STAR TREK Logical Thinking #58 - Relativist Fallacy (Fallacy of "Your" Truth)

Educational PSA where Mister Spock corrects some crewmembers after overhearing them employing a logical fallacy in their discussions.
Had NBC decided to teach principles of sound reasoning in the mid-1970's they could do no better than to have the logical Mister Spock do the teaching. As an addition to the the two-dozen or so Public Service Announcements I created featuring the animated crew of the Starship Enterprise, I have created a new series of PSAs featuring Mr. Spock called "Logical Thinking." Using the Vulcan science officer to educate them in proper reasoning is "Only Logical" as he states at the end of each PSA.
Done in the style of Filmation's 1973-75 Animated STAR TREK series.

Thank you kindly for this. As a professor of philosophy teaching to mostly young millennials and Gen Z, it is alarming how few today see this as an actual fallacy and defiantly and brazenly embrace this type of thinking.

The echo effect isn't really doing it for me. It's distracting and gets on my nerves. If it were lower, I wouldn't mind so much. 2:00) If you'll allow me to play devil's advocate, I just want to say that it's entirely possible for a rule or law to not have any discriminatory language and yet be applied in a discriminatory way by bad-faith actors. Also, bad faith actors can enforce "their law" for reasons that are stupid to us but make perfect sense to them. Yes, I understand he's using a fallacy. That fallacy can ironically lead to the very problem he's trying to prevent (Discrimination. Bigots often use their preconceived notions of other groups as justification for shitty behavior.). Still, I just wanted to point out that his heart was in the right place, and being mindful of implicit biases within an organization is a good thing.
@jamesproffitt6304
@jamesproffitt6304 8 ай бұрын
While it's true that there are bad-faith actors that use such laws in discriminating ways, it does not mean 'because someone didn't get the recognition I thought they deserved, they were discriminated against.' is automatically true. If you have 3 promotions and 5 beings equally educated, and only the three non-Benzite have been in deep space for longer than 3 years (maybe the Benzites haven't been part of the program for that long), then it's reasonable to assume those non-Benzites will get promoted, and the Benzites won't. As she pointed out, discrimination occured due to inexperience, not how the Benzites have been perceived overall. A good example of this is in 'The Galileo Seven'. Despite how smart Spock was perceived to be by the crew, his rank, and how capable and logical he actually was, Spock had great difficulty commanding the humans in a life-or-death situation BECAUSE he was too inexperienced with commanding humans. His is second in command for a logical reason, not a discriminatory one. We also have to consider the possibility that maybe most Benzites who are capable of leadership will do so in their own fleets, not Earth's, thereby reducing the pool that Starfleet has even further, and making it LOOK like Starfleet won't put them in command, when it's just the Benzites they get aren't capable.
@HanakoSeishin
@HanakoSeishin 8 ай бұрын

If you're going to do this, you owe your viewers an honest discussion of how you determine objective truth. At what point do you personally decide weight of evidence establishes undeniable truth? A single data point? A hundred? A million? How is your determination of that point anything but subjective? Why should anyone else accept that point as their metric for objective truth versus opinion as well? How do you react to new data, or new interpretations of old data when it invalidates an established truth?

All we have are the facts at hand, otherwise it's speculation (particularly when it's untestable or unverifiable). As humans (or vulcans), we can never achieve 100% truth, only probabilities. We continuously revise our "truths" with the introduction of new data and hypothesis testing.

I mean it is either a parasitic lump of cells or it is a baby, it cannot be both. There is not my truth there is not your truth there is only the truth. I'm not positive about this but if you murder a pregnant woman aren't you charged for two murders? What if she was planning on abortion? Would it only be one murder then? Is it still a parasite after it's born? I don't know who teaches them to say things like this without actually thinking about it. Child is going to be dependent on its parents for at least a good 12 to 15 years, by their logic it's still eligible to be aborted since it's dependent. Is there a fallacy about misusing exceptions to the rule? I mean no turn around and tell you a story about a nine year old that has a job and pays taxes and is emancipated from their parents.
