Stam Fine looks at the first two seasons of Seth Macfarlane's live action space dramedy, The Orville. It's not Star Trek, but sorta is, but it isn't, but it is. A delayed third (and possibly final season) is coming sometime (hopefully) in 2021, so in this video we look at the firsdt two seasons of a show that starts off as a Star Trek parody, but eventually blossoms into its own thing, a show that harkens back to 90's Star Trek but is still as modern as the most recent Trek series, just without the terrible storytelling. Seth Macfarlane stars as Captain Ed Mercer, captain of the Union ship, The Orville, along with his executive officer, Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), who's also his ex-wife. Also stars Penny Johnson Jerald (Dr Claire Finn), Peter Macon (Lt Commander Bortus), J Lee (Lt Commander John LaMarr), Lt Jessica Szohr (Talla Keyali), Lt Alara Kitan (Halston Sage). With appearances by Victor Gerber, Ted Danson, Norm MacDonald, and a host of former Star Trek regulars.
The Orville was originally made for the Fox Network but will now be seen on Hulu in the US. Outside of the US, The Orville is often available on Disney+ wherever that service has Star content. Fingers crossed the new series ends up there.
Video Note: This video has been finished for a long while (late 2019) awaiting the broadcast of Season 3, which has been delayed for obvious reasons. As such, the video doesn't mention Star Trek Lower Decks, an actual Star Trek comedy. It also doesn't mention Galaxy Quest, since that's not so much a Star Trek parody, but a sly look at the rivalries and insecurities of the actors who made a show like Star Trek.
The Orville: New Horizons (Season 3) premiered in June 2022
