STAR TREK Logical Thinking #46 - The Clustering Illusion

Educational PSA where Mister Spock corrects some crewmembers after overhearing them employing a logical fallacy in their discussions.
Had NBC decided to teach principles of sound reasoning in the mid-1970's they could do no better than to have the logical Mister Spock do the teaching. As an addition to the the two-dozen or so Public Service Announcements I created featuring the animated crew of the Starship Enterprise, I have created a new series of PSAs featuring Mr. Spock called "Logical Thinking." Using the Vulcan science officer to educate them in proper reasoning is "Only Logical" as he states at the end of each PSA.
Done in the style of Filmation's 1973-75 Animated STAR TREK series.

I've always been curious: why is it, in the shuttlecraft PSAs, that Spock's voice suddenly drops to bass and sounds mechanical when he says, "That would be best?"

I think if Spock took one look at the stock market, inflation, the economy, the border, battery cars, and on and on, he might come up with " A government that works against common sense is not logical."

The “hot hand” in basketball is a great example of the clustering fallacy. Every shot has a certain probability of going through the hoop independent of prior shots. Normal behavior of random events is to have clusters of successes or failures. But when a player makes several difficult shots in a row, the other players will try to pass the ball to him because they think they are “on a streak” or have a “hot hand” and are more likely to make shots. It also helps casinos make money because gamblers that have won several times in a row think they have a “winning streak” and don’t stop until they lose.

There may be something to the former in the way of confidence but nothing to the latter as it's truly random. Of course, if the other team steps up their defense on this player they may block some more shots and get some turnovers. I remember one year the special teams of an NFL franchise ran several kickoffs back for a touchdown in the first few games. This may have affected how their opponents made future kickoffs to avoid a repeat. Had that happened in the last four games of the season, I think it might not have affected their opponent's play.

Great character designs and production! I love this style of animation and hope to tell some Trek stories in time with a similar-ish look. Been building a 3D starship (animations on my channel) I plan to use as a “digital stage” in time to drop my characters into. Have you done a “Behind The Scenes” video? What are the species of the crewmen? Is the grey guy a pre-Soong android, or a guy with some sort of cybernetic augmentations?

This Logic Lesson features two new characters. The augmented pale green-skinned humanoid engineer Lieutenant J'Karl and the purple-skinned, fin-headed command section Lieutenant Junior Grade Thrax. The character design for both these alien characters come from Issue number 15 of Gold Key Comic's STAR TREK comic book dated August 1972 which featured a story written by the late Len Wein entitled "The Museum at the End of Time." The comic was the basis for the excellent animated "The Time Trap" episode. Their species were never given names.

@@CHDanhauser Thats awesome. Ive never heard of the Gold Key Star Trek comics. I recently bought a bulk lot of cheap comics and inside was some early 1980s Marvel Star Trek comics based on the movies and a TNG comic based on the episode "The Big Goodbye".

It would be interesting to see a clip where Mr. Spock's logic is skewed by his human half and his time spent with humans and he is set straight by a full-blooded Vulcan, perhaps Sarek.
