Cody, the first two planes are bench planes (bevel down) and the second 2 are block planes (bevel up). I own the Stanley 65 block plane and after restoration it makes a fine tool. That style lever cap is called a knuckle joint cap and that plane is a low angle plane particularly good at end grain, but a good all-around tool. The smaller plane is a Stanley 102 and it good for chamfering work. Enjoy the 65 it will become the one you reach for most frequently.

My dad has a really old stanley we were taking a look at today and I looked up the patent and it looks like its from around 1895 as far as I can tell. Going to be restoring it soon, thanks WS.

I don't mind if you don't use the drill. It was in rough shape and would be expensive to restore but I hope you enjoy the planes. Thanks cody

Restore that smallest block plane because it looks like a low angle plane Much better for cross grain planeing and since its so light it makes a good shopp apron plane for chamfering sharp edges after ripping or cross cutting Likd those whiskers left over from a cut off When I was makeing parts in a stair building shop in My apron I carryed a low angle block plane , a Starett 4" calibers made from wood and brass it incermints were mark in 64ths good enough for wood working I also had a 4" square and a bic black ink stick pen The black ink was much easyer to see than a pencil mark on Red Oak and a 1/2" by 12' tape measure Carrying these tools in a shop apron saved a lot walking back and forth

I have the same hand plane. It was at the bottom of a homemade carpenters tool chest along with a beautiful Stanley No 4 and a few other tools. I love the No 65. It's built like a tank. I still have to restore it though.

I found a drill almost like that in some old tools at my scrap yard. the only difference is mine has two small gears one is at the base of the handle and the other is at the bottom like yours. Bit go in the handle to. It is very cool tool. Thanks for the videos.

I'm sure someone must have told you this but I'll say it just in case, to protect the edge on a planes blade they are designed to be laid on their side when not in use, that way you're not resting the tool on its cutting edge which is the lowest part of the base. Regards

The No 65 is a block plane, the No 4 is a smoothing plane, or finishing plane, and the No5 is a Jackplane, block plane's are mostly for end grain, and they wasn't chromed they were nickel plated .

Ooooh! Knucklecap. Sweet. The mouth adjuster lever arm was upside down when you took it out of the box. It should be pointed up. If you want to know more about the Stanley planes, go to Stanley Blood and Gore. It will help.

You need to give the electrolysis tank another try. Don't put a lot of items in at once. Electrolysis rust removal works by line of sight. Electrolysis will remove only the rust and will stop working when the rust is gone. That blasting cabinet will remove some of the good metal.

I am very impressed with the drill because my dad had one just like it. I know for a fact that the bent shaft can be straightened because when this boy miss treated my dad's drill and bent it. My dad took the drill apart and fixed it and I was banned from using Dad's tools for what seemed like forever.

I'm almost positive that electro-metal plating creates (hazardous?) chemical waste that becomes a disposal issue. I don't know about the reverse process, but be careful of how you handle that if you ever try it.

The more the variety of tools, the more options you have for any application. I'm such a tool nut but one should stick to whatever tools will be used at least periodically but not necessarily just to "have", I don't really believe in that anymore. I used to get a real kick out of some of the wealthy guys who buy themselves every tool under the sun and never use any of them and if they do they haven't a clue as to how. And then I would have to bite my tongue asking God "why does that guy have so many good tools and I don't Lord? He doesn't even know how to use them or really want them".

Is it worth carving a new vertical wooden handle for a plane if a broken handle is the only thing wrong? Or better to just be on the lookout for a plane in better condition? A complicated carving like that is well above my skill level. I foresee 3-4 iterations and many hours that I just don't have to spare right now.

what is the best way to get ahold of you... i think the comments can be ineffective. I tried posting some info on electrolysis for you when you posted your last vid on it, and I'm not sure you got it. Electrolysis can be really effective, even with the set up you had [with a few modifications].

better than football? blasphemous, un-American hate speech! oh yea, the unmarked plane looks like it may have been a knock off of a stanely plane. they could be from around the same time period which (judging by the chrome flaking) looks a lot like the 60s. not terribly old planes but well used. copying the styling of tools, home appliances and cars was pretty common during that period too.
