I'll never forget my first Stanley utility knife because it was my first tool and because of how I found it. Me and dad were eating lunch watching the planes land and launch at the MSP airport. I looked down and found it in the sandy soil right by the car door. I still have it to this day.

Nice collection I am a retired carpet and Lino layer I carried a 199/ 299 Stanley in my pouch for 35 years we would tighten the screw with our thumb nail for making tool-less blade changes same with our Bloody Mary knives long before tool-less knifes were made. We always had a long Lino knife stone near. We also kept a small piece of an old Lino stone in our back pocket to resharpen our utility knifes.

Oddly enough I just took my 10 year old Stanley hook knife that I used for roofing and cleaned it up to use for gutting deer. Mine was made in England. I love old tools. A little WD40 and some elbow grease and a new blade and they're back to work.

I still use mine and it's 20 years old. Painted mine when I first got it with Rustolium paint. So it's never rusted. Someone gave me a Milwaukee but it only holds one blade. The Stanley holds a dozen or so blades so that's why I prefer it. Your project came out good. I like the yellow and red. Looks a lot like a pistol grip.

Scout, you turned into a vampire. My buddy Bill "If-Its-Free-It's-For-Me" Majer thought he had struck gold when they junked a 120 gal. air compressor at work. All it needed was a new motor! We got it squared away and all was fine until the first night that it recharged itself. We had to put it against the wall the garage shared with his bedroom. Well, after about an hour of running, his wife was freaking out.

Speaking of the Stanley 199, I inherited a 199 from my mother. It is a "Goldblatt 199". Except for the molded-in name, it is a Stanley knife. According to her, it was a matte knife. As an artist, she used it to cut matte board for mounts. It had lots of scratches when I got it, but I made a cardboard sheath for it - and eventually, after a few years, the cardboard has worn the scratches away. It now lives in a tray with the other mail processing tools.

Great job on the Stanley No199. I have one and now I know how to clean it up without destroying it. I also reviewed your vid on the miniature adjustable wrenches. I actually carried one in my pocket to adjust some parts of elevator door mechanisms and know of a few other techs who did the same. The info on the Bernard parallel jaw pliers was also much appreciated. My dad was in WWII and Korea in a heavy weapons company and the machine gunners would have had those in the service kits. Now I know where he probably got them. DBH ps, here's to us that stay up late!

I was taught if you use the sam tools on aluminum and steel you will always have galvanic corrosion.. when Ford started putting aluminum hoods on they're trucks I did a repair on mine..and painted it....looked great but about a year later the paint started bubbling in the spot where I made the repair. I found out it was because I used the same grinding pad I had used on steel.

It's 2.15am Christmas Eve here in England and I'm watching a guy 3000 miles away talking about Stanley knives. I recently showed my wife my well-worn Stanley 10-015 knife given new to me by my Dad when I left home for art college 30 years ago. I tried to explain that it is my favourite Stanley knife. I like the older knife. The way it looks catches my eye. I never had to work nights very much. But when I was working at the hospital once in a while I would volunteer to work 2nd or 3rd shift to help out. It would about kill me. I couldn't go to sleep early to get ready. My family was always good and kept quiet. I would just stay up and go without. That seamed the only way for me to do it. Problem was sometimes it would be for a week at a time. I don't know how you guys would do it. Now I don't go to bed till about 2 am because of my health issues. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

Glen- I taught all the new guys how to adapt to nights... I told them you get 8 hours work, 8 hours play and 8 hours sleep... This is your livelihood so don't try to work nights and be up days it won't work.. Put cardboard over the windows and get an AC unit... Sleep 8 hours... They really appreciated it...

I use the Tamiya paint building models. A much better and much cheaper thinner is common rubbing alcohol (if you can even find it). Should dry faster and fill in smaller cracks using the isopropyl. It will also remove it from the lettering. Tamiya, themselves; even says it is OK to use.

I love your work on these 199s. In case it matters, they are not aluminium; at least, not much in more recent years, if ever. The ones I have worked on are a high zinc (+90%) alloy. Your advice still applies for grinding and polishing, though they are not as soft as aluminium. I am going to do some work on some older ones, which might be made of other metals.

I know what you mean about sleeping. Before retiring I got up every morning for 34 years at 4.58am in order to catch the first train of the day. I have been retired now for nine years and you guessed, every day I wake up at 4.58am but now I can roll over and get another hours shut eye. The strange time was due to the alarm going off at 5.00am and I would be in my wife's bad books if it woke her at that time so I just woke up 2 minutes before (self preservation !!!) and switched off the alarm. The 199s look great but I noticed the older ones had a different tip to the modern ones, could you line them up to show the full evolution?. Fantastic video and a high spot of the day, thank you.
