Sometimes we need a film where it’s just the characters having fun ! This is a such a lightweight film compared to the darkness and emotional last two films so it’s very refreshing.

[Probe] Why did you remain silent for so long? They [The whales] tried to explain, but it reacted in surprise and disbelief. Where were you? it asked. We were not here, they replied, but now we have returned. We cannot explain, traveler, because we do not yet understand all that has happened to us. By "us," the traveler understood them to mean themselves as individuals and all their kind for millions of years in the past. By their song it recognized them as youths. Who are you? it asked. Where are the others? Where are the elders?' They are gone, the whales sang, with sadness. They have passed into the deep, they have vanished upon white shores. We alone survive. Your song is simple, the traveler said, chiding. It was not above petulance. Where are the tales you have invented in all this time, and where are the stories of your families? They are lost, replied the whale song. All lost. We must begin again. We must evolve our civilization again. We have no other answer. The traveler hesitated. It wondered if perhaps it should sterilize the planet anyway despite the presence of the untaught singing youths. But if it began a new evolution here, the planet would be silent at least as long as it would take the traveler to circumscribe the galaxy. The traveler would have to endure the pain of the world's silence. Organic evolution required so much time. Besides, the traveler possessed very little cruelty. It could consider destroying the young singers, but the conception caused great distress. It abandoned the idea. Very well, it said. I shall anticipate young stories. Fare thee well. The traveler fell silent. The whales bid it farewell. The traveler collected its energy. It ended its interference with the patterns of the blue-white planet. It ceased to power the violent storms ravaging the surface. It sought its usual course, oriented itself properly, and sailed on a tail of flame into the brilliant blackness of the galaxy.

Thank you for taking the time to film from TV then uploading. I cried as I viewed this marvelous footage. Now, if only Iceland, Japan and Norway would STOP whaling, earth could be free of such a future. Roddenberry was a visionary in the 1960's. Live long and prosper to those writers who carry his visions such as this! Never belittle this film. What Gene Roddenberry saw such as shuttles, tricorders, etc. have come to pass. Thanks again!

Roddenberry was a satan worshiper (truly, his personal associations were L Ron Hubbard and Aleister Crowley) and for all we know, the artificial future he envisaged was planted in his mind by the devil, to spread to the world for instance the concept of beaming from here to there implies there is no human soul ... think about how that impacts your subconscious why you think there's such a slavic like following by "trekkies"? trek is a religious cult

Yeah, they answered the Probe/Traveler's question. The answer saddened it that it and its creators didn't even consider their allies/friends were facing extinction and were unable to cry for help because they lacked the means to send an SOS. Their extinction was very much it's fault as much as the humans. It's why even though tempted, the Probe couldn't kill the humans: the probe would be no better than them. So it accepts that it needs to leave and make its report and this time be more readily available to the young whales because their children will have questions about their lost ancestors and only it has the answers. And as the novels would show...the humans have learned of its' mistake with the whales and show it that they aren't beyond saving too.

Interesting thought. There was a line of dialogue which never made it into the final film explaining why Saavik chose to stay behind on Vulcan. Apparently she was pregnant with Spock's child as a result of her mating with him during his Pon farr in the previous film. Saavik was originally slated to return in STVI, but her role was rewritten into that of Lt. Valeris.

Spock I think explained that Humpback Whales went extinct in the 21st century so it's likely that Earth's environmental conditions continued to deteriorate and this combined with World War III and the aftermath likely reduced their numbers to the point of no return. I get what you're saying though, blue whales and bowhead whales would be the ones more likely to die out.

In the Probe novelization when Spock mind-melded with the whale probe, he learned that the aliens who built it were of similar features to the humpback whales. The movie established that the race had been communicating with the whales 10 million years ago.

Subtitles were considered, but rejected. But there is a translation in the official novelised version: [Probe] Why did you remain silent for so long? They [The whales] tried to explain, but it reacted in surprise and disbelief. Where were you? it asked. We were not here, they replied, but now we have returned. We cannot explain, traveler, because we do not yet understand all that has happened to us. By "us," the traveler understood them to mean themselves as individuals and all their kind for millions of years in the past. By their song it recognized them as youths. Who are you? it asked. Where are the others? Where are the elders? They are gone, the whales sang, with sadness.

During the communication the probe was asking why the whales haven't been in contact with them for centuries. George(the male humpback) sadly explained that man was heavily hunting them down and their race went extinct. He and his mate, Gracie, came from the past to help save earth and speak on Kirk and his crew's behalf. Upon learning what happened to the whales, the probe asked if they wanted it to destroy humanity. George refused stating not all mankind are terrible people using Kirk, his crew and Dr. Gillian as prime examples. The probe accepts their request and deactivates it's probing device. Thanking George and Gracie for speaking to it, the probe leaves to restore the powers to the Space Dock and the ships.
