St. Mary’s island is known for its unique rock formations and brilliant sea views. This island is off the coast of Malpe in Udupi, Karnataka.
Only way of getting to St. Mary’s island is by boat. Boats are available from Malpe beach at regular frequency of every 20 minutes.
It takes 20 minutes by boat ride from Malpe beach to St. Mary’s Island.

In the year 1498, Vasco da Gama landed at this Island on his way to Calicut. He fixed a cross on the island as a dedication to the Blessed Mother Mary. Hence the island got its name as St. Mary’s Island.
St. Mary’s island is known for their distinctive geological formation of columnar rhyolitic lava.
Considering the importance and rarity of such occurrence, these islands were classified as a “National Geological Monument” in 2001 by the Geological Survey of India.
This Islands are seashell haven with seashells of various shapes and sizes littered across the coast.
It is advisable to walk with foot wear to avoid getting hurt due to sharp broken sea shells.
St. Mary’s Island is ideal destination for Pre Wedding Shooting. However, drone cameras are not allowed inside the island.
