Stanley 199 Utility Knife Restoration

I picked up this old Stanley 199 utility knife from the car boot sale for £1 the other Sunday. It is the same as the one owned by my late father, he got his in the late 1950s or early 60s as I can remember it as a little lad.
I didn't use any power tools in this renovation at all only manual labour, I am very pleased by the way it came out too. The previous owner must have used it as a hammer at some point as the end of the handle was damaged, something I managed to repair.

That's not a saw blade it's a drywall blade for cutting drywall.

Excellent restoration. Used the 199 for years on the job( commercial carpenter). Never had anything that looked that good🤙

I have a lovely blue vintage made in England 199, same exact casting as the one you modded. I am not a collector or anything, it was jut cheaper than a brand new 199 on ebay!!! And much better quality.

Nice restoration, I'm impressed the alloy went back into shape with a light hammering. Try the spongy things ladies use on their nails, they have different colours for each grade of sanding/polishing. I use them for polishing tools, screw heads, e.t.c., they work great on brass, aluminium, even stainless steel.

The blade is a keyhole saw for drywall that’s probably why you had a struggle with the wood. But still pretty cool I didn’t know they made keyhole saw attachments for the utility knife

Picked up two of these at a used tool market. They feel great in the hand. However, I now know they wear out! The small blade retaining nib and the border edges wear because they're soft alloy and the blade is the opposite of soft alloy. So the blade moves a lot. Bummer.

I have one of these in a similar condition from my late uncle and will probably restore it too, however the truth is in today's throw away society it is way, way cheaper to simply throw these things away and buy a new one, with saw blades for less than a tenner.
