Thank you for another great show. The trip to St. Kilda looked amazing but I wouldn't fancy it in bad weather! I would love to know how Marcus discovered the location for his shot. It seems so far from civilisation to have been happened upon by chance. Initially I didn't fancy the cyanotype article but after watching it I'm glad I did - it was fascinating. Just shows you should always keep an open mind!

Hi Alan. The answer to your question is that I have explored every corner of the main island of St Kilda, so it was inevitable that I found the viewpoint. Thanks for your kind words about the cyanotype. We try to offer something more than just the obvious mainstream content. All the best (Marcus).

Excellent as always. BTW you're not restricted to the size of photographic negatives for cyanotypes, my wife gained her Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society with a panel of 15 A4 cyanotype flower prints. She shot the flowers digitally uploaded into Lightroom and Photoshop for mono conversion and post processing then inverted the images and inkjet printed them out onto A4 inkjet film (designed for OHP's if you remember them!) which she then used to create her cyanotypes.
@PhotographyOnline

Hi Simon. We never said you were restricted to size - we said the size of the print has to be the same as the negative. We’ll be printing negs on a future show but we wanted to keep it simple for the first one.

I used UV lights when I was at University and had to take precautions - not only for my eyes as you can well imagine, hence my concern. There are much easier and cheaper and more flexible ways of doing cyanotypes than was shown in the programme. Kits for cyanotype are available on eBay and Amazon. You can use your digital image, turn it into a negative in software and inkjet print on OHP film to give an A4 negative, for example. Instead of a printing frame you can use two pieces of glass and clips to hold the paper flat. It does not have to cost £100 and you can get cyanotype images form your digital files.

The £100 was for the UV box. We didn’t mention a cost for the kit.

Yet again, another amazing show, particularly liked the St. Kilda segment, looks absolutely stunning. Noting that Marcus was taking a panorama while there really peaked my interest, as pano landscapes is my absolute favorite thing to shoot. Pano shooting, and maybe HDR panos (easy on the HDR bit) would be an interesting feature to see how you would recommend going about this, especially with a minimal HDR part to it. Thanks again for another great show.

Hi Alan. Great to hear it was useful. I assume you’ve checked out our 2 panoramic shows we did at the beginning of the year where we went into detail about shooting panoramic stitched images? We didn’t cover HDR as that would have been too much info for a single feature but this may be useful to you if you haven’t already seen it. Thanks for watching and for your continued support.

@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
You can go on a day trip which would typically give you around 4 hours on the island, but I camped overnight to allow me to be on location when the light was good. You need permission to camp and it becomes expensive as you have to pay for two boat journeys.

Hi Marcus, I'm at the point to invest money in two new tripods. Today I got my new lightweight travel tripod from Benro, the Tortoise Carbon tripod which looks identical to the Kingjoy C83 Travel/Compact Tripod. I absolutely love it. It's lightweight and compact. But, in the near future I also consider to invest money in a bigger tripod and I was wondering which model you are using in this video. I noticed it has four carbon sections in stead of three which I could find in the shop. Sadly most models are out of stock, but that will probably change in the near future. Last sunday I watched the new video and also invested in large 3 Legged Thing Stilettoz spikes. Thanks for the tip. These tips will give me more grip on the beaches, dunes and stones along the Waddensea coastlines.

Hi Gert. The tripod I use in the show is the A86 which we do have in stock. It has 4 leg sections and it very solid. The other alternative would be the C86 but we won’t have that for at least a couple of months due to manufacturing backlogs. Thanks for watching.

Can anyone in this community give me some advice. I currently have a Nikon d750 with a 28-300mm lens. I am looking to get into wildlife photography but I just feel this lens isn't enough to get close to any birds etc. There are bigger lenses out there but my budget won't stretch that far. So my question is, should I sell my gear & reinvest in another camera with a bigger lens, or is there any alternative lens I could go for if I sold my 28-300mm. I would like to remain with a full frame camera. Please delete if asking this is the wrong place ask. Thanks.

Hi David. It’s a Zoom H6. Had to use that over a smaller model due to needing phantom power.

Just thinking about Marcus’ dilemma in not being able to capture the seabirds in his shot and wondering if he could solve this problem with some focus stacking, combined with the time lapse to achieve the goal? Say using the shot he took with another at F4 with fast shutter speed to catch the birds then combine?

Hi David. This is Marcus. Thanks for your suggestion, but even at a wider Aperture, the exp time would still be well under 1/500, so it wouldn’t solve the issue. Also, I try not to interfere with a scene of nature, and using a shorter exp time to record the birds would end up having to clone lots of them out from overlapping frames, so this isn’t something I would ever do. Of course, this is just my own moral philosophy rather than something which is right or wrong. Thanks for watching.

@@PhotographyOnline fair enough, hope you get the shot ur after one of these days, however, as long as you don’t, I guess it gives you the excuse to keep going back to enjoy that fantastic scenery and bird life.

Great video as usual! Suggest you break it into 2 15 minute chunks to account for the internet attention deficit disorder ;-)

Hi Amit. Thanks for watching. We’ve already broken our monthly 1 hour show into 2x 30 min shows, so we don’t want to split it again. Also, we’ll have another monthly show starting soon which will then fit in nicely between our usual shows. All the best.

Can't Marcus hire a helicopter (piloted by Tom Cruise) and drop him in commando/Mission Impossible style? 😀

Why not upload in 4k?

A few reasons, but we may upload in 4K in the future, but it’s not practical for us to do so now. Most people don’t know the difference.

can cyanotype be used on glass?
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 ай бұрын
No, because the chemicals have to be absorbed by the substrate. You’re also relying on the brightness of the substrate to give you your highlights, so glass would only work if it was back lit by a white panel (assuming you could get the chemicals to be absorbed).
