Drafting OG ravnica block back in the day into lorwyn and time spiral blocks were some incredibly nostalgic moments. My friends and I used to buy a box and draft it amongst us, usually 6 player team drafts. The limited formats were amazing back then too. I've been collecting vintage magic again ever since LOTR came out and got me back into it (since playing back in the 90's). I think the reason why vintage magic seems to be stagnating in sales is because older collectors don't want to sell for less than top prices. I look at the eBay auctions and cards tend to be overpriced and not moving. I've had vintage cards in my watchlist for months that aren't selling, but the sellers don't want to lower the price on them.

My walk in closet has been converted into a mini card store. It's where I keep ALL of my massive Vintage cards collections, mostly WOTC Base Set Pokemon. I have been recently buying MTG and also WOTC Harry Potter. I mostly have been collecting Pokemon for over 25 years, but man, the smell in the closet just teleports me back into a Shinder's Store. I feel like it's 1999 all over again, haha. The smell of vintage cards is truly intoxicating. Probably what also helps boost the smell, is newspapers from the 90's, automotive magazines from the early 2000's, and other printed cardboard and paper stuffs. Sorry for the long response, it's just, the smell is just so... It's simply one of life's greatest scents. People look at me funny at my LGS, when I smell and can pin point the bulk vintage singles, stuffed in a box, that cost nickels and quarters each.

This reminds me of a time when the game was young, exciting, and growing. A time when meta decks were rumors and whispers. A time when you would enter a tournament and be enchanted by llanowar Elves, Serra Angels, Hypnotic Specters, Black Knights/White Knights. Lightning Bolts crackled and Kird Apes abounded. Strip Mine/Black Vises could break your heart. Double Dark Ritual on turn one was thrilling. Mishra's Factories working hard for many players. While there were decks to be copied many decks were original or gave a new look to an established idea. A time when the only dragon ruling the sky was the mighty Shivan Dragon. When Instants were slower than Interrupts. A time when the creators and developers of the game cared about the player experience and the long term health of the game. A time when a rare was special enough - no need for foiling, etching, dancing dolphins, etc. I know times have changed but it is nice to think back!

So I started playing magic in 2014 during core 2015 when I was in high school. I think this old stuff is super cool, and I have accumulated a small position of it myself, but have no nostalgia for it. I think magic is kinda going through an identity crisis right now, nobody really knows what magic is supposed to be. I firmly believe once magic finds its footing again the older stuff will fire up newer fans like it did with me once upon a time.

To me there is a lot of joy watching your videos as someone who started playing in the 90s. I also value your wisdom on prices coming from finance. I will say there is a sadness to me as well and I'm not trying to rant, but I wanted to get back into Magic to PLAY a while back as the community was fun to me. COVID of course hurt it but there was still a chance. I didn't want to play new, I wanted to try Legacy and maybe even Vintage, whether cube or even fun at a shop printing proxies. The fact of the reserve list and the inability of any real person to financially play with or even find duals and things just for the experience is impossible. Magic is blessed and cursed on the idea that is art and a game and money. An new generation is rising and I hope they enjoy the journey. I find it hard to think that many of us want to play with a mox but it's like shuffling Van Gogh. Keep making videos you are fun to watch.

Story time... I will try to keep it short. I was recently invited to a co-worker's house for some casual Commander. I have been completely out of touch with Magic since the introduction of Universes Beyond, so much so that I no longer frequent my (once) LGS for casual commander games, and I haven't thought about Standard since Kaladesh. I show up with my Heavenly Inferno pre-con, completely unmodified, circa 2011, the epitome of Commander. I spent the night facing off against cards all printed in the last few years, loads of stuff that is still standard legal (I think), piles of unreadable Secret Lair cards, and countless full-art lands that aren't worth the card stock they are printed on. Against insurmountable odds, Kaalia got it done. I won 2 out of 3 games and the little Kaalia pre-con from 13 years ago is still the "BS broken deck" at the table. I talked "back in the day" deck tech with some folks and I took something away from the night; the current generation of Magic players *IS* interested in (some) older cards, they just haven't been introduced to them yet.

The guy working there said, "it's a card game", and I just dismissed it and never inquired further because he didn't care, so neither did I. Wish he was a different guy who wanted to get me into the game instead.

