Stam Fine looks at Star Trek Nemesis, the 10th film in the Star Trek film. Even numbered films were usually the good ones, but Nemesis is sucks air through teeth not one of those.
Update: This Review of Star Trek Nemesis was released just as Season One of Picard was released. Season One of Picard, was, a variable experience, but it had a few good points along the way, as well as some utterly dire moments. Nemesis really doesn't do anything even that well.

Nemesis has another distinction not mentioned in your review: it's the first time another Trek film attempted to ape the (far superior) climax of The Wrath of Khan by having a crew member sacrifice themself to save the ship. As stolen valor goes, it rates slightly higher than Into Darkness, but only because it plagiarizes to a far lesser degree. They both suck all the same. (Actually, the similarities don't end there. Both Stuart Baird and J.J. Abrams took pride in having no appreciation for the source material and both managed to butcher their respective movies. Well done, Paramount. At least you raked in some receipts on Abrams' films, horrible as they were.)

The title Star Trek: Nemesis had been floating around as a potential title years before this movie was even made, suggesting that the writers started with a title they liked and then wrote the script, which is completely opposite to how most writers write. If the movie has a message, it’s that clones are never as good as the original. Shinzon is inferior to Picard and B4 is inferior to Data. But the best example of this idea is the movie itself, which feels like a poor remake of Wrath of Khan with elements of Undiscovered Country thrown in. Tom Hardy is miscast as Shinzon. Other than being white, bald, and having a British accent, there’s nothing about him that reminds you of Patrick Stewart, making it impossible to believe he’s a clone of Picard. Then there’s his motivation. In TWOK, we know that Khan was once a dictator who wants revenge on Kirk for marooning him on a dead planet. But Shinzon and Picard have no history. So why is Shinzon focused on killing Picard and destroying the federation? Because he’s the villain and the action movie formula demands that he wants to kill the good guys. It’s easy to blame Stuart Baird who wasn’t familiar with Star Trek and had only directed two movies before this. But Nick Meyer wasn’t familiar with Star Trek either and had only directed one movie prior to TWOK. The difference was that Meyer was a good writer and John Logan wasn’t and IMO it’s the writers who deserve most of the blame for Nemesis.

It kind of reminds me of the way that in the Abramsverse Star Trek movies, even the third one that was okay, the villain MUST always be an obsessive bent on revenge. Why? Is this a key part of the Star Trek formula? No, not at all, it's just the premise of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and they keep thinking that because Wrath of Khan was successful, they'll succeed by replicating that.

Saw this in cinema 😑 .... it wasn't one bit fun to watch. That's worse than just being bad... It felt time to make space for other shows and generations. Even if the movie wasn't bad I would have preferred to see characters of the new shows get more air time. I think people were also just over NG at that point....

As the villain Tom Hardy was supposed to a younger Picard clone, the only problem was I never thought once that he looked enough like Picard (Patrick Steward) to pass for it. Most of the scenes on the villains ship I did not like at all and it was hard to watch. They should have gone with an all different plot with higher stakes. Maybe a Q movie with very high end effects at different locations.

I absolutely LOVE that in canon, Captain Riker of the USS Titan wanted the most DIVERSE crew, not the most CAPABLE..and there were constant problems and the ship went sub-par. Nothing ever changes, does it. MERIT and EFFORT (Enterprise) or DIVERSITY (Titan) I'm surprised it got out of spacedock!

I quite enjoyed this movie and felt it an improvement on the borefest that was Insurrection. I liked the subtle references to WOK (a figure out for revenge against the captain of the enterprise , a fan favorite sacrificing himself to stop/escape a superweapon) and the battle was the best of anything in the pre-reboot films. But it was a bit muddled. The whole buggy chase and the proto Data stuff felt like they were part of a different story idea. The choice of director certainly seems strange in hindsight

I agree. While it could have been considerably better, I didn't think Nemesis was that bad. Insurrection, on the other hand, was a massive disappointment. Perhaps because it was so inferior to First Contact, which was just fantastic.

This film and Insurrection always felt a bit off to me. It was like I should enjoy them but I didn’t. Was it the concept, the acting, the dialogue, the presentation? I mean, I enjoyed First Contact and that was just a big action flick. So was Nemesis, but I didn’t enjoy it. So what is it? It’s boring.

I stopped watching Discovery early season three. Season one of Picard was an abomination, didn't watch season two however season three of Picard generated enough good will and nostalgia in me to give Nemesis a re-watch. Maybe with how bad most recent Star Trek has been (I was hoping Strange New Worlds would be better than it was), I wondered if Nemesis would suck less. Nope.

I never bought the odd even rule. The Motion Picture is flawed, but so much more ambitious and affecting than the incredibly safe (and silly) Voyage Home. Search for Spock is far from perfect, but I'll take that over any Picard movie. Generations has its problems, but at least Picard is still somewhat like the character in the show. When we get to First Contact, they reduced him to an action hero hell bent on revenge. That's not Picard; that's movie Picard.
@BTScriviner
@BTScriviner Жыл бұрын
I didn't care for Voyage Home at all. I like Khan and Search together, and Undiscovered Country. I think Action Hero Picard works in First Conact - it's his ship, after all, and the Borg did assimilate him - but his action hero turn in Nemesis rang false and full of BS.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. I find Nemesis to be very watchable and engaging and Insurrection to be the crushing bore. While agreed that B-4 is a bad plot device and Shinzon being Picard's clone is well.... a little dopey, I think production wise it's right behind First Contact with Generations and Insurrection bringing up the rear. But that's just me and my subjective opinion. Let the opposing viewpoints fly like a phaser bank stuck on the deep fat fry setting. I still would watch Nemesis over Insurrection or, for that matter, ANY Next Gen episode from season 1, which is the equivalent of being slathered in peanut butter and nibbled to death by gerbils. Nuff Said!

I agree, but just. Nemesis was poorly executed by a director who no interest in the franchise, he was just doing job and treated it like that, Nemesis could’ve have very good if the studio let LeVar Burton a chance to direct, and also majority the film key scenes were cut Insurrection was a big budget TNG episode two parter and it was it would’ve been okay for TV episode and was quickly forgotten about when a better written two parter was shown. First Contact was best TNG movie Generation was rushed into production after the end of season 7 and the rushed script and the decision to kill Kirk on screen ruined the film.

Terrible movie. Just like Enterprise the series, this killed the franchise for 10 years until JJ saved it then now we have the awesome Discovery series. I never get why crybaby TNG fans want to go back to this shite. The fact is TNG was not actually that great. Had 2 good seasons, 6&7 But its a 80s/90s cheese fest with way too many filler episodes and a few great ones. It would of not got a second season if it came out today. People dont want to watch 24 episodes of monster of thre week anymore. Love Patrick Stewart, but he was wasted in TNG
@Talisguy
@Talisguy 2 жыл бұрын
You think 7 was one of the best seasons? Bold choice. You're very much right about one thing: it would very likely have ended at season 1 if it came out today. Season 1 of TNG was godawful, and I can't see the show surviving for long enough to get good if season 1 came out in today's TV market, where so much good content is so readily available that the field is really crowded.
