Elmas was born into a family of wealthy entrepreneurs in Smyrna (now İzmir), a city in the Ottoman Empire. It was soon discovered that the little boy was a child prodigy: he began taking piano lessons and writing short piano pieces under the tutelage of a local music teacher, Mr. Moseer, and already at the age of thirteen, the young virtuoso performed an all-Liszt piano recital.

Music is astounding when it arouses an emotion or a mood within you. it's not necessarily about being melodic, religious or overtly musical, but about carrying the listener somewhere where he was not before. In this case, I feel like sitting on a dense park bench by a warm evening. the wind gently caresses my face, and everything is silent except for the nature around me. It is interesting that I mention that it evokes the silence when I speak of this kind of music

The orchestra is pretty atrocious but damn this piece is amazing. It's such a pity how many phenomenal works exist but are unheard. This as well as Elmas' other piano concerti and also Moszkowski's and Schawenka's, Scriabin's and Medtner's (Number one) all need to be played. I hope to play all of these works soon enough.

Just discovered this composer, can't believe that I have never heard of him till now. Stephan Elman, an Armenian composer that lost his hearing at 35, was married to Aimee, a painter with no arms! They lived together for 26 years, until the death of Stephan. What a remarkable story of two remarkable talented artists

Marcel Noya There is no need of strict use of english if someone wants to express himself on its native language. He basically explained how he felt each note of the Larghetto, and how fully of richness the composition is, loving the magical entrances of the orchestra, and how it interacts with the piano voice

A good dose of Chopin, a sprinkling of Schumann , add some maniacal Liztian finger-acrobatics - pour some nice melodies over it all - et voila! But that is not to diminish this gem - it´s worth listening to - and would merit an upload in better sound quality! Excellent pianist in this recording by the way! Bravo to the artists and thank you for the upload!

Many thanks for this rarest of treasures! To read that Elmas was European-trained did not surprise me, though I guessed (incorrectly) that some of his training was in France. The Wikipedia article is thankfully informative; as of August 2014 Grove's "Dictionary of Music and Musicians" has no article on him. Ted Wilks

Very romantic. Solidly entrenched in the late Romantic period of Dohnányi and Moszkowski. Interesting how these concertos were top of the concert program at one time before sinking into obscurity--the graveyard of forgotten piano concertos as I like to refer to it.

All I can say is the composer must have listened to Chopin's 2nd concerto...a lot. Not to disparage his talent, his effort is noteworthy plus the melodies he devised aren't insignificant nor trivial either. My contention however is that it will take me sometime to connect to this emotionally, notwithstanding the prejudice that will arise soon as I hear "Chopinesque" episodes on the piano solo parts and on the tutti sections. But I promise to be unprejudiced as much as I could : )

Just forget Chopin. The structure of this composition bears absolutely no resemblance to anything Chopin ever wrote for Piano & Orchestra. If you listen to music on it's own merit rather than comparing it with what you already know, you will get a lot more out if it. Good luck.
