Another of Emissary's several odd errors and made me think the editor wasn't versed in DS9 in any way as in didn't bother to watch even the 1st cpl episodes or ANY epis for that matter.

Rethinking this comment , if I remember right Miles O'Brien is the chief operations officer of the station so his position may have him referred to as an officer as enlisted on my ship in certain positions were given the same honor

That's one of several idiosyncrasies I noted in Emissary including Quark's Place being called "Quark's Casino" et al.

The author likely had an early script to base his novel off of, this is how he knows characters names who aren’t given in the show, such as other crew on the bridge at the beginning Borg battle. However they need a few months to write, and the final script may change, it’s likely O’Brien may have been an ensign in the early script but that was changed later. I don’t imagine these authors have a lot of freedom, they basically just novelizing a script they’re given.

@@SnifferBear Your explanation is exactly what I thought: That this book is based on an early version of the teleplay which would explain many of the details and descriptions which are seemingly in error. That being said, there are a few contradictions which suggest that the writers and/or editor weren't paying close attention and/or didn't feel concerned about accuracy.

Not really. It just gives my mind more freedom to ponder the nonsensical parts which don't make sense, of which there are many.

It does hit harder I think because of the extra details and added scenes not included in the original. Also, the writing, a few major errors aside, is especially good for a Star Trek novel or novella or whatever Emissary qualifies as being.

I pondered this as well. I thought, isn't she a Bajoran attache working with (but not a member of SF) hence her rank which isn't in the hierarchy of the naval ranks SF uses?

I agree that there are quite a few major errors throughout. That being said, Emissary still remains one of the most well-written ST audiobooks I've experienced. But yeah: It does fail gloriously in several areas.

They had one encounter with the Borg before Wolf 359; there wasn’t a lot to know. It wasn’t like they were fighting the Klingons or Romulans, Starfleet as a whole was quite literally unprepared for the Borg.
