I have never heard that third stanza verse. The third stanza with which I am familiar goes: "And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight and the gloom of the grave, And the star spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave." I like the one they did though. It would make a good substitution for the official one in light of the fact that we stopped singing it during the world wars to avoid insulting Great Britain who had become our ally at that time.

Regarding the controversy about the 3rd verse, this is from a Wikipedia article about the song. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star-Spangled_Banner "Absent elaboration by Francis Scott Key prior to his death in 1843, some have speculated more recently about the meaning of phrases or verses, particularly the phrase "the hireling and slave" from the third stanza. According to British historian Robin Blackburn, the phrase allude to the thousands of ex-slaves in the British ranks organized as the Corps of Colonial Marines, who had been liberated by the British and demanded to be placed in the battle line "where they might expect to meet their former masters."[10] Mark Clague, a professor of musicology at the University of Michigan, argues that the "middle two verses of Key's lyric vilify the British enemy in the War of 1812" and "in no way glorifies or celebrates slavery."[11] Clague writes that "For Key ... the British mercenaries were scoundrels and the Colonial Marines were traitors who threatened to spark a national insurrection."[11] This harshly anti-British nature of Verse 3 led to its omission in sheet music in World War I, when the British and the U.S. were allies.[11] Responding to the assertion of writer Jon Schwarz of The Intercept that the song is a "celebration of slavery,"[12] Clague said that: "The reference to slaves is about the use and in some sense the manipulation, of black Americans to fight for the British, with the promise of freedom. The American forces included African-Americans as well as whites. The term 'freemen,' whose heroism is celebrated in the fourth stanza, would have encompassed both."[13] Others suggest that "Key may have intended the phrase as a reference to the British Navy's practice of impressment (kidnapping sailors and forcing them to fight in defense of the crown), or as a semi-metaphorical slap at the British invading force as a whole (which also included a large number of mercenaries)."[14]"

So happy to have found that third stanza performed. It was written by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1861, relating to the start of the Civil War. Excellent performance! I have no patience for the modern foolishness that wants to expunge the original third stanza, "No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave" They don't realize that Key was mocking the British soldiers who had just been defeated.

Furthermore, 7 states seceded BEFORE Lincoln took office, and thus before income taxes were imposed.

I don't like how they changed the third verse. It's not even racist. This song was written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812. It is just talking about how in the War of 1812 the British used German Hessians and kidnapped American seamen and forced them to work on British man of war ships, which was called impressment. The war of 1812 had nothing to do with slavery; it was because the British would not surrender their western forts as promised in the Treaty of Paris. There was a long conflict and eventually, the British started to block the U.S. form trading with them. The British also stopped American ships and forced the American seamen to work for them, like I stated earlier.

***** Now imagine the pop Stars that currently butcher the 1st stanza trying to sing the other 3. Also the third Stanza depending what version you look, at changes depending on the year you look at it. In 1814 the third Stanza read as: And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. However in this version it does not. So which version should they sing?

Brian Hennessy the third verse of the U.S. National anthem was considered racist due to the usage of the word “slave” in it. In reality it isn’t racist at all, and it even states that no slave deserved the horrible living conditions of one. It also mentions how American prisoners were oftentimes used as if they were slaves on British ships, due to a lack of hands in the Royal Navy. Basically American prisoners were used to clean the ship and all that nice stuff, which makes the phrase “Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution” make actual sense. Though, many people can’t seem to wrap the fact that the 3rd verse recognizes that no slave deserved the harsh conditions they had back in 1814, when the Star Spangled Banner was originally made.

I think what people need to understand is that if a poem/song was written many years ago under completely different circumstances, obviously the parts that are inappropriate today will be left out, and that does not take away from the beauty of the National Anthem as we know it today, and the story, the main story, about the flag still standing and the English defeated, and Americans standing up for themselves and therefore remaining/gaining freedom is something we also now in 2016 can relate to and always will be able to relate to. Sure, if you want to keep digging after negativity from the past, it is not a nice story, but for heaven's sake, it's the same as saying the the German people born today are all nazis because of the bad doings years ago by Hitler. Be positive, look ahead and not back at things we cannot change, and remember that our flag represents bravery and commitment, for all Americans, and I mean ALL Americans, because even alluding to races and skin colors is meaningless since this country is populated with people with backgrounds of every country in the world. What we also need to remember is that there are natives of this country, who were here first, before any of us others, so now that it is at it is, let's live in peace and pride and treat each other with respect, looking forward and not backwards!

You know, I love this song... In it's entirety... *ALL* it's verses... And to those complaining about those parts that refer to "slaves"... The term "slave" has been taken so far out of context... Slave: (verb); to slave; to serve; ex: "I slaved all day in the kitchen to make this meal" Slave: (noun) a servent; one who serves; a worker or employee; a follower; ex: a slave (servant to god)... So you see, we are are *ALL* "slaves" in some way or another... Do you have a job working for a boss of sorts? You are a "slave" to that employer... Hell, we are *ALL* "slaves" to the government... All the "DOs" and "DON'Ts" we must follow, you know... And the "slaves" refered to in this song referred to the Americans held captive by the British army (or visa versa)... Considering the history, this song is a very powerful, and beautiful song... Love you all... Stay safe and God bless, whoever and wherever you may be...

The “Star Spangled Banner” was ordered to be played at all sporting events by President Woodrow Wilson during World War I. A paper was later signed by President Herbert Hoover after World War I to accept the order that all sporting events must play the “Star Spangled Banner” before every contest via the first stanza.

The third verse here is NOT the one written by Francis Scott Key. When Key wrote verses 1 and 2 in 1814, "millions" i.e. African American slaves, had not been "unchained" and wouldn't be until 1865. The verse here was supposedly written by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. at least fifty years later.
