My favourite The Doctor: I don't know what happened to you; but there can be any number of explanations: hallucination, telepathic communication from another race, repressed memory, momentary contact with a parallel reality - take your pick. The universe is such a strange place. The resigned way he says it, the Doctor almost seems to break the fourth wall.

Something I didn't appreciate at the time I first started watching Voyager was that Janeway was unusually well suited to her ship. Every command meeting is a demonstration that she's a Science Officer's captain, and knowing that she was nearly a pefect fit for her particular vessel makes the show hang together more. Relates more to SGA that way.

One thing I rarely see mentioned is just how good the Bio-Neural gel packs were at allowing the ship to act almost autonomously. In the episode 'Workforce' we see the ECH giving orders to the ships computer to engage in combat sans the entire crew. Remember that this is functionally the ship giving orders to itself, with no organic mind present to oversee.

I think part of it was that voyager was more "fun"... don't get me wrong, TNG was plenty of fun, but unlike TNG the crew of voyager were quirkier, particularly with The Doctor, Neelix, and perpetual deer-in-the-headlights Harry Kim... where TNG had Sherlock Holmes, Voyager had Captain Proton. It's kind of all over the place and inconsistent, easier to watch if you don't try to build a continuity out of it... but I can totally understand why a younger audience would dig it more than the other star treks.

Nice breakdown of a ship that was put to the ultimate long range test. Any chance of seeing a part two for voyager as it underwent multiple alterations through its seven year trip from Borg alcoves to enlarged holodecks for Hirogen dressed as nazis to hunt in, to astrometrics, alternative propulsion drives, temporal shields and extensive bulkheads during the year of hell that then didn't happen. An historical document displayed it as having been covered in weaponry, Borg installed weapon launchers on it in fluidic space and a time traveling admiral covered it in deployable armour plating and this is just from what I can remember. As you say in your video, the intrepid class was a test bed for new ideas, and voyager proved more than capable of undergoing any alteration necessary to get the job done.

@AngemonRulez I hear what you are saying, I think there is a misunderstanding hear, my comment was in reference to a skit that Spacedock did about how Star Trek as a franchise has a habit to lean into technobabble to get out of situations, go check it out it's fun. As for Voyager itself and their supply problems, I assume that they do spend a lot of their time looking for raw resources to keep them going and don't need to be shown and told about that for 7 seasons, though it would have been nice if the show made better narrative use of their unique situation of being lost in deep space with no help or supplies. And I would agree about the photon torpedoes if it wasn't for the exchange between Janeway and Chakotay, where Chakotay states "We have a complement of thirty eight photon torpedoes at our disposal, Captain." and she replies "And no way to replace them after they're gone." making it sound like they can not be replaced with resources they have aboard ship, of course I'm sure the fabled Starfleet engineers could find a way but with that set up it would have been nice to address how it was solved as the show sets this up as a problem to be overcome, but that's just me :)

@@artembentsionov Haha well crew members dying is nothing new to trek, though it would have been nice in a small crew of 140 ish all marooned in space there would be more of an impact of gold shirts getting killed. The shuttles things is a bit of a joke, im sure over time they could convert part of the hanger or cargo bay into a shuttle and ship parts factory, though I'm still waiting for a technobabble answer (other than the magic of special effects...) to how the Delta Flyer can get out of the hanger as its too big to fit through.

It would be interesting to see the future versions based upon that space frame, after all Voyager was a first generation design (yes I know STO has some). The Variable Geometry nacelles was one of two concepts they were testing out (the other being the Sovereign's design) to enable starships to travel at warp in unstable regions where subspace is vunerable to damage - Note warp does *not damage regular subspace,* if it did then after millions of years of warp capable civilisations there would be no subspace. It was to allow travel in the Hekaras corridor and similar regions (with tetryon radiation) without triggering any effects, a strategically useful ability, especially if encountering similar instabilities during exploration where no rescue ship would know to look if you got in trouble. But future designs could use fixed nacelles and a warp core modeled on the Sovereign's design (it was supposed to be the better of the two, they were trialing both). As well, the Sovereign had isolinear back ups for the bio neural gel packs, the ship was designed later than the Intrepid class so it had a few design concept improvements that could be applied to the Intrepid. A Intrepid Mark 2 would be a cool looking ship, and even more effective and robust. As for the ship itself, it fulfilled a vital new role in Starfleet, a versatile practical compact version of the Galaxy class. The Galaxy class could be considered bloated while the Intrepid was _lean and mean._ It allowed long range missions with a much smaller crew, which had several major advantages: First of all posts Dominion war, Starfleet had manpower issues so smaller crew requirement ships were a logistical advantage (and more able to be risked … ). Secondly many more Intrepid ships could be constructed and crewed for the same amount of resources used in a Galaxy class ship (by over a factor of 6 for size, either 5 or 6 for crew), and thus more exploration in different regions could occur. Finally the Intrepid could do double duty as a _very effective_ fast long range combat ship and with it's extensive facilities as a support vessel for pure combat ships such as the Defiant class. Imagine a Wolfpack with a bunch of Defiants and a Intrepid to cover the slack for the facilities the minimalist Defiants lack (full medical, extremely powerful long range sensors, *large replicators* and repair and resupply facilities, Holodeck training simulators ect). It would be a nasty combat group that didn't cost as much resources as a Akira class (3,000,000 metric tons versus only 700,000 for a Intrepid class, a Defiant was 355,000). So you get one Intrepid and Six Defiants for the material cost of one Akira. That's a scary Hunter/Killer raiding group that can stay out for a long time without resupply. The Intrepid thus fits in perfectly with the new philosophy and requirements of post Dominion Starfleet.

the Galaxy Class was meant to be a heavy cruiser and a flag ship. meant to slug it out with a Klingon or Romulan flag ship not jump in and just start kicking. the intrepid was a ship of the line. she was meant to jump in strike jump away though i always thought the intrepid class needed a cloak like the defiant class had. imagine how much crap Janeway could have avoided if she could have ran cloaked.

