Often I am asked if a standpipe is needed in a ram pump setup. There are typically only two reasons to use a standpipe. The first reason is to reduce the length of the drive pipe. This is done by installing a supply line and stand pipe to bring the head pressure closer to the pump. Next reason to install a standpipe is if you already have larger pipe that you want to use in your ram pump setup. The larger pipe acts as the supply line and the stand pipe is what allows you to reduce down to the smaller pipe to connect to the pump.
So if you are asking Do I need a stand pipe for the ram pump? This is the video for you.

That is a nice demonstration Seth. It should be mentioned that the ideal distance from pump to atmosphere is dependent upon the velocity of the back pressure wave in the pipe. If the pressure wave is released at the standpipe before the next cycle of the pump, the water flowing through the drive pipe wont have to fight the pressure wave . A very general rule of thumb is to have the distance from the pump to the nearest atmosphere opening (stand pipe) about a ten to one ratio. For example, if the head is 5', the drive pipe should be 50'. Of course, the distance to the water source can be just about any length but you need the stand pipe for the system to be efficient.

I think adding a stand pipe to a silt filter bucket makes sense. Basically, slow the flow down enough for the silt to fall out, but also keeping the head pressure. Maybe make a cyclone filter, like the ones for sawdust collectors. Actually, that might mix things up too much.

Would using a standpipe allow you to use something like garden hose to fill the standpipe. I know one wants to have as rigid pipe as practical for your drive pipe - between the source and pump. If I am understanding the stand pipe benefits correctly, the rigidity of the pipe upstream of the stand point is not so important.

Could you use a 2 ft section of 3" PVC as a stand pipe instead? I'm assuming it would hold a similar volume as a 6 ft section of 1" pipe.

What is the shortest drive pipe? Could you put a bucket on top of the stand pipe? What if you load that stand pipe with a waste valve?

I thought you mentioned lack of head pressure and needing better lift capacity for higher pumping needs as a reason for a stand pipe.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 2 жыл бұрын
Yes if it requires your drive pipe to be longer than 100' to gain the head pressure the stand pipe is needed. The main thing is cycle time.

have you tried different sizes on the ram pumps pressure tank? And perhaps different shapes to?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. There is a point where larger tanks just take longer to prime initially. Larger does not make a difference after a point.

Can you make a 3/4” or 1” ram pump? Supply pipe same size as pump all the way to the source.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 2 жыл бұрын
As long as the pipe is big enough to feed the needed gpm to the two different pump sizes yes you can have supply pipe the same. The Drive needs to match the size of the ram pump waste valve.

Bought one of your 1/2" pumps. I havent got it cycling yet but darnit I will soon. Idea about the standpipe maybe you have thoughts. Relating to a sealed intake that isn't open to air and pressurized similar to trying to cycle a pump with tap pressure keeping valve sealed and preventing pump from cycling. Do you think a standpipe could compensate for this issue? I know having the release of pressure to air is important for drive/supply to be able to cycle the pump with the pressure wave created but couldn't that issue with too much line pressure be compensated in theory with a stand pipe? I appreciate your time and efforts. Inspiration move me brightly. 🎼🎵🎶🎵

If you were to pressurize the line yet have an open standpipe I feel like the water would be a geyser out the top of that standpipe. Not having the line pressurized is what allows the pressure wave to go up the drive pipe and then fall down gathering speed to slam the waste valve closed.

That is what I was wondering. Is a stand pipe required to neck down to a smaller size.

The inertia of the water in the drive pipe is what causes the pressure spike that pumps water out the delivery side above the supply height. Having that last section into the pump sized to match the waste valve appears to be optimum, so if the total is not too long and the last section is a match, it will probably work without a stand pipe.

I have an experiment for you to try!!! Pressure = density of fluid x acceleration of gravity x area of internal pipe x height of fluid x pipe resistance… the water density and gravity aren’t changing anytime soon, so remove them from the equation. Hypothetically, you could feed five 3” pipes into one 3/8” inch stand pipe using Y connections and it would multiply the falling water pressure by a factor of 130! (Internal Traverse area ((35.35 x 5)/0.196) 3 feet of falling pressure would be enough to convert to 390ft of 3/8” falling water pressure!!! After you apply your resistance coefficient according to your pipe type and size, you should get a very close approximation of your hypothetical max pressure. This would be an excellent solution to the individuals who do may not have a lot of falling water pressure or property area!
@kendelmcnew
@kendelmcnew 2 жыл бұрын
Only catch is, you’ll have to find a solution to create a tank at the top of the stand pipe with a fairly strong support base… unless you want 390 ft of pipe shooting into the air!

The ideal cycle time on a pump is once per second. when the pump cycles too fast the pressure wave does not have sufficient time to make it all the way up to the top of the head pressure and back. My example was merely showing that that cycle time does change based on pipe length. If you tried to run this same pump on 300' of drive pipe the pump would likely not cycle. A standpipe would be required.
