Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home movie clips: j.mp/1J9zolD

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) grills Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) on their strange behavior.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) concludes the story arc begun with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and continued in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), but on a wholly new, different, and upbeat note. As the movie opens, months have elapsed since the events in Star Trek III; Admiral Kirk (William Shatner), McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Scott (James Doohan), Sulu (George Takei), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and Chekhov (Walter Koenig) are marooned in self-imposed exile on Vulcan, along with the resurrected and regenerated Spock (Leonard Nimoy, who also directed). While Spock tries to sort out the Vulcan and human halves of his resurrected psyche, the others prepare to return to Earth to face a brace of charges by the Klingon Empire and Star Fleet over events on Genesis. Taking off in their commandeered, jerry-rigged Klingon ship, they head to Earth, not knowing that a new crisis could destroy their home world -- a huge, immensely powerful alien probe has entered the galaxy and established a position near Earth, disabling every vehicle and installation in its path with its energy and communication output, and has ionized the entire atmosphere and started vaporizing the oceans, leaving the planet only hours to survive. Spock determines that the probe is sending out signals to another intelligent terrestrial life form, humpbacked whales, which no longer exist. Using the gravity slingshot time-warp effect (established early in the original series) to travel back into Earth's 20th century, Kirk and company land in 1980s San Francisco to try and bring humpbacked whales to the 23rd century, to respond to the probe. Thus starts a surprisingly breezy, light-hearted, yet serious odyssey through the past (comparable to the best work of the original series), as the crew learns to deal with exact-change buses, angry drivers, punk-rock enthusiasts and other elements of '80s life, and Kirk tries to persuade a scientist (Catherine Hicks) of his good intentions for two whales in captivity. The screenplay, co-authored by Steve Meerson, Peter Krikes, Nicholas Meyer, and Harve Bennett (from a story by Nimoy and Bennett), is the cleverest and most sophisticated of all the Star Trek movie screenplays, recalling some of the elements of Meyer's earlier time-travel movie Time After Time and also anticipating the feel and tone of the series Star Trek: The Next Generation (which would be on the air not quite a year later). Nimoy's direction offers a combination of brisk pacing and a deep love of the characters and the actors, as well as a serious appreciation of the humorous aspects of the script, and Shatner gives his best performance of any of the movies.

Ah, what about the Italian part, that was too funny, "Do you guys like Italian, NO! YES-No!! NO! YES!! NO!!! YES!! I love Italian, so do you, YES." CLASSIC!!! William Shatner was great too, but Leonard Nimoy just stole every moment in that scene, even this Hard Luck Case clip, he's so awesome and funny in this wonderful sequel. GOD, I'm going to miss him, so much!!! He's part of the reason I still love Sci-Fi. We love you, Leonard, God Bless... RIP

Yes. And that's a disagreement I have with Star Wars fans. They all claim Star Wars is SciFi. It's not. Star Trek is Sci-fi whereas Star Wars is Science Fantasy. I love both. But I was raised on Star Trek, so I'm a bit biased. I even love TNG. Sure, it was more up to date, but the producers were able to retain much of the lure to retain fans of the original series. So here we have, fans of the original series as well as fans of TNG. So technically, Star Trek has a much bigger fan base than all the Star Wars fans. And if you pay attention, Star Wars is geared more for children, especially after Disney bought the franchise. Biggest mistake in the history of making movies.

I think that better than the dialysis is the argument McCoy has with the surgeon with the medical terms until the surgeon very clearly makes the wrong procedural call. "My God man, drilling holes in his head is not the answer! The artery must be repaired! Now, put away your butcher's knives and let me save this patient before it's too late!" Pure McCoy, bluntly getting to the point.

Bedford Crenshaw ummm dude I'm Mormon so....it originated in the east in the doctrine back before all the wars between the nephites and lamanites and all that and the apostasy and then flashing forward to 1820 when Joseph Smith was 14 and kneeling in the sacred grove Heavenly Father and Jesus told him to restore the Mormon Church back on Earth and so He found the Golden Plates containing the BOM and all of this was in Utah and casually went across the country or what little of it at the time . @@caitlinfrancis6 "He found the Golden Plates containing the BOM and all of this was in Utah" You don 't know much about the history of your pseudo-religion. Joseph Smith claimed to have found the Golden Plates in Manchester, New York. He founded his church in New York and published The Book of Mormon in 1830. He named his church the Church of Christ, but changed the name to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1838, after a claimed revelation. In 1831, Smith and his "Church of Christ" followers moved west. They first gathered in Kirtland, Ohio, where they built the Kirtland Temple. Following troubles in Kirtland, they moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. More troubles occurred there, so he moved to Carthage, Illinois, where he and his brother were killed in 1844. Many of his followers then followed Brigham Young to the area that became the Utah Territory. Smith himself was never in Utah, and your claim that he found the Golden Plates there is nonsense.

I agree, it was a shame that her part ended there, particularly considering the next instalment was probably the worst film star trek film produced along side insurrection. I never quite understood why she ended up 'going to her ship' given that presumably she would have been easily the most sensible person to provide input to ensure that the Whales thrived on earth in the 23rd century so I assumed the editors overlooked that so they could put her on a ship so she could take on a future role.

Great actors and great scene, but I'm still nostalgic about that truck and how trucks today suck with automatic transmissions, leather seats, and power windows.

You can still buy an F-150 XL work truck, regular cab with a full size bed, with manual windows, but it will be an automatic.

@@epa316 I know, but you have to order it and wait 14 weeks. No dealer stocks that truck.

LDS? Or did Kirk mean LSD? Because if I were walking around with Spock while he's dressed like that, that would be my explanation to on-lookers. It fits.

Whales? Reminds me of a joke. Scotsman sees a group of larger women in a bar. Walks over and asks them. Are ye lassies from Scotland? They answer him with. It's Wales. Excuse me. Are ye Whales from Scotland?

It's good to see all three in the scene together like I did in the movie theater. I think my VHS copy is pan-and-scan so it moves or jumps back and forth only showing the faces of one or two at a time. Although they do shift the camera to show only her alternating to both of them, so whatever. This is one movie I'd see again in the theater, as I was asked that when talking about _Titanic_ returning to theaters last week. Also, I liked the movie poster shown at the end, not the teaser one and not the water-colors-looking one they put on the VHS box.

Haha, yeah that's the joke. Mormonism is silly, but the marine biologist was giving them the benefit of the doubt by being polite and assuming they meant LSD by correcting them.

One of the messages of Star Trek was that one person can make a difference. He should have given her a speech like that, left her, then when he returned there was no problem because she saved the whales.
