I review the STA-1, a tier 8 Japanese medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of tier 9 Kharkov and tier 10 Glacier battles.
The STA-1 is a typical finesse medium tank. While it is not fast and the armor is weak, it can win with vision control, gun depression, and DPM.
Strengths and Weaknesses
+ Superb DPM (over 2.3k base, 6.23 sec reload)
+ Superb gun depression (-10)
+ Excellent camouflage (over 31 with Concealment and BIA)
+ Good gun handling
+ Good HP (1450)
- Weak turret armor
- Weak hull armor
- Low top speed (45)
- Below average accuracy (0.38 base)

I'll say it again.... Taugrim is one of the absolute BEST follows for WoT game play and learning. And it's not just your gentle tone in videos, because it's easy to see, in the in-game chat that you encourage, coach & guide players on your team. A rare thing indeed in this game. Even rarer from great players. I so appreciate that. Throw in the fact that you carry zero premium ammo in all (or dang close to all!) your tanks, and we have a clear cut winner! Thanks Taugrim.

tanks.gg/compare/sta-1?t=sta-2 The STA-2's top speed (55 vs 45) and gun handling are meaningfully better. But the STA-1 has better DPM. It really depends how much you can put that extra speed to use. I would probably do better in the STA-2, because I'd be able to spot in it moreso than I can in the STA-1.

Thank you again for the awesome review. I remember grinding this line when it was first introduced. I hated it all the way until STB-1. STB-1 became my favorite tank (even with the gun issues) and I absolutely love the rework. The gun and hydro mechanic works great.

A standard highly informative video. Not only do you explain your thought processes during the battle, but it's interesting to hear how you would react if you were the enemy. STA-1 has one good feature: the gun. It's reload is fantastic and you can put a hurting on some fools rushing you with some peek-a-boom tactics. It was fun to play it in Frontlines. The following Type 61 is an upgrade to it with a bit more turret armour designed to deflect the errant shot while playing hull-down and peek-a-booming. And the DPM is also fantastic.

I use camo on every class including heavies. It's for the looks but also for the chance later in battle if we have 2 or 3 heavies in a brawling spot against their 2 or 3 heavies I want to be able to spot them before they spot me and that 3% bonus in the right situation if they don't have camo may be the reason I get the first shot over my enemy. Well if you put camo on say a Maus or type 5 then your camp values will be 3/1..you still get spotted if someone has respectable vr. But I do see the point I.e. if your facing a heavy tank( which typically have bad vr) and the opportunity to outspot them and get the first shot advantage. However ta is like the is u have 400m vr for some reason..

My stats are shit but I'm finally starting to understand this tank. I've been playing since 2013, but literally only focused on heavies. The E75 is one of my favorite tanks, but I thoroughly enjoy the STA-1. The gun is sweet and rips enemies apart if you can catch them after they shoot or if you catch them messing up. This tank for sure gets punished though if you mess up, which is something I'm getting better at.

im currently playing for the stb-1, on the type 61 right now and i feel the sta was one of if not the most enjoyable tank i have played. when i had it, i played the most competitive i ever had, even tho i like the type too, i will propably go back to the sta for fun even when i have the t10

Its has great on the move values amazing gun handling and ok speed limited to 60. But super low profile with bad paper armor. So you can really make it shine in the right hands. Iv only played 800 some odd games and I'm 4 or 5 k ranking in it.

The low profile is good, you don't have to expose much of the tank when ridge fighting. That said, the profile is wide, and as you noted it's not fast.

Its unique. Very good at those ridge pops for damage. Hard to hit. But yes wide wedge profile. I have had the seldom bounce from a heavy but 9 out of 10 do not recommend trying this.

So simple but yet so smart play and shot on that o-ho. I also agree that most people do not understand the "vision game" at all and add map awareness to this. I do not really like this tank or the sta 2 due to the reasons you mentioned. It is just a mediocer tank in my eyes (or i am just not good enough as a player).

Lovely video as usual. But could you try recording with RTX voice, it’s really good at removing background noice. It’s possible to get it to work on all Nvidia gpus. But if you own a rtx card it’s plugg and play. If you don’t get it to work. I would still prefer a video with a airhorn in the background then no video. Keep on rocking ✌️

I was able to get RTX Voice working with just a bit of fiddling with both OBS and with PowerDirector. It filters out background noises beautifully 😀 Thanks so much for the tip 👍

Not offhand, I have not heard of an update after the recent IS-4 buffs were announced. Things tend to fluctuate on the test server quite a bit, so I tend not to focus too much on it.

