Our national anthem doesn't really sound like that. This arrangement has 7ths from Stravinsky & a repeat of the final verse.
Never forget the absolute dead silence when that flag was brought out, but it wasn't until much later that we could record HD. The dead silent introduction was omitted from the rebroadcast in 2004.

A repeat is an emphasis. This is the message to our enemies and to ourselves: we may be torn and wounded, yet the Star Spangled Banner waves on, the ideal is still alive. The sound of the choir stirs the real music in the heart.

You know, many people say the Mormons can be weird, but I've always seen them as very warm and friendly people. And their choir is AWESOME :)

The theology is kinda wierd, but their core ideas are family centered and focus on solid morals bringing people up. Greatly kind people, and yes the choir is beautiful!

Agree 💯. As a visitor in 2017 in SLC on a road trip I can say. The visiting of the office building and all the other places of this area was incredible. I had a warm welcome and a 5 hours!!! personal sightseeing tour with so much interesting information. One of my best experience I ever had. And now one ask me to change my religion or neither I received afterwards some request. So respect.....

This was the same arrangement they used in at the Opening Ceremony in Atlanta, 1996, but much more emotional this time. I was there that evening. It was a cathartic moment....there was not a dry eye in the stadium. The focus was on the WTC flag as this occurred almost 5 months to the day of the 9/11 attacks, and we as a country were still reeling. Notice they didn't raise the stadium flag until the end of the CODA (the repeat), and it was wonderful and an extremely appropriate way to respect BOTH flags. And no divas were involved to doctor it or twirl it or personalize it to their own styles.

The arrangement was done by the late Robert Shaw, longtime music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Shaw conducted the arrangement at the Atlanta opening ceremony, and passed away sometime later.

I love that they sang it as written all the way through and then only on the coda broke out into multi-part harmony. That really draws the emphasis to the long tradition of constancy and the contrasts is with the bright future that will not be dimmed by such an act.

Our National Anthem doesn't sound like that? Stravinsky's national anthem in by far on of, if not the, best arrangement out there. The Mormon Tabernacle choir does an amazing job and I love how the last few lines of the verse are repeated to close it out.

First that was not a "repeat of the final verse" but a repeat of the chorus. This is the final verse of the star spangled banner: O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation. Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.' And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

There is no official arrangement of the Star-Spangled Banner, as far as I know; therefore, the poster's remark about how our national anthem "doesn't really sound like that" is strictly his opinion. There used to be a website (it may still be there) that presented a history of the Star-Spangled Banner and demonstrated how it was played through the years. Someone from the 1800's could just as easily have said, "The Star-Spangled Banner doesn't really sound like that."

Sorry to disappoint you, supremes ballard, but this was also pre-recorded. We were singing along, but we did not have microphones anywhere near us. There's no way that you can ensure good audio quality in a setting like this, especially for a live TV event. This and all of the music that we performed in the ceremony was recorded with the Utah Symphony in Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City a few weeks prior to the opening of the games.

+Jeffrey Buchanan Patton Yes, this is definitely my favorite arrangement and one of the most moving presentations I've ever seen. I love how the flag rises and reaches the top exactly when the music ends. Many rehearsals went into the production of this ceremony. We were there for two of them on previous evenings. The weather was very cold, but for the actual event it had warmed up considerably and there was a light snowfall. Just magical. I'll never forget it.

Same thing for President Donald Trump's inauguration. The full choir recorded in the Tabernacle and then a smaller group went to Washington, D.C. and lip-synched for the cameras. Very typical for live events where you have too many variables (wind, rain, etc.) to guarantee clean audio.

I like it - the coda of the first (and only verse sung) was a nice touch. I'd rank it far and away superior to some of the renditions I hear in NBA games (Fergie, Aguilera, Bolton).
