@@alejandronopasanada5302 the heart of Star Trek lies in its sense of the crew is the family we care about so not really knowing the extended crew all that well in Disco creates a certain level of added distance when compared to other Star Trek shows. Even SNW after one season felt like you knew the bridge crew better than 4 seasons of Disco. I don’t think that’s unfair or unreasonable to say.

Out of Star Trek Discovery characters, Jett Reno is the one I'm going to miss the most after the show is over. And I'm kinda surprised that the Vulcans still have Victorian attitude towards interracial marriages. I thought after the unification of Vulcans and Romulans, Vulcans are okay with interracial romance. P.S. It is so refreshing to see a Ferengi bartender again.

To be fair, in TOS we really didn't know anything about Uhura, Sulu, or Chekov... and we REALLY didn't know much about Leslie or DeSalle.

The bridge work crew in Discovery are mostly "filler" crew members with barely any lines so Paramount can keep the hiring costs down and bridge crew are replaceable as shown here with bridge crew changes. Only the main characters have names you remember.

Times have changed and context matters when making the comparison. It is accurate to say compared to modern writing we didn't know that much at all about Uhura, Sulu, or Chekov in TOS. In fact Nichelle Nichols almost left because of that issue, with MLK talking her into staying. So, here we come to the point about context. For the time (late 1960s, with Cold War and Civil Rights tensions) Uhura, Sulu and Chekov represented ground breaking characters on TV even with the limitations of the depictions. Uhura's role is rightly pointed to as a positive form of representation during the civil rights era.

@billkerns9258
@billkerns9258 2 ай бұрын
@@richardvinsen2385 Indeed, the names have echoed through the years into the broader culture. George Takei and Nichelle Nichols are cultural icons, each in their own way, and Walter Koenig also built an outstanding career. We’re talking about roles and performers who truly made a difference. There’s no comparison between that and Discovery in the big picture.

Why is the ship’s doctor in charge of the hunt for information on L’ak and whatever the woman’s name is? Then, when they’re on the planet and he has the other consciousness inside him, it’s a little ridiculous that he would let Michael and Book deal with the creatures as a test to see what they would do. If they killed the creatures to save their own lives, that would be a failure? Seems like self defense to me.

Good video. I like the “mini, quick breakdown” teaser you offered at the videos start. This seems like an addition to the format. A good hook! I don’t have paramount plus any more so just follow Disco online. I haven’t seen this episode. I love the notion of revisiting recognised alien races especially when they’ve been mentioned but never depicted. Discovery is visually too dark and blue imho. Like a James Cameron movie season after season. The tech has become too advanced. The stakes don’t feel real. The whole notion of a race to collect puzzle pieces feels tired and overused. Still, I plan to watch at some point probably on DVD.

I'm very curious as to how that tracking bug that Mol put on Adira at the end is supposed to work. You would think that with Zora monitoring everything on the Discovery, that she would be able to pickup any rogue signals being sent out from the ship that might allow someone to track them so curious if its actually a tracker or just a pre-programmed bug that's supposed to mess with the ship in some way.

With this being the final season, I doubt we're going to get anything of any depth from the side characters on the Discovery bridge. Action has always been the main focus of Discovery with a bit of token relationship scenes and the always welcome Tig Notaro's quipping to break up the action set pieces. All this drive for Diversity and Inclusion but ironically the diverse characters aren't really...included that much... confused shrugs. Then Rayner joins as First Officer and we get 20 seconds to get to know the crew but then find out that Rayner's not really that interested in getting to know the crew anyway. Oh, the irony. Was this an attempt at an in-joke on the lack of character development in Discovery? If so, it definitely worked! Aside from gripes...I enjoy the action set pieces in the show, this is where I find Discovery excels. I do also like the no nonsense Rayner, a welcome addition to the final season. He's in danger of becoming an interesting personality so he'll probably be killed off at some point! 😆

I would like to see more than 10 episodes per season on Discovery or Strange New Worlds. Just reduce the episode length down to 45 minutes instead of an hour and they could do 12 episodes or 13. Character-building scenes could be done while the plot is advancing, instead of dragging it out in long conversations in between major scenes to fill the hour. Otherwise, episode 3 of Discovery was still okay with some good moments with the Trill ancient testing and speaking with Burnham and Book. Tilly's opinion and final words to the new Commander getting to know the crew, was a good scene though, when her irritation reached a boiling point!

Yeah the 10 episode season works okay when its one story for the whole season like on Picard, but with each SNW episode being self contained story it's crying out for at least a 13-16 episode season. I think the days of seeing a 22-24 episode season are over, the production value of the show is just too high for that many episodes but 13-16 would be perfect.

@@Sci-Finatics Yes, I would like to see 13-16 episodes per season at Trek at 45 min. episodes. Most of the cop shows, 9-1-1, NCIS, Quantum Leap and Swat shows are 16-18 shows on streaming. If Paramount spends a bit less on episodes they could go up to 13 to 16 episodes. We wait a few months for another Trek show to show up is too long. I think that's the problem with movies and stuff these days, just cheesy products and also lack of creativity. Let's hope that all the writer and actor raises will actually help them make better movies/TV shows... or maybe some of them, just lack creativity regardless...but also upper management could shoot down a creative idea too to a story, so idk... And so if it ends up being a genesis device, then there's not a whole lot of creativity...it's just a bunch of old nostalgia that paramount is try to do...even with Picard, why a constitution style star ship as it's main ship? Stop relying heavily on past shows. Although I don't mind that they chose to use neoconstitution, it just seemed kinda weird...we already have SNW, why do u need another ship that's similar?

@@heleneb2105 typical reply. It’s the bad writing and not having the nostalgic understanding of true Star Trek. The CGI is awesome and Captain Burnham is to emotionally attached to herself to be considered a great captain. The writers won’t allow her to get past her own self mentally. Despite how divisive ST:D has been with fans; I'm old school and have so far seasons 1 - 4 on DVD, yes DVD not Blu-ray nor 4K nor streaming. This iteration of Trek series continues to remain where I, too like many others, not only can I not name most of the Discovery bridge crew, I'd struggle to string a few words together about their backstories. I know there have been episodes where writers have tried to present this crew as a family like other series, but for me unfortunately this hasn't really resonated with me. A couple of refreshing aspects of Discovery vs other series; in no particular order... Spore drive - even if it's retired tech, we never had seen this type of drive before in other series Set in the future beyond 24th Century- lots of fans quibble about how many prequels or origin series / films there are so it was great to see Discovery set in the future and remains so. I agree storytelling overall has been patchy and the whole season arcs of "universal jeapordy" was tiring and tested our patience and tolerance but otherwise Discovery unlike ST:E hadn't been cancelled before it's natural closure. I look forward to complete Discovery's DVD set when S5 DVD is released. Where to now? Section 31 & Starfleet Academy... hold my drink 😮

It had its moments but the sooner Grey and Adira are written completely out of the series, the better. They've always served only as the gayest of all distractions, they exist only to make this Trek more woke than any other. But the comical irony of them is that ultimately they're a male and female couple. LOL. The giant bugs are SO contrived, and look WAY too much like the alien bugs in the video game in the Wreck-It Ralph movie. Captain (now Commander) Rayner is possibly the only good thing to happen on the ship this season so far. He's got a really rough exterior but I predict he'll smooth out soon enough. Or get tossed out an airlock in his underwear.