When you said the Conqueror had a fast reload that's because I noticed a lot of people that run the Conqueror also run the small gun because the average damage per shot is still 280 and with food and a gun rammer you can get the reload down to adjust about for 4 and 1/2 seconds. Personally I prefer the bigger gun because you have 400 Alpha and your penetration is a lot better. But I've definitely learned when I'm going against a conqueror the look and see what gunny has on there that way if it's a smaller gun I know not to pull out really quick because it's got to look super fast reload

Taugrim I've noticed that you exit sniper mode often when firing a shot. Is this intentional? I can see the use for blind shots but aimed shots could affect accuracy I found that I used to do this all the time because I have sniper view assigned to the RMB. But I've taken the time to learn to control hand movements more delicately as it improved my aim. I can hit most shots at 400m+ distance when rng is cooperating, now my problem is game sense and logical thinking (I tend to act & react instinctively and not methodically)

At 19:40 you keep poking from the same end of that mound (with bad "soft cover"). Wouldn't it be better to move to the other end? I'm not pointing anything out - just asking (during battle I very often miss better options). And thank you for your work on the videos!

For those of us that are cheap, you only need hull cam or turret to get full camo affect. It doesn't look as good but you can camo up three tanks for the price of one.

The last 2 requests for lines were 430U and STB-1, so I grinded those lines. I may try the K-91 line. I just got the STB-1 so I'm going to chill from grinding for a bit.

I found the Type 61 not too bad once you unlock the 105mm. The silver rounds on that gun seem to have a high muzzle velocity, so it’s nice for snap shots and sniping from range. Definitely not a frontline tank. 😬

I bought type 61 and realized the cammo is super bad, and gun is not working either... It is not a great sniping gun like leopard, and when it hits only deal with 360 dmg....rage sold within a week. Hopefully stb1 is better.

I was actually looking at the WoT talent calculator recently to see what was up with Prot. The main thing about WoT is the grind. I'd have to level to the cap, then grind blue PVP gear, then grind purple PVP gear, then enchant / socket everything.

I mean I understand the cromwells idea. I know you must always see tanks as aced with max crews, equipment camo etc but if your new tank, 75% crew no equipment because your new and maybe even stock, it does feel like there is absolutely no way to meaningfully impact the game

I 100% agree with you but at the same time I want the obj 260. Most of the missions, with the exception of some of the lt missions encourage people to play selfishly and like donkeys. All my stats have gone downhill since attempting them

Yeah, totally murdering the entire enemy team whilst not taking a single shot in return just for arty to say "Hey bud, having fun? Game too easy? I can fix that!" and they just shit on you for most of your HP the entire game. Arty totally defeats the purpose of skillfully avoiding damage and without them good players would have a ridiculously easy time farming, hence its place in the game, hence why I can't really argue that it's a totally pointless class. I *can* argue, however, that arty is toxic as shit :) Also that Conqueror and I are both HARM members, o7 OTTER, I imagine Fluffy thought that was an easy win :)

That Kharkov match was super close. IMO their 430 and 704s kinda blew the lead Fluffy's team had in field. Their team should have won both city and field.

Just finished with this, did OK with it but I found it to be rather meh, no armour although the turret holds up hull down more than you'd expect, not particularly fast and it's gun is ridiculously inaccurate considering all it's weaknesses. It feels like a slow light tank.

Check out my review of the AMX 50 100, Episode #67. Bottom line is the tier 8-10 AMX heavies are difficult to play. They're huge and have weak turret armor.

Yes, I received it months ago as a NA Community Contributor. It's a funky tank, with the high clip potential and high intra-clip and clip reloads.

This is my first time watching your videos. If I may speak frankly, your video is good. The issues I have are not your videos, it’s the game I have issues with. I’ve been playing for 4 years and I must say that this game has changed from being skill based to RNG based. Rng dominates every aspect of this game now. If you don’t believe me, than go watch my older videos on my channel and you can drastically see the difference between then and now. I had new crews with no skills back then and The game was skill based, now I have great crews and it’s definitely not skill based. Rng has ruined the game, from matchmaking to penetration to accuracy. War thunder literally is the better realistic game. I still enjoy wot but 50% less now that they’ve destroyed the skill based game play. It’s unfortunate but it’s hard truth. Keep up the good work cheers 🥂

RNG has always been there in WoT. It's not good for the game and most modern PVP games ardently strive for little to no RNG. WoT still is largely skill-based - it's why there are such disparaties in win rates, survival rates, WN8, etc. But RNG can be very frustrating. I missed so many shots on the lower plate of the Jadgtiger for example.

