The book is especially good, and this film stands out as the most realistic and plausible in the series without the usual exaggerated set pieces and crazy plot.

There is one major problem with the continuity of this film with the Connery films. It is that they filmed the Blofeld trilogy out of order. In "You Only Live Twice", Blofeld and Bond meet face to face. How could Bond think that he could pose as Hilary Bray with someone who should recognize him immediately?

I saw this for the first time about 20 years ago, after having seen maybe 8 or 9 of the other Bond films, and I was stunned by how good it was. Lazenby is adequate - way better than I expected - but the script is so much better than all but a handful of Bond films his performance almost doesn’t matter. Roger Moore might be a better actor but Olivier couldn’t save dreck like Octopussy. The real star of this one though is Diana Rigg. You pretty much don’t notice Lazenby when she’s on screen and that’s a great reversal from the disposable bimbos cluttering up most Bond films, especially the Moore entries. Easily one of the 5 best Bond films.

Connery was my favorite Bond but I really enjoyed Lazenby's Bond. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was a great Bond film.

Yes, this was the "hidden" Bond film in the 1980's. I remember when TBS got the rights to the franchise. They'd show them over about a two week period, one film each evening, except for OHMSS. That film was shown Sunday morning at around 9 am.

Apart from Lazenby"s spotty acting, the film is one of my favourites in the Bond series. The John Barry score is probably the best in the series.

I “met” George at a panel a few years ago. He was cool. I asked him a question about ‘The Man from Hong Kong’ and he gave a long answer which was mostly reminiscences of filming in the titular city.

I was 10 when I saw my first Bond film, Goldfinger. I instantly became a huge fan of the spy genre, but Bond was the pinnacle and I absolutely could not accept anyone other than Connery in the role. I saw OHMSS in the theater it’s opening weekend and spent the entire film critiquing Lazenby because I missed Connery. All these years later and now it is in my Top 5.

If you put Brosnan’s 42 year old face in Goldeneye next to Lazenby’s 29 year old face in this, and asked people to guess which was the younger man, nobody who didn’t already know would guess correctly.

The locations in this film were glorious and the action scenes were brilliant (with a few shonky shots). The dubbing of George Baker over Lazenby's voice is toe-curling though.

A case of staying too close to the book. The book came between Thunderball and You Only Live Twice, so it WAS the first time Bond and Blofeld met face to face. The death of Tracy was perfectly acted.

Lazenby was a great Bond, very believable emotionally, and athletic. Certainly not the worst and he would have only improved. The Director didn't fully play to his strengths either.

I really didn't like this movie for many years. In the last few years though (as I've gotten older) I've learned to appreciate it for what it is. It's a unique entry in the series and -- if you watch it from the viewpoint -- is an enjoyable experience.

I really like OHMSS and even Lazenby. I think the idea of having Bond pretending to be another person for much of the film is a smart idea for Lazenby, although it leads to some KZfaqrs pointing out Lazenby’s “bad acting” incorrectly, such as “Why is Bond nervous in the helicopter?” when it’s obvious Bond is doing a Clark Kent act. Another good one is, “Lazenby’s accent is inconsistent. “ by people not understanding that he’s dubbed when in disguise. Overall I think OHMSS is better than at least half of the Connery and Moore films, and almost all the Craig and Brosnan films. Dalton is a much better low-count Bond though.

Brilliant James Bond 007 Film OHMSS

My personal favorite in the series. It has some issues besides Lazenby. Run time is a little long and Blofeld's scheme seems more suited for 'The Man From Uncle'. If Lazenby had returned....how would the series have continued? With a linked sequel? I can't imagine Lazenby in 'Diamonds Are Forever' with Hamilton as director. So with 'OHMSS' doing relatively low box office for Bond, would a continuation of the style of his first movie happen, or would the producers try to steer a different course? And most importantly, how would audiences have responded to either option? Would Lazenby have had the discipline to learn acting properly? Ultimately, it seems the most reasonable outcome that he departed when he did.

I know this is from 2 years ago but I just staring watching your site. OHMSS is my third favorite Bond movie after From Russia With Love and Goldginger. Yeah, Lazenby is not great, but the whole movie is fantastic!

To answer your question, marrying Tracey would not make Bond a count. She became a countess when she married some Italian count. He died soon after and the title would pass on to his heir as he & Tracey did not have kids. Tracey was still able to use the title as she was the dowager countess, but could not pass it on to a new husband or any children she might have had with a new husband.

