Stam Fine Reviews looks at Sam Raimi's 2004 superhero classic Spider-Man 2, a film about a young man- Peter Parker- who has the powers of a spider, then loses the powers of a spider, but then regains the powers of a spider, all while facing off against another being with eight limbs. Stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Alfred Molina, James Franco, JK Simmons, Rosemary Harris.

It was Maguire's horsing around for the movie Seabiscuit that led to, quote, "my back." But he was also said to want to be Spiderman: no more. Unlike in the cartoon theme song, wealth and fame were definitely not being ignored. The first movie had earned him $4M. Now a star, Seabiscuit won him $12M. So with the rushed production of Spiderman 2 suddenly swinging into view, he fired his long-time agent and demanded $17 Million to return to the role that made his name. Just three weeks before filming was due to start, he was still playing hardball. Sony then revealed they were in talks with Jake Gyllenhaal, who in real life was dating MJ, Kirsten Dunst, at the time, and who had been in the running for the original Spiderman, to now take over as Peter Parker for the sequel. With the leverage of Maguire's old signed contract for a possible sequel still in place, Sony also demanded medical proof of his unfitness for work. In the end though, all this behind the scenes web of threat and counter-threat resulted in Maguire netting $17.5M, plus 5% of Spiderman 2's box office gross. So, again unlike the song, "action" was anything but his only reward. Go get 'em, Tiger

The hospital horror scene is the best part of SM2. Trying to emulate and capture the essence of an actual comic. Some of those shots you could print directly into a comic book.

Excelsior indeed Stam Fine. Fantastic analysis of this excellent movie and its production machinations. Loved the alliteration section which was a perfectly pitched passage of pertinent prose. I was bitten by a radioactive spider but all it did was stop me being able to get out the bath tub.

Spider-Man 2 was the first thing I saw Bruce Campbell in after having met him at a book signing and it was easily my favorite cameo _(though I really like the maître d' from 3)_

Should do a creepy Jeff Goldblum movie like 1986's The Fly, or 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers (i.e. the good version), or really anything he's ever done, heh. Can't understand how this channel hasn't blown up the reviews are hilarious and actually make you want to watch the movie being reviewed again even if you've already seen it in the past. This channel and Jason Brant's 'So Bad Its Good' are my go-to review channels on YT.

The train scene was so perfect and yes if they did that same scene today, there would be no heart, no love for Spiderman/Peter Parker, just idiots pulling out their phones so they could get their TikTok video up as fast as they can so they can show who is under the Sidey mask so they can get a few likes.

If only SM 3 went with the Jamison astronaut storyline (Man-Wolf) instead of using and abusing the Venom story. Goth Peter Parker is still cringe.

Maguire is the best movie interpretation of Parker/Spider-Man thus far. Although I was a little underwhelmed at the time I really love the Raimi films now. Even the third one isn’t as bad as you think. Tom Holland is a terrible Parker.

I never noticed Phil La Marr was on that... if a subway is above ground, is it... was there, I was too busy thinking "Hey, it's Danny Hicks from Evil Dead 2!" Not as "huh?" as the cutaway scene to the Evil Dead Girls in Oz, Great and Powerful but more persistent, more "Is the studio paying Hicks every time he shows up, Raimi?" Raimi's chill like that and studios?" "We'll take the Classic but we draw the line at Bruce Campbell." Bruce shows up anyway... It's a thing but it's the best thing.

I honestly thought the movie wasn't as good as the first when I saw it in the theatres, but regardless, this review is making me wanna rewatch to review and report my response. (Apparently, alliteration attracts additional attempts...) Truthfully, I was mostly annoyed with the unmasking on the train - you're telling me NO ONE was gonna tell, was gonna look for him, was not going to scream "Oh my god, it's Spider-Man!! The dude I told you guys about when I was on that train that almost crashed! THAT'S THE GUY!!" when they accidentally run into him on the subway? But I digress... Movie writing will woefully wane with wisdom

I’m not a fan of this flick. Sam Raimi is great, don’t get me wrong, and his passion is on full display. But there’s two things for me that get in the way. I don’t gel with the tone, and I’m not invested in the central romance. Can’t root for two dumbasses who are totally wrong for each other. But then, I’ve seen this flick dozens of times so, the fuck do I know?

The film was very faithful to it's source material.I think the first film was better because it was fresh .None of these films compare to the first two Superman movies in terms of originality and breaking new ground.Superman was the first superhero so every character that follows is just variation on the theme .Spiderman thieves from both Batman and Superman in terms of the concept