Beim Grind hab ich ihn gehasst... Zumindest diese ungenaue zweite Kanone mit den grausam langsamen Granaten, aber mit der Top Kanone wird das Dingen zur richtigen Killermaschine, direkt in 2 Runden je 3,5k Schaden rausgehauem, die Kanone davor war ich teils froh über 1,2k zu haben

Hi Taugrim I understand about the Chaisnipe light in the first battle but in this case he has 2 ebrs on the opposing team who can autoaim HE and wreck that Senlac easily. Honestly I don't know what to do when you have yoloing EBRs, if you try to go to your passive bush you have a good chance of them running over your position. I usually hang back until I know where the EBRs are and in a case like that I am not sure I would have done any different than the senlac.

That Senlac could have done exactly what I did, which is to move up to the bushes on the ridge at E2 and whittle the EBRs away. This is particularly true because our EBR and BC 12t were up front with me as well. There's a big difference between being careful and being irrelevant. That Senlac did 159 damage the entire match. I discussed that at length in my recent video re-reviewing the 13 90.

I am trying to grind this tank and for some reason I am struggling hard! I have a 4 skills crew, over 2000 wn8 with STA-1 and yet only 28% win rate...

You might be farming damage after the outcome (win or loss) is decided. Aside from that, sometimes players get unlucky streaks. I got a bunch of consecutive crap teams when solo queuing in the 430U. Happens to everyone.

Also generally think its excellent players that like playing lights that are not ebrs. How do i counter fantastic light players? It's basically a higher-DPM AMX 30. I reviewed the AMX 30 back in Episode #46.

Only P2W players use camo :P Hey I could hear something in the back round. No biggie but I thought you should know. Also, in the first game although I don't agree with the senlac's position, I kinda understand with all the yolo wheelies right now. I play my lights pretty passive now and I'm a super aggressive player normally.

That noise during the Glacier narration was my wife. Because of COVID-19 and the continued lockdown in California, we're both home 99% of the time. I know the noise is a bit distracting but I can't really do much about it. The Senlac could/should have been up where the BC 12t and I were - there are bushes that that player can use to out-spot the EBRs. Obviously you don't want to challenge the EBRs in the open, as I discussed in my recent re-review of the 13 90.

I don’t really like the STA the armor and speed isn’t good unlike the Type60 who isn’t well armored and is very tall but it’s slow and the low camouflage values the good things I like is the field of vision and the accuracy of gun and it’s penetration values the STA just misses out on the penetration values other that it’s good tank when played as second line or third line tank.

The STA-1's silver penetration (219) is solid/fine for a tier 8 medium. Granted the tier 9's pen is better at-tier.

Regarding the Senlac comment - Overall yeah lights should spot but in his case this makes sense. You already have 2 lights in front spotting. Him going there would result in spotting redundancy. No reason to go there. He should snipe and go spot IF other lights on the team die. This way someone is shooting what is spotted. In light tank heavy teams I often see everyone spotting but only 1 tank that can shoot what is spotted. Granted the Senlac could probably go to the ditch I don't think he was playing bad early on.

He "contributed" 139 damage to the battle. I don't agree with you. There are multiple places he could have gone to be helpful with vision and to use his gun.

@@taugrim I am not saying he played well. Him being bad at shooting things doesn't mean an extra gun shooting what is spotted is a bad idea when tanks are spotted. This was more of an overall comment that sometimes sniping in a light is not automatically a bad decision and you know it. Also there are not multiple places. There is only 1 place. The mid ditch on that map. He might have spoted a TD on the left side of the building there but EBR was driving around right in front of that building so for a large part of the early game he would not have helped that. So I'm not saying he played bad. He did. It's just him sniping when 2 lights are spotting isn't automatically a bad decision. What was bad is that he was sniping when he was also bad at sniping. If he only hit 1 shot of damage him being in a TD would not have changed much. He would do 400-750 but still probably one shot. And I say this as a player who does way more spotting than damage when 3 marking lights. When going for it I usually land 20-40th on dmg for the month in a tank but top10/top5 for spots. So yes spot if you can but spotting redundancy and/or creating too many targets to spot isn't always good when there are no guns to shoot.

@@taugrim I agree. I didn't say "he played good" i simply said there was no reason for him to be spotting as you suggested. You already had 2 tanks spotting. He should be playing differently but he could do that by dealing damage if 2 other faster and better scouts already did the spotting. The problem wasn't him not spotting, the problem was his overall bad gameplay. By conserving hitpoints you would have more scout tanks for late battle. Overall that's not a bad idea if the player is good. He wasn't a good player. I was talking about your overall point which sounded like "scout tanks must always spot,, even if there are 5 scouts per team".

Taugrim, why do you mention what I assume must be the stationary camo values while not firing, when you're talking about the tanks camo values. That is arguably the most useless tank statistic and least interesting camo value since 1: you never really sit still outside of bushes without firing for more than very short moments 2: if sitting still in a bush you're usually safe from just the bush camo in most cases anyway (and this value still only matters when you actually sit and passive spot, which I believe few people do often in other classes than lts).

I strongly disagree. Stationary camo is hugely important in meds. Obviously when moving *into* a bush, you have the moving camo value. But once you're in the bush, the stationary camo value dictates your risk of getting spotted. That said, just sitting in a bush doesn't mean you're necessarily safe. I can tell you from experience that the Type 61 and even STB-1 struggle to not get out-spotted by other meds. The Type 61 has ~20 camo rating, which is simply awful. The STB-1 is at ~28, but that means it gets outspotted by RU meds easily. That happened to me in south Studzianki.

@@taugrim That's interesting. I'd love for you to point some occasions when this happens in the future, because while watching game play I struggle finding occasions where it actually matters. There may certainly be instances where it happens, but it seems rather rare to me, not something which happens even once per a typical round.

If you're referring to 5:25 timestamp, the enemy EBR was near our cap, not near our EBR. We ended up pulling out the win but I still think our EBR and 704 pushing into 3 tier 9s plus arty was not a smart play.

I usually try to passive scout in my lights from somewhat safe positions and try to punish EBRs, then when they die I proceed to scout as normal. I see no point of trying to spar with them since they have a massive advantage over normal light tanks. Uninstalled the game because I have some exams to do, maybe I'll come back to WoT once I finish them, or when they balance the EBRs, whichever comes first.

Oh. I was trying to understand the mechanics of vision, which I'm convinced beyond doubt are different on console v PC. I'm a console player. Our maps are smaller, tanks that are no longer in PC are still present on our platform, and vice versa. Hiding in a bush on our platform is a running joke.

"who say that WoT is a P2W game as they assume that you can't win without spamming premium ammo and using OP premium tanks" It is true that premium ammo is a blight on the game, and some of the premium tanks esp at tier 8 are OP. That said, I started the Road to Unicum series largely to demonstrate that skillful play is what matters most in WoT. All the gold spam in the world won't make a player a Unicum - at most it will raise a player by one WN8 color rating (e.g. yellow to green, green to blue, but not green to purple).

Forgot to mention that any lt shooting HE will simply rape you in this tank like nothing. EBRs, EVEN 90... and dont forget - arta!!! which will pen you if it hits. Even T6 arta is simply deadly for you - you have not enough speed, manouverability and armor. Also you cannot snipe from the back because the accuracy is not adequate not to mention that your penetration and shell velocity at 450 meters is a joke. You have to go mid range and get completely f-ed because you have no armor what-so-ever! Its playable in best case scenario but overall is total garbage and will give you only bad dreams! Also requirements to get marks or ace wanker are super low... 3k dmg and 1.5k assisting for the ace wanker - what a joke! Thats like average game on P44 panthera.

This tank is simply bad. - It has absolutely 0 armor like light tank - gun handling is trolling very hard (bad accuracy and shell velocity) - dpm is so-so - poor alpha dmg (compare it to borasque for example or even panther II - WTF?) - speed is not amazing 45km/h is simply bad when it has no armor - camo is not amazing... its nowhere close to light tanks The only good thing: + gun depression (which is completely useless as you have absolutely no armor on the turret) Its one of the shittiest tank at T8 imo
