthusiasts recommend this phytotherapy without scientific evidence for menopausal symptoms, insomnia, irritable bowel disease and peptic ulcers.
St. John’s Wort may relieve symptoms of depression equally as well as selective serotonin receptor inhibitors (SSRIs) including Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Celexa. The major advantage of St. John’s Wort appears to be the dramatically lower incidence of side effects.
While not all studies demonstrate benefit, St. John’s Wort outsells Prozac in Germany and Austria by a factor of 4:1. The typical dose averages 900 mg each day divided into three equal portions with some individuals requiring as little as 500 mg while others need 1800 mg.
Confusion exists regarding the active ingredient. Once thought to be hypericin, it now appears hyperforin provides most of the antidepressant effect. Unfortunately the quality of St. John’s Wort varies between batches and depends on the method of extraction. The FDA does not assure either the safety or efficacy of St. John’s Wort.

I started taking it last week. For some reason, I felt a lot better the next day. I struggle with tiredness a lot, and I'm working a lot at the moment, so it's a bit hard to get a great guage on it right now. But it seems to make me a bit more carefree so far. I got put on the anti's for years, and I feel those things are brutal honestly. Nausia, trembling, worsening anxiety, impotence, fragility etc..... The doctors I went to were literally lying to my face; because, sadly, its seemed they just couldn't care less, so i'm checking this stuff out. I'm wondering if it might be better to take when needed.

Update. I don't like st. John's wort. It's better than ssri's, but I don't like serotonin boosts in general. Even probiotics that create serotonin are too much. I don't believe serotonin is what controls anxiety and depression.

@@Suchapill Serotonin boosts make me feel drained emotionally, i realise that now. I went all the way down to something as harmless seeming as a new probiotic that increases serotonin. And after three days i recognised that old feeling. Lately I have found fish oils boost my mood, as far as depression is concerned. High Epa fish oil. The rest for me, at the moment comes down to understanding what I feel and how others feel. not worrying about worrying about worrying. The ultimate cure though, is facing your fears. Those things I'm avoiding that will improve my life.

Mirtazapine = very powerful modern antidepressant. Has slight sedation effect which is good for depressed people finding it hard to sleep (interestingly the sedation effect works better at half dose, and sedation effect decreases as dose is increased) . The drug also builds up in system and works faster than SSRIs. Drawbacks = you will always have an appetite and will eat more. Also it effects sexual function for most people.

Out of all of the medication I had taken for depression, that was the one that had the least amount of side effects. It definitely worked for depression, but it still felt like I was on something, which for some people is fine. It definitely makes you crave things like carbs and cookies, so if you are overweight, I would caution it.

I take 900mg per day of the Nature Valley capsules from good ol' walmart in the morning (does not make me nauseous so I don't divide the dose). It's only been 17 days but it has been life changing since about day 5. I was not expecting any effect actually, it was just a last-ditch effort before I was going to give up and ask a doctor for an SSRI. I was worried it was just a placebo effect, but I really had 0 expectations and I've continued improving since. Honestly it feels like I found a cheat code and it SAVED my life, for real. Side effects were a headache at night the first week and I get a "floaty" or lightheaded feeling a few hours after taking it. I will say I was desperate and doubted it would work well alone so I took it w/ a glass of grapefruit juice the first week to enhance it, which you should not do, and I probably did not need lol. Definitely recommend people try it if struggling (and not on other meds)!

When I asked the hospital why I had a seizure on meds they said because I was hypoglycemic from intermittent fasting...... If you are going to take a medication that gives you a seizure after not eating for 14 hours, I recommend stay the f away lmao

It shouldn't make much of a difference because it can take a week or so for it to become effective. It's not something you take and it has an immediate effect, it takes a few days for it to build up in the system and to have an effect.