Whenever I see a blended saucer and secondary hull Starfleet ship head on (Nova, Sovereign, ect) I want to attach the nacelles to the primary hull as well. Yes I know the Intrepid's move, but the Intrepid Mark 2 might use the Sovereign's nacelle and warp core design instead (it was judged better of the two systems). Just anchor them there and suddenly the ship looks more robust and sleek as well. I keep imagining how serious an issue cracks in a pylon would be. Although I would also like to extend the height of the saucer far further back, rather than have the sudden drop off at the middle, it looks a little off, side on, like a sloped back of a head. And it would give a lot more usable space in engineering and shuttle bays. It's how I would upgrade the Nova class specifically, but the Intrepid could use it as well. And imagine a Intrepid built with the aesthetics of the Sovereigns grey rounded sleek metallic design.

0:29 fun fact: This Galaxy class ship ist the USS Enterprise D. After the finale of TNG, the ship was ordered back to Earth to be overhauled in spacedock. It was here last upgrade.. Shortly thereafter she left for her last mission (Star Trek Generations) as a result of which the ship was lost.

I can't take that image of the 'landed' Voyager seriously. That much ship, on just four of those teeny little legs (with most of the weight over the front pair)--nope.

Daniel also mentioned anti-gravity generators that help the landing struts. I suspect some of those generators are on the bottom of the saucer section.
@Etaukan

@@peterwright5358 Fair enough, but a power interruption of only a few seconds would lead to some real issues in that case, and we've certainly seen lots of instances of that sort of problem over the years. And hey, if it can only 'land' via an anti-gravity-assisted hover, why not skip the legs altogether? Or use those incredibly versatile phasers to carve out a landing pit shaped to provide a stable and supporting cradle for the thing. That, or carry the variable-geometry thing a bit further, and have the saucer section pivot forward and down till it's in-line with the lower hull, and bring the saucer low enough for another pair of legs to extend from there--that might look pretty great for warp transitions too.

A dedicated combat variant of the Intrepid class would be a force to be reckoned with largely due to its hull geometry and nacelle placement. The Intrepid is configured in such a way as to facilitate totally unobstructed firing arcs.

It's too bad that they never utilized the Aeroshuttle design for voyager. All they had to do was build it, launch it underneath the saucer section like it was planned, and call it the Delta Flyer with all the same mechanics/abilities that the Delta Flyer had. Also I wonder if they intend to bring the starship Voyager in the new Picard series since Janeway is an Admiral at that point? It would be pretty cool to have the enterprise and voyager in the same scene.

Yeah, but there would be The Dominion to deal with and, well that would have gone VERY Poorly for Janeway. The Borg use flawed(at times) logic, The Dominion just blow shit(/Ships)up that doesn't agree with them. Better to face the Borg(and get free rides/faster travel) than deal with a nasty Military Force. Remember Space is folded not flat plane we see. So, getting back to the Federation (they never stated it was to Earth specifically just "home") could have been closer the way they ultimately took.

Great analysis! I see the Intrepid as a response to the perceived failures of the Galaxy-class design. while not as adaptable or capable or able to do longer duration missions as the Galaxy class, it likely took half the resources to build and equip and a sixth of the crew. Starfleet could have two Intrepids zipping about with their higher speeds and picking up what specialized personnel and equipment to do the multitude of missions a single Galaxy class would have done in the TNG era, without putting all the eggs in one basket (the loss of the Odyssey and Enterprise-D just prior to the launch of the Intrepids likely contributed to that). while maybe not as good in a fight as a Galaxy class, an Intrepid likely could get out of a fight and run for safety more effectively than a Galaxy class (again, the loss of the Odyssey and Enterprise-D to what on paper should have been tactically inferior forces). all that said, i was never a big fan of the overall shape, which i felt was unbalanced. The nacelles were too small in proportion.

I like the idea of biological gel packs, but I don't buy the speed increase. The nerves in our body are far slower than electronic circuitry. I forget what the speed of nerves is, but I understand that if we didn't have an amazing ability to almost predict what's going to happen a brief moment into the future (like "muscle memory") we would exist in a state of perpetual clumsiness.

@@piotrd.4850 I'm certain parallelism would work for speeding up work on large problems. But for the minutiae of spaceship work, it might not be so good. You wouldn't want it regulating your flow of antimatter, or other critical systems on a ship. Don't get me wrong, I think some sort of biological component would be awesome tech to have on your spaceship. But it would be more useful in the realm of general computing/problem solving rather than spread out and running systems throughout the ship as depicted on Voyager. Again, I don't hate on the show for that reason. It was a perfectly legitimate sci-fi element.