The vintage market consists of people who already have the product they want. The younger generation have no interest in the inflated prices the investors have created and the nostalgia bump these products get doesn't exist for people who weren't there at the time. Vintage magic sets are pretty much just tokens passed around between speculators.

Also, creating an environment of "Hey, nobody is buying these products, the market's dead (but I'll buy it from you at 76%)" is some brass-ass balls. Unregulated markets ftw.

Truthfully, I think the problem with these boxes is that the expected open value is way too low. Even opening a box of original Zendikar, only yields maybe an average of $200-250 worth of cards unless you somehow manage to pull a foil fetch land (which are still only $90-100 for the scalding tarn foil). With the value of cards being based almost completely on utility, theres no room for growth in the collectors base and the collectors base will erode. Theres no reason Zendikar boxes should be $1000 after 15 years. They should be pushing $4000-5000 but they just can’t. Between Wizards negligence with not extending the reserved list past Urza’s Destiny, over printing passed demand, and the player base being unmotivated to engage in collecting rare chase cards because “they’re too expensive”, the growth for vintage magic is going to take a long time to really come to fruition. Sealed is a great investment, but theres too much of a gamble with sealed boxes. Foil pull rates are insanely low in vintage product. By comparison, vintage Pokemon will outpace Magic and make leaps and bounds beyond, not only because the pull rates for chase cards are not near impossible, but because it connects deeply with younger generations and gives them great memories that they will one day call nostalgic artifacts from a time that brings happiness and joy into their hearts. I hope in 10 years, that mindset changes and people realize just how truly special, amazing and rare vintage foils are and it brings the collectors of Magic back together like the old days. Just some food for thought, imagine what the price of a foil polluted delta from onslaught would be, if polluted delta was on the reserved list. And how players, investors and collectors alike would be lining up to buy them. Just a thought.

I'm still convinced that they did Magic 30 to purposely toss some water on the reserved list market. My own purchasing seems to have leaned more into new product vs old product... not really on purpose, but mostly because my wallet is being killed by new product. I am starting to back off on new and going back to old though. If that ends up being a more common trend, I can see reserved list items starting to heat up again as people burn out on new product and overpriced collector boxes.

One day you need to peek at my Base set collection or buy it. To me there is zero possibility sealed or any physical product goes down long term. Ripping will never get boring and scarcity increases daily.

One thing that people cant argue is that magic essentially started TCG's. At least it was the first one widely adopted. The history and impact magic had will arguably never be forgotten. And I don't see TCG's ever going away at least not in my life time. Now in terms of how people will collect and value that history is debatable. I think vintage baseball and football cards could be a good reference point. There is underlying and long term value based on scarcity/rarity, history and demand. I see magic eventually falling into this same assessment. Personally I want a piece of magics history but I know it will cost me a pretty penny. Should I wait? The question/assessment then becomes, 1. Are most people emotionally attached to the cards/boxes that they own or do they just see it as an investment? 2. Are most people waiting for prices to go up so that they can sell? 3. If prices go down will people hold because they would rather have the cards or capitulate because they don't care? For some people they could even start feeling that they have accumulated too much. They over exposed themselves in their own hobby. and 4. Are buyers/collectors still excited to pick up vintage magic when they feel the price is right? I know I am. Also how many NEW buyers are there realistically? My worry is that there is not enough long term collectors and new buyers who feel the need to collect vintage magic especially at the current price point. Cheers!

I started playing during revised, back when the big hits were shivan, force of nature and lord of the pit, nobody cared about duel lands 😂 and like a dummy I sold off all my old cards after I got tired of it. I’m currently trying to put together a full revised set. Love the old magic.

What´s the point of investing in sealed products, when you never or anyone else go to open it ?? The only going reason for this, is the possibility of rising in price, but thats not an interrest in magic, you can do this with all other things. Lastly a sealed box , never intended to be open, is useless !! What can you do with this box ??

Every sealed product will eventually be opened by someone with a passion for the game. It's its final fate. I'd buy boxes like these myself, but I would be that guy.

Because it's cool to have a sealed box of it on your shelf? Like a statue. You don't do anything with just find it cool been there. Not that it's ever gonna happen but I would love to have a room with a cased wall display of all the sealed boxes of all MTG sets.

I still regularly buy Golden and Silver era MTG sealed boxes, at least weekly. Last month I bought a box of Antiquities, and I have 4 of them now. This is the time to buy, certainly not when the market is hot, and it will be again because all collectibles like this run in cycles.
