More complex Getz and great for itGetz always had a kind of breathiness to his playing - sublime!

Living in Chicago and then NYC ... I took in Stan as much as I could. The Civic Opera House and the Birdcage in the 60's and then Buddy's Place, Village Vanguard and Carnegie Hall in the 70's, Stamford CT in the 80's. It all began with Stan in Stockholm .... Thanks, Stan for the ride.

Hey - I was a wannabe drummer & grew up in Chicago & I used to go to the Sunday matinee shows with my older cousin starting in 1956 - the Modern Jazz Room on Randolph & State & the Blue Note on Clark & Madison. Admission was $1.50 at both clubs and you got a couple of soft drinks. Caught Getz Quartet @ the ModernJazzRoom & got their autographs but I can't remember anything for some reason. I don't remember the Birdcage but I remember the Birdhouse that was on Clark & either Division or Chicago Ave. Saw Blakey's Jazz Messengers & Coltran's band there. Did you see Getz there? When you saw Getz at the Civic was it in 1957 with JJ Johnson? Was it a JATP concert? Ever go to McKee's or the Bee Hive or the Pershing Room on the south side?

I did see Getz with JJ Johnson and I do remember Stan playing, "It never entered my mind" I believe Oscar and Ray Brown were also there. I saw the Miles Davis Quintet at the Civic Opera House a few years later also Ken Nordine with word Jazz. The Birdcage was in the loop and served only soft drinks....Cecil Payne opened for Stan that night and I actually shook Stan's hand and remember it being very soft. I went to Tuley High School and use to listen to WCFL with Sid McCoy at night playing Jazz.

MrJazzohjazz I listened to jazz on the radio too when I was a teen in Chicago, Sid McCoy on AM at night when I was riding around like teens do at night & Dick Buckly on FM when at home. After I wrote I never heard of the Birdcage I recalled that I did hear of it but thought it was a small club on Rush St. & not downtown. I went to the Sunday matinees almost every week - Basie Ellington Brubeck Adderley Krupa Miles Getz Baker JJ Johnson Rollins Roach Stitt Coltrane and have forgotten many others. I think that concert you went to at the Civic if it was in '57 it's available on CD & it is in my opinion one of the 5 greatest jazz albums ever & it does have 'It never entered my mind' a ballad featuring just Getz -the album is titled 'Stan Getz & JJ Johnson at the Opera House 1957' & if you search it here you'll probably find some tunes posted.

This Jerome Kern beauty embodies that unique Getz quality.....a powerful but soft and gentle feel....a distinct feel of strength and confidence, but at times a plaintive, pleading, almost a crying tone....but always that .light and airy feeling.....every part of his playing teems with life and human emotion .... he captured it all, like no other ....he brought out the best of that beautiful sound that can only come from a Selmer.

Stan Getz stood behind me as I was sitting at the bar in the basement of Fat Tuesday's as he waited to get the barkeep's attention to order drinks for himself and band. I told him to "please take my seat," but he declined. I asked in surprise, "You have to pay for drinks?" At which Stan expressed some disdain for the establishment. That's as close as I got to Stan Getz. He had his hand on my chair and I was approximately two to three feet from eye to eye, ha. He was a God on tenor. To me Stan's best album was his collaboration with Abbey Lincoln on "You Gotta Pay The Band" that highlighted her hit "Bird Alone". It had to be his last or near last album recorded. Btw, I always considered that album a Masterpiece. RIP dear brother. ciao.

A 8'09 George Mraz plays E on Em75b while Stan plays lydian Eb. Le frottement E/Eb est heureusement très fugace. Ce genre de surprise ajoute du piment à l'impro !

Thanks Roland ! The b5 (Eb) is the sub for A (the 5th),in the key of D minor which this tune is usually played.I'm always afraid to discuss such depths.

Cover art: ‘Stan Get(z) Blue’ by Toronto artist Ms Aiko Suzuki. Rec’d for Black-Hawk Records in Menlo Park, CA at Music Annex Recording Studios - 09 MAR 1986. Certain early CD copies (1988?) may have a seventh track, Just Friends (John Klenner, Sam M. Lewis); all copies I’ve seen lack this track. Anyone seen one? Outstanding post! Thank you. :I: Finkänslig ~ 10MAY`12

About this music, you've said it so well! Yes, I saw a Voyage CD offered up online some time back; its track listing showed the Just Friends track (last). Michael Fitzgerald's online Kenny Barron Discography mentions Just Friends on some early Voyage CDs. Some day... :I:
