Exploring Standedge Tunnel. The Longest, Highest, Deepest Canal Tunnel in the UK as we travel the length of the tunnel on our narrowboat. Situated on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, Standedge Tunnel links Marsden in West Yorkshire with Diggle in Greater Manchester, Lancashire. Colin explores the dark, mysterious, disused railway tunnels that run alongside the canal tunnel and ventures high up onto the moors to check out a ventilation shaft, hundreds of feet overhead from the canal. With a reputation for damaging boats passing through it, can we make it through without incident?
You can now paddle the tunnel by canoe:

What an absolutely stunning video. So glad that Colin enjoyed it and congratulations to Shaun for steering through, your concentration must have been spot on. Now for the interesting bit, or maybe not, back in the mid 1960s I was a member and for a short while Secretary of the Dudley Canal Tunnel Preservation Society, forerunner of the Dudley Canal Trust, a group of Canal enthusiasts who campaigned to keep the tunnel open when it was threatened with closure. It was of course at that time the longest and deepest navigable tunnel on the network as Standedge was officially closed. One of the ways in which we raised funds was to take the public on trips through the tunnel using an un-powered BCN dayboat and I have many memories of legging the boat through The crew usually took it in turns but on more that one occasion I legged solo for all 3172 yards quire a feat I can tell you. Hope you find these fact interesting keep the videos coming.

You guy's out did yourselves this time, that was without a doubt one of the most interesting you tube videos you've done. I wounder if you were to turn your engine off and just sit and listen. If you could hear the pounding of the drills from hundreds of years ago. What a fabulous experience that must have been, I'm jealous. I've moved my visit to your incredible country up a few notches in my bucket list. Thank you both. Love you guys.

Aww, thanks, Dean! It was an amazing few days (filmed it over about a week). I'd love to go back and explore more of it. Totally fascinating. When I was in the disused railway tunnel it was pitch black. I couldn't see my hand in front of my face, and cold too, maybe 6c (20c outside).

Crossing the Ribble Link, scary . . . this tunnel, scary! My hands were fists watching and my stomach is in a knot . . . and I just sat and watched in safety! Steering was miraculous! I am trying to imagine how they legged through the wider s bend . . . probably in the dark . . and did not fall off. I do not want to imaging falling off in the dark and with the steam from the trains in virtually no light in 1900! Wow!

I live very close to tunnel end in Marsden and I used to walk through the disused tunnels with my mates when we were kids. It was always touch and go whether or not our torches would last long enough for the walk through the tunnel and back. Brought back some good memories seeing this. If you're ever back up this neck of the woods again I'd love to treat you both to a few pints in the local, you've kept me entertained through this lockdown and it would be the least I could do to get you a few pints of real, local, Yorkshire ale.

You ask, Well Spiders, The whole roof of the Tunnel Is dripping with them. The First boat will get covered leaving You without hardly any when You emerge on the other side. Lol. Keep going and Keep blogging It's nice to hear the history of a place. We all live on this Island pass by places and never go In. And Yet the rest of the World Pay Thousands to come see It all.

Only 917 comments. Thank you for that brilliant piece of history.hard to imagine all of those tunnels beneath the mountains. Harder still to imagine the vision of the engineers and relevant companies hundreds of years ago. Imagine the fortitude and skill the underground workers had to construct travel services still in use 200 years later. There is a proud and elegant but practical beauty in it all. I wonder what the people would say if it were possible to bring them back to see the structures they created 200 years ago. You had some brilliant vlogs and this one is up with your best!

Won't be long and you can show Mr Professional, David Johns, @CruisingTheCut, how to do a Vlog. It was just so fascinating seeing all the structures inside the tunnel, the brickwork, the patched walls, even the Checkpoint. By the way, did you suggest that a C&RT person travelled with you? I think you said it was for a 'Chaperone' to report that you had made it safely so far? Guys, you have outdone yourself! 90 minutes in a tunnel is scary. 4 hours legging it is incredible - life was hard. The rough hewn rock reminds me of cycling through the Falkirk tunnel on the Edinburgh Union Canal, which is lit with some funky coloured lighting. Fascinating and truly compelling documentary-style vlog this week guys! While Colin was bravely investigating the dark, dank and rather scary disused tunnel, can we assume that Shaun and Dillon were, more sensibly, have a pot of tea and eating cake? 😜 Great job, as always.

Oh my gosh , I love your vlogs. I’m British, born in Horwich, north of Manchester but emigrated to Canada as a child. I just found your KZfaq channel plus your FB and Instagram. So….I’m going to be dreaming of canal boats tonight as I watched from 1 to 69 so far today. I just had foot surgery so was looking for something interesting to watch on KZfaq. My husband and I always talked about renting a canal boat for a holiday but I was a bit stressed about the whole thing. I have learned so much. I just love how natural, honest and funny you both are! Cheers and I’m going to continue watching. xoxo Carole

That bit about the other tunnels at the beginning really got me. Don't know if I'll ever go through the Standedge Tunnel. Great VLOG. I read how original campaigners who wanted to prove there was still a possibility of getting through got stuck and had to take their rubbing bands off their boat ( a wee cruiser ) and ram their way through.... Fascinating, thanks Foxes. And all built by back breaking, hand labor. Amazing. I don't think I'd even like to go through the tunnel today, never mind building it, or spending three hours down there, just going through it would. be more than enough for me. I remember steam engines; and the thought of being trapped underground and breathing in that hot, sooty steam as a train thundered past. OMG!! And so that's where the phrase "legging it" comes from to describe someone running away.
