'Stacks & Layers': How to Make a Ring-Bound Junk Journal Mini-Class for Beginners!

Thank you for checking out this mini-class on making a ring-bound junk journal! This is a great first journal to make if you are brand-new to making junk journals!
In this video, I am sharing my signature page building method for putting the pages together in a ring-bound journal. There are no right or wrong ways to make a junk journal, but I've heard from many people that the process seems intimidating or overwhelming and that keeps people from attempting to make one, so I created a "formula" to give you a sort of framework to simplify the process. Hopefully, after you make a few journals, you can drop the framework because you will feel more confident!
(Note: I fizzled out by the end LOL so I have a flip-through of the whole journal with all the finishing touches on it, on the video right after this one on my channel.
SUPPLIES USED:
Approximately 10 each of the following:
1. scrapbook paper (I used Echo Park Happy Easter and Echo Park Spring--both are older collections)
2. ledger or notebook paper
3. book pages
4. ephemera (playing card size or larger)
5. journaling cards/die cuts (I used ones from KB and Friends: www.etsy.com/listing/776445879/retro-easter-spring-digital-ephemera?ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1
* printable "coloring book covers" (front/back) from KB and Friends (optional): www.etsy.com/listing/782779845/printable-retro-spring-coloring-book?ref=shop_home_active_4&crt=1
* 2 pieces of scrapbook paper to mount to "coloring book: covers
* 2- 1 inch binder rings: amzn.to/3dPhE4H
* hole punch: amzn.to/2xOJxJt
* reinforcer punch: amzn.to/2X6k891
* double-sided tape or glue (for attaching cover to scrapbook paper): amzn.to/39HNgpr
* decorative items (optional: small ephemera, ribbon, fabric, etc.)

Very cute idea. Another idea for added pages is pictures that need to be colored in at a later date. I also like the idea of adding pockets. I am going to try and make my first journal next month. Gives me time to gather some supplies.

Thank You for this tutorial, it sure helps me a great deal as I'm new at this. I have done 4 journals and I've evolved in between each one as I.ve discovered different techniques along the way. I know one of them are going to my sister in Texas ;-) .Now I've got to start another one to add evevn more ideas to it LOL!!! This is really addictive! I'm thankful that I do write in a journal, so I can use them if I don't sell them 🤨

As I was watching I was getting cranky with myself LOL as I have purged many things over the years that would be perfect for junk journals. I have a question about printables could you do a video on how you open up the files and resize them for printing etc. I came here from The Vintage Goose's channel, she linked your tutorial while showing her journal. TFS and looking forward to watching more of your videos!

Hi! Welcome!! Thank you for checking out this video! I don't know if I'll be able to make a video showing how to open digital printables and resize them! 🙈 I am not very good with video yet and I think I would need special software to show my computer screen in a tutorial. I'm just not there yet! LOL I would be happy to explain the process, though! I don't resize my printables. At least the ones I've bought, I've never felt the need to! The downloading and printing part is easy, though! After you buy the printable, you can go to your purchased order and you will see a 'Download' button next to each item. Click the button and it will download. My downloads show in the bottom toolbar on my computer screen. I click on it to open it up and then save it from there to the folder on my computer where I want it. That's really all there is to it! Then you can pull up the saved images anytime and print them! If I ever get that software, I'd be happy to do a tutorial where I show my computer screen! Please let me know if you have any questions!! Thank you for stopping by!! 🤗💕💕💕💕💕

Thanks for sharing your process! I found a stack of these little storybooks in my attic so this will be great way to make these up! Just a thought....i happen to have a two hole heavy duty office punch that i had leftover from my legal consulting work from home days. They were meant to punch holes in top of letter size paper. They would be perfect on side for this application and perhaps prevent an inflammed tendon repetitive motion injury lol.... They aren't but like $7 or so

Hi, Amy! I was wondering how your store all your papers you use for your stacks. Do you cut the pages out of the books and sort them by color or leave them all together? Are they in file folders? What about your ephemera? I already have a TON of scrapbook paper, and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to organize all my new stuff I'm acquiring to junk journal.

Thank you, Deiga! I try to get the yarn vintage, but it's getting harder to find! For vintage, I find it at thrift stores or vintage shops. Sometimes I can find it on ebay. I do buy new yarn sometimes, and for that, I just search for "chunky" or "bulky" yarn. Lovecrafts.com is a good website for yarn. xoxo Amy :)

Thank you for sharing this process! I was wondering if the thinner papers tend to tear after a while of being flipped back and forth in the book, because of using binder rings??
@KittywittyPapercraft
@KittywittyPapercraft 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, I talked about that in the video! You can add reinforcers to the holes (either sticker ones or ones you punch with a reinforcer punch and add adhesive to) or line the inside edges of the pages with washi tape before punching the holes. That makes the pages less likely to tear over time, but you do have to be more careful with this kind of journal. Each type of junk journal has its pros and cons! Thank you for your comment! 🤗💕💕💕💕

Hi GG! Don't let self-doubt stop you from creating! The best thing about creating is the joy it can bring you in the process-- the finished product isnt nearly as important. And, either way, the more you keep making things, the more your skills will improve! The pompom trim I buy is from a website called sugarpinkboutique.com. And I find what makes for the best prints, is actually the paper you print on, not the printer! I like Staples brand Ultra Premium Matte Photo Paper. I find matte photo paper prints really nice color with no lines. It does cost more than regular cardstock, but makes a big difference. I don't sell journals like this one. I sell ones where I sew the pages in, but I only sell them occasionally. I see you found my Etsy shop! I saw your message and I will get back to you as soon as I can!! Thank you for your nice comments! 🤗💖💖💖💖

this helped soo much! all the videos I have watched didn't seem to have any rhyme or reason, just throwed together. I know it is a junk journal but, It needs to match. At least I think so. Do you have an email ? I have some ? about my first journal. Thanks
