january 1st, 2020 edit: this video got a lot more attention than I though it would !! here are some things regarding the comments I've been getting:
1) I made this video with the intention to make a part 2, so I didn't put all of her best/ most complicated riffs in it, ex surgeon/marrow/ whatever
2) SOME OF THESE RIFFS ARE IMPROV!! i've leave timestamps of the improvised riffs if I can remember later, but.. I was taking that into consideration making this video, like 'this isn't the greatest thing ever, but it's incredibly good for improv" y'know??
3) damn ma is it that serious
a compilation of st vincent/annie clark being a badass on guitar.

She's a very unique and an inventive composer. As far as her being a guitar god,no. She's not a virtuoso. But she is a brilliant producer, composer, arranger and performer. Like The Edge. His technical ability is fairly unimpressive. But his use of pedals, tones and effects are super unorthodox. The way he fills space. Another example of this would be Adam Jones from TOOL. Very inventive and unique player, but his technicality isn't up to par with what would be considered virtuosity. His playing is somewhat repetitive. But very aggressive and emotive.

@@big_ol_ball838 I like her as a studio artist. Which makes it even worse because she’s clearly talented and knows how to play, but chooses to do this instead. I think she’s got too much pressure on her to be a guitar virtuoso when she’s more or less just proficient and is trying to do some (kinda amateurish ngl) avant garde stuff and throwing a fuzz pedal on top of it. None of that is to say she’s bad or anything obviously and she’s again great on record but they’re probably filtering the best of her experimentation on record and when she improvises live it just sounds a bit rubbish to me and even on a technical level she’s not doing much impressive in any of these clips

What way too many people don't get about St Vincent is they think it's cacophony. It's not. Not in the least. She can tell you exactly what she's playing an why. ...and duplicate it repeatedly. "Minor 2nds" (@0:10) .. yeah, exactly. That's not random notes. ;-) Her stuff might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it's absolutely intentional.

Minor 2nds aren't a thing, that's probably why the guy sounds so confused when she says it. The second degree of the scale is the same in minor and major scales. It is flattened in modes such as Phrygian but then it is referred to as b2 and not minor 2nd. If anything this shows that she doesn't understand the theory behind what she is playing.

@@brayans2859 "Minor 2nds," or maybe she means a flat 2nd; the note just 1 note above the root note. Not that I know much if anything about "music theory," that's just the best I can guess.

I dunno, if it was just a dude in a flannel doing the exact same thing, nobody would care, but because it's a gorgeous model-esque woman it's somehow god-like. She's super cool and has a great aesthetic and look and voice and songwriting ability, and her guitar stunts are a bonus.
