Staff Shortages Cause Chaos In A&E | Casualty 24/7 | Real Responders

Staffing problems hit the department as several nurses call in sick, and young manager Tom has to use his charm to get the team to commit to working extra shifts. Paramedics are concerned about a family that was involved in a road traffic accident, and consultant Julian treats a critically ill patient with undiagnosed symptoms.
The doors of the Barnsley A&E department are open every hour of the day. The reality series allows for a peek inside the hearts and minds of the medical emergency teams, and how they deal with critical situations revolving around people's lives and illnesses. The close-knit team exchanges typical Yorkshire banter and humor to aid them with getting through their often long and tough days.

Been to the UK a few times, trust me, there are quite a few horrible ones. Don't just assume that this episode which shows the flowery side of them speaks for all of them (It's also why I really wish that foreigners would stop assuming that all cops are bad just because the media reports only on the bad ones)

I'm a RN from the USA and have enjoyed this video. The positive and upbeat attitude of the staff is fantastic. To be so dedicated to nursing that you want to work, even when ill, is honorable.

If you came into work sick in my unit you'd immediately sent home. Why would you want to possibly expose or give it to your colleagues or your patients? That is so irresponsible.

I’m a technician that worked in our largest hospital in our county for 15 years. We were always under staffed, always. It was either laugh or cry to get through your shift, don’t get me wrong, there were nights when I just wanted to hide in a corner and cry. But laughter just worked better for me, even in controlled chaos.

Laugher works period, i'm not a nurse (I hate needles so I could never do it 🤣) but i've always laughed and made jokes during stressful or sad times and it for sure helps.

I’ve been to many emergency rooms, here in the u.s., and the nurses have always been amazing. The doctors, however, treat you like you’re a test pig. They’re bedside manner is horrible. One e.r. Dr. did a horrible job stitch up my finger that I always cut off at work. He didn’t care if I was in pain or comfortable. I hate it whenever I have to go the the e.r.

I watch a lot of these and am always amazed when they say, "Would you like some tea and toast?" If That ever happened to me in the US in an ER I would be in a state of shock!

Most hospitals are understaffed, not just those in the UK but in other countries as well; doesn't help that doctors, nurses, etc are under-appreciated in the world at large. Worse yet being that doctors and nurses really aren't paid very well for the kind of the stuff they deal with.

When my son was 3, he cut his finger badly. He was given ketamine and it looked like he was dead, it was the worst part of the experience. But he didn’t remember a thing and he came around and was as happy as could be.

My own experience on ketamine… wasn’t great. I hallucinated this dizzying field of white and coloured static, kind of like gaussian noise, and apparently pulled out the NG tube they put in me while I was under it while it was still able to induce amnesia; I can’t remember doing that at all. I usually ask nurses and doctors to avoid giving me ketamine if at all possible. (Though if it’s a must, I wouldn’t protest.)

I had a heart attack at 49 , I had jaw pain for a couple of days, then a pain between my shoulder blades. Woke up with a little tightness in my chest, I thought a cold was coming on. Not until dinner time when my breathing became heavy did my husband say let’s go. I had a triple double bypass, coded 3 X, and was in a coma, with my chest open, they didn’t want to close me up in case they needed to get at my heart again, which they did. Women have a very different set of symptoms.❤

Why the DRS and nurses in Canada can't be like this! I had a very bad experience with the dr in emergency. They almost made my son disable. They were so rude. They are not here for the patient. They are there just to put in the hrs, get paid and go home. Very sad!!!

ASMR doesn’t affect all people the same way. That wouldn’t necessarily work for her; it does nothing for me. Agree with you about docs asking people if they feel well in themselves, though!

Adding to what Grace said, that means no, they couldn’t have had COVID. That didn’t bust out until December 2019, a year later. There are a lot of respiratory illnesses out there. COVID has eclipsed a lot of them in the public eye, but that doesn’t mean those other diseases don’t exist anymore. Next time you’re wondering about what someone’s respiratory symptoms might mean, consider bronchitis, strep throat, a cold, pneumonia, whooping cough, or many others, alongside COVID.

Sisters are a grade above a staff nurse and have general management responsibility for a whole ward or unit. They tend to wear the dark blue uniform whereas staff nurses where the pale blue uniforms.

The doctor casually states that "my lady might be septic"! Yeow! I didn't appreciate the nurse commenting on the back pain lady being a "yeller". I have had severe back pain....sometimes I cry out from the pain. Others do as well.

There's another comment where it's been explained already. Sister is nowadays used as an honorary title for the head nurse. It comes from times where nurses actually were nuns. Not anymore.

@@zoolucinka That’s actually not true. It’s never had anything to do with religion. Remember that the UK’s state religion is _Anglicanism,_ not Catholicism, for one. In a hospital setting, “sister” is a rank, one step above “nurse” and one step below “matron.”

Sister Jane is nice but a bit pally-wally with the Staff. In other workplaces, this could be construed as sexual assault. Not ALL people like this.

The sick nurse acts so disrespectful and superior. If she is sick, she should be the first one to know, she should stay at home, because she means a danger, a huge risk, to patients whose health is already challenged. Also, if she is the patient, she should stop controlling the situation and let the others check her health and set the diagnosis. She is also the only one, who laughs about her own jokes... Tom, hats off, you handle her behavior well. But at the same time, I feel sorry for you. She shows no respect to you, and she never will. She lacks empathy. Her behavior towards patients is fake and is for the camera. Many will believe, that she is like that, sadly. She cannot manipulate me, I know a person exactly like her. Reddits is full of stories about people like her.

I’d rather have my family with me and be in the know than allow them to languish in fear and worry about what’s happening to me. The patient gets to decide this stuff, not the doctors. If the family finds it too stressful, they can leave or not come in the first place.

I don't know how else you want to examine and treat a kid. Your goal ( both as a medical professional and a parent) is to make the kid as comfortable as possible and not walking away with trauma

Maybe it’s just me, but I find it gross that some of those nurses obviously aren’t wearing undershirts. No one wants to see chest hair or cleavage in emergency. Seems unsanitary.

Scrubs get vomited, bled, peed, and pooped on. Hospitals usually provide scrubs that employees change into..allowing you to change multiple times a day..you wouldn’t want to be wearing the same undershirt..
