Great video - getting ready to tackle this project and this breaks it down and helps me know how to tackle it!

Thank you. This is exactly how I am about to do mine. Will be 1/2 the price of the retrofit treads and looks at least as easy.

I've been extremely satisfied with mine, I really didn't see any advantage to go with the retrofit caps.

Great video. Stain the handrail the same as the treads.

I forgot to ask what kind of clear finish you used over the treads? Finish for wood floors? Thanks!
@thebeardedone19865 жыл бұрын
Hey there, what type of finish nails & gun were you using there....I have a 18g Brad Nailer, but I'm not sure that'll suffice. Thanks!
@TwoKeysStudio5 жыл бұрын
That is what I used along with the adhesive. I too was afraid that it would be insufficient, but it worked very well.
@thebeardedone19865 жыл бұрын
@@TwoKeysStudio Thank you, did the same and we nailed it (figuratively speaking)! 😊

@@thebeardedone1986 what size nail did you use?
@thebeardedone19865 жыл бұрын
@@chrisssttina I'd go no bigger than 18g tbh, anything bigger will be harder to disguise. I suggest using more construction adhesive than nails if you're going for a hardwood finish, there's one out there specifically made for reducing squeaking, etc.. Hope this helps!

This video is both helpful and practical. We are about to go after our stairs with oak treads and risers. Hard to believe what was under that carpet. Very gross!
@arpsachin24 жыл бұрын
Great job!! Any reason why you didn't replace the risers as well? I am planning on replacing carpet as well. If I were to remove the risers, would I just have to do what you did for the treads? As in, remove and install new ones? What type of treads are those?
@TwoKeysStudio4 жыл бұрын
They are oak treads from Home Depot. I didn't see the need to replace the risers. I did however, replace the risers on my stairs going down into the basement.

What should the thickness of the treads be? Just had all new wooden flooring installed by contractor. The treads have now broken twice with myself tumbling to the bottom landing. I weigh 160 pound, I've addressed the issue with the Contractor. He refuses to repair or fix as I believe the tread is too thin and wood is too cheap. He simply tells me to make sure I'm only stepping on the middle of the tread and make sure I don't step near the end of the treads. I've taken two serious tumbles down the stairs and took pictures of the injures and sent to contractor. He just hangs up on me when I call to discuss issue. How do I approach this??? Help please. Sorry so long
@TwoKeysStudio3 жыл бұрын
1" is the thickness of all the treads that I have seen, with the exception of decks. Decks are usually 2". Your stringers may be too far apart. They usually are 16". I would probably hire someone else to fix it and then send him the bill. Telling someone that they can only step on only one part of the step is just wrong.
@vikings8443 жыл бұрын
You need to do a better job researching the contractors before you hire them! Get solid,reliable references from people! This guy sounds brutal!

My treads are built into the wall so mine don’t pry up like you showed. I’m just going to cut off the nose of the old tread and glue and screw down a new entire tread on top. I’m hoping that it will strengthen my old existing steps.
@dianechoudja20354 жыл бұрын
That old treads were also looking good. Why you did not use them? The stairs look good 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
@TwoKeysStudio4 жыл бұрын
They were pine, cut sloppy, and nailed in so I didn't want to reuse them. Thank you!
@vikings8443 жыл бұрын
@@TwoKeysStudio I agree with your decision! Stain on pine usually dosent turn out to well plus the labor and mess and difficulty stain with tread against a wall isent worth it.

What size nails? What kind of glue?
@TwoKeysStudio3 жыл бұрын
I used 18 gauge brad nails that were 2" long and construction adhesive, I do not recall which brand. The adhesive does the bulk of the holding once dry. So far it has held together well.
@vikings8443 жыл бұрын
@@TwoKeysStudio Maybe it was liquid nails? Locktight maybe.