9:34 - I ended up driving Haskell Wexler around western Montana for a few hours when I was volunteering at the Hatchefest film festival around 2008 (his documentary "Who Needs Sleeps" was kind of a big deal because we'd lost a student the year before in a shoot related/sleep deprived car accident). I got to talk to him a fair bit but he couldn't hear well so it was mostly ""through" his wife as an interpreter and I spent most of the time time just answering basic Montana tour guide-type questions. (I also met Jeremy Renner and Paul Schneider that week/they were there promoting "The Assassination of Jesse James..." and the next year I hung out with Zoe Belle for literally an hour, the WHOLE TIME thinking I just recognized her from school/around town and it was only after I'd left the party that I realized I recognized her from "Deathproof"...)

The first Bond movie I ever saw.I loved it but perhaps it was just the novelty. I think Lazenby for a completely untrained actor did a pretty decent job and he later said he regretted not doing any more. If he'd getten properly trained than who knows? He might have gotten into the 'B' listers at least and at best maybe the lower end of the 'A' listers.

Both Star and Other Elements (co-stars, story, music.....) have to be _top-notch_ in order for a 007 film to impress the public and/or commentariat. For OHMSS, it has a subpar star. For other entries, other parts are subpar (i.e. cheap production sets and miscast supporting roles for "Licence").

The best story of any of the novels or films. I blame the producers. If they had spent less time worrying about how he looked and more about working on his performance, he would have been much better. I agree that he was great in the action scenes and the romantic ones, which is more than Connery and way more than Moore; but, I think he was passable in his other scenes and showed more personality than Craig. Lazenby played it the only way he knew but Craig is a trained actor and actually chose to play Bond as a depressed void. Timothy Dalton was offered the part; but, felt he was too young (and he was); but, imagine him in this caliber of a story! He suffered from scripts by committee and a lack of good villains. here, he would have had the best of both, plus Diana Rigg!

The movie has much to commend it, except Lazenby. Many people wish SC had done this but I disagree. Sean's persona would have been all wrong for the end. A peak Timothy Dalton would have been perfect. That said, Flemings choice to have Bond marry was just wrong. In the book order, YOLT comes next and the whole first half is Bond moping about losing his wife.

You start out with some good news: Sean Connery left. Even better news: George Lazenby replaced him! The belief that he was mimicking Connery is absolute rubbish (to be polite)! Was he imitating Connery’s sleepwalking in the previous film, or when he returned looking like Lazenby’s father? Lazenby brought new energy and freshness, as well as the most athleticism, to the role. No other Bond actor - especially Moore - would have done a better job in this film. Peter Hunt was the only director, beside Terence Young, who had a genuine sense of Ian Fleming’s world, and how to display it on film. From the beach fight and “This never happened to the other fellow,” to the tragic ending, I knew that James Bond was in good hands. A film is a product of its time, so the question of being “dated” is moot. “From Russia With Love” is dated politically, but remains one of the finest spy thrillers of all time. For a truly “dated” period, look no further than Moore’s films, beginning with his sartorial tastes. Wide lapels, bell bottoms, safari outfits, and sport jackets resembling curtains, among other things. The “acting” of the ‘70s leading ladies is still painful to watch! Then you have the cashing in on the then-current trends - Blaxploitation, Kung-fu, sci-fi, and an overrated remake of “You Only Live Twice.” As a grand spy adventure, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” stands alone, not just part of a series. In large measure, this is due to George Lazenby, not in spite of him. It still boggles my mind that we went from this, to the dreck that followed!

The shocking ending stunned people. 007 films were seen as spy fi fun. Bond uses cool gadgets. Bond drinks cool drinks. Bond has sex with cool women. Bond is cool. But in H.M.S.S. Bond falls in love and marries a cool chick only to have her murdered in the last scene. Too much reality.

I insist he's better than the comedian:Roger Moore

I liked George Lazenby much more than Roger Moore. Both Lazenby and Connery had that Bond "f*ck you" swagger whereas Roger Moore was just too polished. You could imagine both Lazenby and Connery sitting in a London pub, drinking beer and watching football on the tele whereas Roger Moore wouldn't be watching anything but polo at the country club and sipping some poofter drink.

As an Australian, I often wonder if Lazenby’s poorly-disguised Australian accent is as obvious to non-Australians as it is to me.

I personally prefer Lazenby to Roger Moore, who already seemed smarmy and a bit stuffy. I can't imagine Moore pulling off that final death scene in OHMSS with any conviction.

I never thought Lazenby looked the part at all; he looks kind of horse-faced to me. My whole life I've been mystified as to what anyone ever saw in him, especially as a follow-up to Connery.

Your description of why GL was a terrible Bond could be substituted verbatim as to why Brosnan was also a terrible Bond. PB always seems to be doing a half ass Bond impersonation, a poser in a tuxedo reciting dialog unconvincingly while relying on his looks to mask the fact that he's not a very good actor. I do not like Pierce Brosnan as James Bond.
